I just paid $300 ($70 more than Oppo 981) which I'm sure many/most here will prefer Oppo. I understand that. I chose the Denon for better build quality (particularly the semi-flimsy disc tray on Oppo) and better audio quality, although could be perceived only. My primary use is audio with some video included.
Any comments from experience either way would be appreciated.
TIA.
JetSnake 09-18-07, 09:47 PM Where did you buy it? I'm looking at the 1940ci as well. If anyone has some info, lets hear it.
pinkrudy 09-19-07, 02:16 AM i bought it also. if you find a region code hack let me know.
plays dvds/sacd/dvda better quality than my pionner 563a
however no PAL dvds and if you make a homemade dvd-a it wont play it due to copy protection.
my old pioneer plays pal and all homemade dvd-a

Where did you buy it? I'm looking at the 1940ci as well. If anyone has some info, lets hear it.
I bought mine from Bay Bloor Radio, in Toronto, Canada. It's arriving this week...so I'm also interested in other peoples experience with these units. How well does it upconvert? And yes...I'd be interested in a region free hack too :P
mjpprint 09-19-07, 10:10 PM Bought on Amazon thru Ace Photo for $306. I noticed the next day the price went up to $349 with same merchant.
Mine arrives on Thursday (tomorrow) so I'll have a report back by the weekend.
mjpprint 09-19-07, 10:12 PM if you make a homemade dvd-a it wont play it due to copy protection
Interesting...not sure I like that. Thanks for heads up. I'm gonna try one anyway.
pinkrudy 09-20-07, 12:41 AM mjpprint,
when i say homemade dvd-audio i mean the ones with all the info in the Audio_TS folder.
i only have 3. two are led zeppelin concerts and one is that darkside of the moon dvd-a.
all 3 wont play.
however i have many audio-dvds at 48khz/24bit that i burn as regular dvds. these play fine.
ALSO make sure you in audio options you set LPCM Select ON
if its off then it downsamples the audio. you can listen for your self.
Enjoy
mjpprint 09-20-07, 07:31 PM ALSO make sure you in audio options you set LPCM Select ON...if its off then it downsamples the audio. you can listen for your self.
Thanks. Is that for everything or just DVD-A? I'll be playing mostly Std CD, followed by SACD then DVD-A...as far as audio goes.
I just got mine set up yesterday. So far it looks/works great! I'm going to be testing it with more movies today. Upscaling works like a charm, but I haven't tried an SACD yet (I'll have to buy one). If you have any specific questions...let me know!
btiltman 09-24-07, 08:25 PM ALSO make sure you in audio options you set LPCM Select ON...if its off then it downsamples the audio. you can listen for your self.
On other Denons I have looked at, turning LPCM 'ON' causes the downsampling whilst leaving it 'OFF' allows full resolution.
pinkrudy 09-25-07, 06:45 PM this is just denons way of copy protection on high resultion dvds.
thats why its off when you buy it.
i checked online and found a thread where they came to this conclusion.
listen for yourself if you dont believe me.
Rudy
i dont know if lpcm applies to dvd-audio, sacd and cds. ididnt bother to check since i leave it on now all the time.
i am refering to high resolution dvds. 48khz and 24bit.
pinkrudy 10-04-07, 09:22 PM i just bought my 1st 48khz music(enhanced cd)dvd. its 2pac's makaveli dualdisc.
i noticed i had to turn LPCM Off to get good sound.
im drawing the conclusion that for store bought (enhanced 48khz) lpcm should be off.
but if its Homemade 48khz dvd then lpcm on.
denon shouldnt even have this option. it should always play everything full quality
this lpcm thing doesnt seem to affect regular cds
bertanic 11-07-07, 07:45 PM Anyone have any other feedback on the Denon 1940ci?
I'm ready to bite the bullet and am wondering whether you feel this is a good player within its price range.
I would have considered the OPPO 981, but I have heard it does not play very well with DLP sets (macroblocking) and I have the Samsung LED DLP HLT6187.
Thanks all!
RogueTrader 01-02-08, 08:59 AM Hi folks. I'm having a problem getting my 1940CI to play SACD (Peter Gabriel Shaking the Tree) - the player will only recognize 2 channels & will not allow me to choose multichannel by pressing the SACD Setup button on the remote. Here is my Audio config:
DRC - ON
LPCM - OFF
Dolby Digital - BITSTREAM
DTS - BITSTREAM
Bass Enhancer - ON
HDMI Audio - 2 ch
Analog Audio - Multi
The player is hooked up to Yamaha RXV 757 receiver.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm hoping there's a known issue with the Gabriel SACD .... haha
Cheers
konoyaro 01-02-08, 09:25 PM Hi folks. I'm having a problem getting my 1940CI to play SACD (Peter Gabriel Shaking the Tree) - the player will only recognize 2 channels & will not allow me to choose multichannel by pressing the SACD Setup button on the remote.
There's nothing wrong with your disk or your setup - the only Peter Gabriel SACD with a multi-channel SACD layer is "Up".
RogueTrader 01-03-08, 08:38 AM Holy smokes konoyaro, gotta admit my first reaction to your post was "@#!! guy, I think I know if I bought a SACD or not!!" Well ..... despite the SACD logo on the packaging, the disc isn't 5.1, it's just a better-quality 2ch recording. I went to Amazon to prove that I had a 5.1 SACD, but proved konoyaro's point instead.
So, more than slightly embarrassed, I'm going to shut up now and be more careful with what I buy. Cheers konoyaro!
(if we could all pretend I didn't ask my question I'd really appreciate it!!)
