Hi All,

Who will do a good job of up converting an SDTV signal? An up converting DVD player or Panny 50PX75U plasma TV(720P native display). If it is a DVD player, what do you guys recommend? I can only do a component output from my satellite SD receiver. Appreciate your comments.

There is no input on a DVD player for you to connect your sat box to.

Check out the Benq W500 projector which upconverts and does HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) as well. It upconverts via component and S-Video. What a difference it's made to my SD TV viewing. Also does beautiful upconverting of SD DVD. You can read about it in the under $300 projectors forum. Cost is under $1,000 US.

Thanks for the information gordon and rgs. I live in a small apt and wont be able to use a projector. So the only option to upconvert the SDTV signal is through my panny inbuilt upconverter? Does it even have one? What are my other options beyond upgrading to a HD receiver?

Thanks

Ikonos,

Because the sat signal is SD, not to mention overly compressed to begin with, it may never look all that great to you.

I would switch to their HD package if it were me. And use an Oppo for your DVD player if you do not want to upgrade to HD DVD or Blu Ray, preferably one with an HQV processor for your DVD collection.

Good luck.:)

Thanks gordon. I am planning on getting a OTA antenna for local HD. Any recommendations for both outdoor and indoor? In my location all the HD local channels i am interested are on UHF.

That's not exactly true. Panny has excellent upconverting capabilities and connecting sat. receiver to it will produce excellent picture if original signal is strong enough.
As somebody mentioned, there is no input inside of DVD player, so you have to connect sat. receiver to TV and upconverting DVD player (such as Oppo DV-980HD) to TV as well.
Your Panny has enough inputs to connect all equipment in your apartment :)
