Watching IND at TEN on WWJ via Comcast in Detroit. Looks and sounds good here.
atagert 09-16-07, 01:06 PM I'm watching the Steelers and Bills in Pittsburgh, but KDKA on Comcast isn't HD. Just awful SD 4:3. not sure whats up. Anybody have this game in HD?
Adam
OggideM 09-16-07, 01:06 PM PGH-BUFF not in HD in local PGH market.
wtf.
pathetic.
The update bar at the bottom of the screen isn't out to the far left edge like last week.

i called KDKA and they claimed (even though they weren't aware of the issue when they answered the phone *rolleyes*) that the network wasn't sending them an HD feed.
Ron_Mexico81 09-16-07, 01:08 PM Ind @ Ten looks really good here in Los Angeles TWC.
52' Sharp Aquos - SA8300 HD
lancer1991 09-16-07, 01:09 PM Forced to watch HOU at CAR in SD on comcast on WCSC. I hate when I have no option for a HD game.
Of course, I'd classify the picture quality as crappy.

eghill1125 09-16-07, 01:26 PM This sucks!!!!!
How can the NFL not be in HD??????
IND @ TEN looks & sounds great in Detroit, via Comcast and/or OTA.
OggideM 09-16-07, 01:29 PM from a new call
"they're working on it"
not sure whether that means KDKA or the network. the person answering the phone seemed pretty infuriated that I called again asking for an update.
so the network IS sending out HD then.... ?
guess KDKA lied to me
Just got off the phone with CBS Sports (212-975-4321) and they said they are transmitting the game in HD to KDKA so the problem must be there. They were unaware of the problem until just now so they are calling KDKA to get it resolved.

thanks, I couldnt track down a network phone # easily (maybe I'm just dumb)... and it was pretty hard to find the KDKA #.
Tiger_61 09-16-07, 01:33 PM I just called KDKA and they said "they are working on getting the feed from NY" ????? It stinks on standard definition :-((
GO STEELERS!!!
Tiger_61 09-16-07, 01:35 PM Looks like it will be ok now - thank Goodness :-))

There is no need to call a network to verify a game in HD. If anyone anywhere gets it in HD, it's available to all affiliates and the lack of HD is specifically a local problem.
The most efficient way to get a local station to 'flip the HD switch', is to call the station's 24 hour news line & ask for engineering. If you get voice mail or they refuse to connect you, tell them to pass the request along to the master control room, as others around the nation are watching in HD. Wait 10-15 minutes and repeat if necessary. In all cases be polite and precise with your request.
This approach is time tested and has worked countless times since HD was first available via OTA. Especially if 3-4 different people are making the calls.
eghill1125 09-16-07, 01:40 PM R we going to get HD before halftime ?

Check123 09-16-07, 01:42 PM Odd here in Charlotte...The F&F truck CBS is using here is an HD Truck. They are using the in house fiber for the cameras.
I spoke with a TV guy here...He said they are producing the game in HD and it is HD leaving here.

it doesn't work apparently when the affiliate claims they are on the HD 'switch' and are not being sent HD signal from the network.
so how else to find out whether they are correct or not?
that bottom score line on CBS seems to cut off the yard marker on the right side for me once in a while. funny, because the "1st & 10" text on the left side of the bottom score bar is as far to the left as possible without cutting any of the text off...
Is CBS just using too much real estate on the screen here? It seems like they wouldn't print stuff on the screen that would be at risk of disappearing due to overscan.
it doesn't work apparently when the affiliate claims they are on the HD 'switch' and are not being sent HD signal from the network
Trust me, if you do it properly ("You must have a problem, because others around the country are watching right now in HD....."), it works like a charm.
so how else to find out whether they are correct or not?I already told you. Read my post above.
Morganna 09-16-07, 01:44 PM When I spoke to CBS in NY they said KDKA is using the wrong transponder. So they are trying to get them to fix that.

that is exactly what i told them on my 2nd call 20 minutes ago.
still in SD. still told that it's a problem 'from the network'
Not sure how else to explain it:
If anyone, anywhere, gets a game in HD, it available to all network affiliates in HD. End of story.

In this case, the game was confirmed in HD in this topic at 1:04pm.
I understand that. Probably everyone here understands that. The people here was trying to get resolution to whether what the station phone answers to viewer complaints was accurate or not. When they say flipping the switch isn't the issue ....

apparently' flipping the switch' is NOT the problem in this case for people in the PGH market.

Politely call back and reiterate the facts. It can take time, on occasion, but be persistent.

'flipping the switch' is just a phrase to describe any number of issues a local station can have that would prevent HD from passing from the network.
In all cases, short of a hardware failure, it's a matter of the engineers correcting the problem.
I'm told it's working now, is that correct?

not here. just went to commercial and still in SD as of commercial break starting.

That does not surprise me. Considering the fact they will be doing 6 games in HD on some weeks. Since they use the same production trucks week to week. Producing the game in HD allows them to create melt tapes in HD so you will see footage of this game in HD in future weeks during highlight reels and feature pieces.
Over the last few years the limitation that CBS has had has been in master control not in HD field production.
gregleg 09-16-07, 01:58 PM I JUST called KDKA and they're still blaming the CBS feed (as of 1:50), so I called CBS (thanks to the poster who supplied that number), and he said "They're STILL having problems and STILL trying to pass it on to us? Please, the rest of the country is just fine. Thanks for letting me know, I'll lean on them to get their act together".
KDKA == clowns ::rolls eyes::

the bizarre thing was the pregame was fine until they flipped at about 1254 or so (EST) to the pittsburgh announce crew lead in segment
anyways, hopefully this is resolved at halftime.

lancer1991 09-16-07, 02:47 PM Gotta love that even though I don't have a HD broadcast game (Hou vs. Car), but I couldn't even get an HD halftime report. Just laziness on the part of WCSC to not switch it. I wish all stations had an auto switch.

That may not be your local station's fault. I believe the halftime show would be integrated into the broadcast by the same control room handling your game. Thus you see a downcoverted halftime show.

If you are getting an SD game... the station will remain SD for the full 3 hours (Halftime = SD; any potential late game switch = SD)

crooked 09-16-07, 03:15 PM Bills at Steelers here on WIVB over Time Warner Cable. Game has been in HD for the whole time here in Buffalo. Go Bills:/
has anyone noticed that the down and yardage are still cropped on the bottom bar for HD games? there is ample room for CBS to move this information more toward the cneter..
It looks better than last week. One display I have was cropping the left side last week but it's not this week, but it's at the very visible edge.

icemannyr 09-16-07, 04:07 PM Any plans for CBS to do SD Wide Screen for the games they can't do in HD?
WCBS-DT just came on at 4pm since there was no 1pm game here and CIN @ CLE SD 4:3 has alot of edge enhancement on the field cam.

bases1616 09-16-07, 05:28 PM Anyone have pixelation problems with the CBS HD games? I have NFL ticket and have been switching between the games and have noticed pixelation on and off. I have not seen any problems with the Fox games. Just trying to figure out if it is a CBS or D* bandwidth issue.

On D* Sunday Ticket I'm getting severe pixelation and macroblocking out of replay wipes. I don't see this on my FIOS feed of the same game (Jets @ Balt)
bases1616 09-16-07, 06:10 PM Sounds like D* is having bandwidth issues. Hopefully, next year all the games will be mpeg-4 and that should solve the bandwidth issue.

Just got switched at the end of NYJ @ BAL to the OAK at DEN OT.
Main field cam is a bit soft.
WWJ in Detroit is showing the DEN/OAK game right now in SD. Either the NFL changed some broadcast rules (I doubt it) or WWJ is making a mistake. Earlier WWJ stayed with the CIN/CLE game until 4:40 and then cut without notice to local programming. WWJ should not be showing any late game today because the Lions were at home on FOX in the late slot.

CBS had the doubleheader - so I thought that the 'home blackout' that Detroit went thru was only 'valid' until 7pm...
(and is there a feed of 60 minutes that is available to just Detroit? since the rest of the East and Central wont get it until football ends...)

Wow, this is really odd. the highlights of the game on NBC were also in HD; too bad CBS couldn't "Pass" the game to Sunday Ticket (or any channel for the matter, I assume? Cpanther, did Charlotte local CBS have it in HD? Anybody in Houston?) in HD.

I think that they don't have enough bandwidth to handle all the games properly, or their distribution system isn't properly calibrated (lack of latest-gen VBR statmuxer encoder systems?).
Unfortunately, I don't see any hope for improvement until they can get an additional 10 mbps+ of bandwidth (too expensive or impossible), go MPEG-4 for distribution (probably impossible for local affiiliates w/out expensive new equipment at each station), or dump their SD transmissions in 2009 (related to analog shutoff and lack of interest of the game outside of the US that would normally facilitate 4x3 center-cutting of broadcasts), opening up a lot of bandwidth. That year, the NFL will require all games to be in HD. Hopefully, games will look better by then.
Oh, that's right: There's the statmux system to think about, too. CBS should invest in (preferably) a Harmonic MV500-based or Harris NetVX-based (which they'll probably go for based on Harris's sponsorship of the NCAA b-ball tourney) MPEG-2 statmux system.
(Speaking of b-ball: You think demand for bandwidth with football is tough on encoders? Basketball makes football look like a cakewalk. Especially if Harris is sponsoring the games, it would make really good business sense to pony up for a NetVX system if CBS won't pay for it! Maybe the system will come with the next sponsorship deal?)
I think that they don't have enough bandwidth to handle all the games properly, or their distribution system isn't properly calibrated (lack of latest-gen VBR statmuxer encoder systems?).This is an incorrect assumption.
I've been told HD distribution being used for the additional HD games is the same as the last and previous years.
Further, general forum comments from the last two weeks say the games look as good as ever.
ENDContra 09-17-07, 02:00 AM Highlights of the Houston-Carolina game were in HD on WRAL tonight as well. CBS is apparently offering an HD feed of highlights at some point on Sunday, so they were able to get clean highlights (no bottom lines) of all the games, including FOX games. Im glad to see this being done...would love to see other sports or newssources making this available as well. Is ESPN using these though? I remember seeing some SD highlights of a couple of games last week.

Motion-related macroblocking was frequent and annoying. WHP-DT has two subchannels, so I suspect bad rate-shaping decisions may be to blame.
The down/yards-to-go/field position graphics were slightly cropped due to overscan on my set. I wish I had a service manual for this TV so that I could adjust overscan.

There is such a thread every single week with that weeks games.

I haven't been around for these past 2 Sundays, so perhaps someone could enlighten me on this.
Does CBS show that bottom line ticker with the yard line marker through the whole game? 15/30/45/00 increments? during the 4th quarter as games are winding down? when a team scores?

They show it during the entire game. I don't know about everyone else but personally, I really don't care about who has the ball and what down it is and where the ball is. They should stop crowding the screen with this info bar ( not to mention CBS' scoreboard and time info up on top, which they could make a little smaller). What they should do is give a quick update every 15 minutes or so on the other games.
