View Full Version : 9/15 CFB on ESPNHD & ABC HD
I'm watching the Michigan State / Pitt game right now on ESPNHD. PQ looks good, it appeared they had some uplink problems during the first half, but that seems to be fixed now.
The graphic problems with ESPN continue, however. When they take out the score bar, a thin black line remains. This is also visible before the score bug is put in.
mtiffee 09-15-07, 02:45 PM Where on the screen?
It is located where the bottom edge of the score bar would be.
mtiffee 09-15-07, 02:59 PM Just checked... nothing like that coming from my BUG @ the ND / Mich. game. It's been reported, thanks.

Thanks for reporting it, and looking into for your game.

Are you guys having trouble with the HD feed? WXYZ Detroit is showing the game in SD.

Switched to HD on WXYZ Detroit at 3:52.

Thankfully. That SD was awful!

Isn't all SD awful?? ;)

Not if you ask some around here seem to be fooled by the SD widescreen that Fox puts out.
Isn't all SD awful?? ;)Yes, but as noted FOX ED (480i 16:9 upconverted to 720p) fools a lot of viewers.

It definitely fools me. I've only seen a few episodes of So You Think You Can Dance, but I was completely blown away when I found out that it wasn't HD. If all SD looked like that, I don't think HD would have ever taken off.
ABCTV99 09-15-07, 08:32 PM The USC/Nebraska game looks pretty good here in NYC via Comcast. Not so much on D*.

Noticing any stuttering of the picture, almost like they are showing it in fast forward during sections?
sd72667 09-15-07, 09:02 PM I am so sick of the sports ticker always running at the bottom of all games on ESPN and ABC. If I need to know a score, I'll look it up on the internet.
If you want to have a "drinking game," take a sip of your favorite beverage every time Brent Musberger says "John David Booty." Just a sip--or you'll need your stomach pumped!
Has any Notre Dame team stunk as horribly as this one?

Yea I would prefer just 18 & 28 updates like they do on MNF. But you know what CBS has that ticker too for their NFL games.
Nebraska defenders lack discipline on contain. They can adjust at halftime, if the coach will get their attention.

I don't know but I'm very glad Michigan won only because I have go back again next week...third week in a row. The atmosphere is much better when you're working in a town with a team doing well.
jamiecrane 09-16-07, 12:55 AM My biggest complaint watching on ABC was that the in game highlights of the ESPN and ESPN2 games were in SD with the ABC bars. Was this nation wide or just my local?
If it was nation wide, why?

Seriously, you are working my dream job. :D

If it was nation wide, why?It was probably nationwide. This thread might explain why (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=908475)

Yea the highlights and updates on ESPN/ESPN2 should've been HD (provided the game was originally broadcast in HD), but unlike Bristol which is an all digital, all HD plant, the ABC facility at West 66th Street in New York is very old, a rats nest of wires and not set up to handle a HD ingest operation for all those highlights. It actually is a bit sloppy on the air because the transitions from SD studio back to the game are very noticeable on ABC, unlike ESPN where everything is integrated HD and then downconverted as a whole product way downstream before going to the uplink.
From what i understand ESPN was originally supposed to handle all the college football studio segments from Bristol, but there are some long standing union snafus in New York with ABC - not to mention ESPN's Bristol facilities are so taxed that they barely have enough studio space and time just to put ESPN stuff on the air let alone take on ABC's. The ABC union thing basically insists that certain things on ABC have to be done by ABC/Directors Guild/NABET personnel until new contracts are written up. ESPN is a nonunion company. This may have changed recently but I think the negotiations are still pending.
I thought the PQ was awful for the USC-Nebraska game here tonight. (Here is Jackson, MI...Comcast). I guess the Detroit ABC affiliate. Blurry and just all around janky looking. I kept switching over to Ark-Bama on ESPN just because it looked so much better. And it turned out to be a much better game anyway.
The more I get into HD, the more discerning I become...and the more disillusioned I am with the quality of a lot of these.

Since I have a 37" LCD I always wanted a bigger TV. So I got a 52" LCD a few weeks back. Well I noticed right away the macro blocking was bigger blocks and more pronounced than my 37" model.
Well I decided that I didn't want to live with more macro blocking that was bigger blocks and much more noticable, so I returned and will wait for better days. I figured that my trusty 37" would get me by till I can get a better picture some day.
Seems that sports on network TV aren't so hot. Yes ESPN looks better but there are more sports going on than ESPN.
