I thought I start my own thread since the Samsung 54 and 64 Series Plasma Thread is all about judder/firmware issues and no one answers questions about other issues.
I recently got a Samsung 50" Plasma HPT5064 and I'm having a bit of hard time setting it up, so I would like some help from you guys.
Here are the items I have.
Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV (HPT5064)
Samsung 5-Disc Home Theatre Surround Sound System HT-TX75 (came as a package deal)
Satellite FTA receiver.
Connected the DVD 5-Disc Home Theatre to TV trough HDMI cable
Connected the Satellite box to TV trough Component Cables and 2 Audio cables
From TV to Receiver Optical Audio for when I want to listen trough Home Theatre.
Questions:
1) With HDMI and Component when in Menu > Picture Size > the Wide Fit and Just Scan options are shaded and can’t figure how some of you enable it.
2) Other question is how do you change the Resolution i.e. 720p,1080i? Even though I have it hooked up trough HDMI and Component that option is nowhere to be found.
All I get pressing the Info button is 720 X 480i when watching Satellite and 720 X 480 watching DVD
Thank you.

1) With HDMI and Component when in Menu > Picture Size > the Wide Fit and Just Scan options are shaded and can’t figure how some of you enable it.

It's in the manual, page 28

• In TV, VIDEO, S-VIDEO, and COMPONENT(480i, 480p) modes, all screen
modes can be selected. (16:9 ➞ Zoom1 ➞ Zoom2 ➞ 4:3)
• In COMPONENT(720p, 1080i) or HDMI(720p, 1080i) mode, 16:9, 4:3 and
Wide Fit can be selected.
• In Zoom1, Zoom2 and Wide Fit modes, you can move the picture on the
screen by pressing the ▲ or ▼ button.
• You can not change the picture size when PIP is set to Double.
• When Double ( , ) mode has been set in PIP, the Picture Size cannot
• Wide Fit can be used when watching a Digital HD (High Definition) signal.
Wide Fit sets the optimum picture format by expanding it both horizontally and
vertically. For example, you can reset the picture in 4:3 format to 16:9. Wide Fit
does not support all external devices (DVD, VCR etc.).

2) Other question is how do you change the Resolution i.e. 720p,1080i? Even though I have it hooked up trough HDMI and Component that option is nowhere to be found.

You can't change the resolution. The info button tells you what resolution the signal is.

It case that is not clear, the Just Scan and Wide Mode options only work when the set is being fed a 720p or 1080i signal.

Thank you so much tomanystraydogs for taking the time to explain this.

So watching a DVD in my upconverting 1080i player trough HDMI won't get me 720P or 1080i?

What do I need in order to be able to get 720p or 1080i.
Thank you again.

The signal resolution is changed in the box, not the TV. Check out the manual for the box or, if needed, call your cable/satellite provider for assistance. I think many boxes have the resolution options defined during initial setup and you may need to run that routine again.

Have you checked the setup on your Satellite and DVD boxes? They could be only displaying 480i and 480p output. With DirecTV you need to make sure that you have all formats enabled. This is probably the same for you DVD player and Satellite provider.

That's the problem, has nothing to do with the set, has to do with what the source is sending.

Like others said, check the source (dvr, cable box, etc.) and change the resolution there.
