I have an opportunity to pick up either the Samsung 5084(1080P) or the NEC 50XR6A(720P) but am having trouble choosing. I have read favorable reviews on both. The Samsung 1080P is a plus, but NEC has their supposedly great image processing and better glass? The NEC will be about $300 more. Which will give me the best picture and value for general viewing via Time Warner HD cable??
Thanks for any input
John

Take the Samsung. The 5084 has excellent PQ and a 1080P with a 50" set makes more sense given the choice of the two.

I love my 5084. I can't speak to the NEC. I think if the Samsung is cheaper AND has 1080p, then I would lean that way. It's a nice set and you will find that there have been very few problems reported in the 5084 thread.
The most frequent is a slight lean on sets where the stand was pre-installed and I believe two or 3 have reported a dead set after a day or 2.
The Samsung has very good blacks (not as good as Pioneer, but on par with just about everything else out there) It has 3 HDMI ports as well as a "bevy" of other options.

Nec makes a great panel, tough choice for sure. Samsung is the full 1080P, but it is hard to compete with NEC SD picture quality.

Chris, I really think the SD on the Samsungs are unappreciated. Mine and I'm sure others do as a good a job as I've seen, if not better than some.
Not trying to be a Samsung kool-aid drinker here. Just stating what I've seen. My biggest critique of Samsung is really the poor quality sound out of those speakers.

Thanks for the input so far. I will be making a decision today, and hopefully hanging it on the wall tomorrow. The poor sound issue will not affect me as I will be installing some in-wall speakers. Still a tough choice though. I am sure I will be happy either way, its just making the decision that is hard.
Thanks again
John
