I am ready to make a purchase, I just can't make up my mind. If you can share any experience with me on these subs it would be greatly appreciated. I am purchasing the Anthony Gallo Reference AV's for my main speakers, and the A'Diva's for my rear speakers. I need a fast accurate sub for music, but also want one with power and authority as well. The room that this setup is going in is a 24'x24' greatroom, with a cathedral ceiling that peaks at 13 feet. I hear that the ML Depth is fast and accurate, but may not give me that wow hometheater experience, while the Velodyne may perform better for hometheater, but not necessarily for music. I will be using this system for gaming and music listening, as much as for movies. Is there another direction I should be going in? want to keep the price below $2000. I looked at SVS, but their subwoofer cabinets are just too large for my room(I have enough furniture already). Thanks for your time!

I own a SPL 1200R, and can tell you the Velodyne SPL series is exceptional for music. The full DSP control includes a servo feedback loop similar to the Digital Drive series for very low distortion and very high acuracy. It also includes a automatic 6 band equalizer with mic that will help tame peaks and dips at the listening position. The four presets allow you to run it flat or accent certain frequencies depending on the material or taste, I just run it flat. I can tell you it provides definition to bass, all the nuances of a plucked acoustic bass, a kick drum doesn't just sound like a just a thud, explosions don't just sound like a boom. The raw output is pretty good too, enough to pressurize my room and rattle doors and windows without breaking a sweat. I don't have experience with the ML so can't provide a comparison, but my experience with the SPL shows it to be very versitlile and it excells at any program material. The only downside I can see is it might not have quite the raw output of other similar priced units mainly because of the small enclosure. I was restricted to a small enclosure by WAF, so this was the best option for me.

The ML Descent (Depth's big brother) was one of the most impressive sounding subs I've ever heard. I've got a giant SVS Plus/2 (updated drivers), and it's a tad better for HT (which is the reason for the purchase), but the ML was head over heels better for music. The price is a bit high, but for pure musicality, it's tough to beat. I also had the opportunity to demo quite a few Velo's and Paradigm subs, as well as HSU's in Canada, and none impressed as much as ML did for music, and SVS for HT.

Thanks for the info guys! What do you think of my room size at 24'x24'? Do you think either the Depth or the Velodyne are powerful enough for a room this size/ I also have a 9' opening into a kitchen as well.

That is a very personal choice. My room is about 15x20, a 10ft ceiling peak, the back almost fully open to the kitchen and dining room. The SPL1200R is enough for me. I believe the SPL1500 would do fine in a room your size, but again, this is very personal. Some people are happy only when there is enough bass so the neighbor thinks there is a major earthquake. I recommend purchacing from a reputable dealer that will let you take it back if not 100% satisfied. I first took home the 1000R and it was just not enough for me, even after over a week, they took it back in exchange for the 1200. Also note, Velodyne will only support a warrenty if you buy from an authorized dealer, and a 3year amp, 5year driver is nothing to shake a stick at!

Your room is over 5000 sq. ft. I would imagine one would need the Descent to fill that size of a room. My room is just under 4000 cu. ft. and the Plus/2 is about what it needs with all the bleeding headed out into the foyer, hallway, and basement door.

Do I really need to fill the room , or just the 10x12 listening area in front of the audio/video system? I don't care if it sounds amazing while I am sitting at my home office in the back of the room. I am not looking to fully pressure my room at this point, it just seems like I would have to spend 4-5 thousand on a sub that would do this for my room...I just want the second best solution for my room...Great tight bass for music, and something to give hometheater some great impact. It doesn't have to shake the whole room, i actual find that annoying...Who wants to re-adjust all the china in the cabinet everytime you watch a movie...;)
