View Full Version : COSTCO BD only?
Demayor 09-19-07, 06:31 PM I was by my local Costco today (Las Vegas) and as usual I checked the media area. I was surprised to see that they have now a larger and better selection of BD (about 10 to 12 different titles); although they have upped their prices (most of them cost $26.00).
However I was more surprised not to see any HD-DVDs in the area. I went around the entire place and could not find a single HD-DVD. Has Costco gone BD exclusive or were they just out of stock? (no I didn't as any employees as I figured they wouldn’t know about that).
cawgijoe 09-19-07, 06:45 PM No. It's just that store. The Chantilly, VA Costco has both formats. The ones for $26.99 are Fox titles.....Kingdom of Heaven...The Devil Wears Prada.......X-Men.....and more. They also have the Disney box sets. They also have the Warner Bros. $18.99 Blu-Rays which include Superman 2, Blood Diamond, etc.
I also saw today that they have displayed the Warner Bros 4 pacts in HD-DVD. Soon to be followed by the Blu-Ray versions.
SamIam2 09-19-07, 06:48 PM Could be a distribution/availability thing ... In Hawaii, the main Costco has both players ... but had run out of media (no HD or BD) ... it seems that if you see something you want at Costco, buy it then ... you may not see it for a while if it runs out.

Same here.
Had both hddvd and BLURAY diskc. Had individual Blu titles and the 4 packs. All the single titles were $18 and change. Lots of Sony BluRay players too. Can tell how sales are going.
maynerd 09-19-07, 07:35 PM I purchased the Ultimate Matrix set on HD-DVD just over the weekend at costco. They aren't BR exclusive that's for sure.
cawgijoe 09-19-07, 09:22 PM What's interesting at the Chantilly, VA Costco is that where thery display the HD-DVD player and Sony Blu-Ray player, they are demoing a Blu-Ray disc in a loop on a Sony 40" LCD HDTV. The disc of course is pushing Blu-Ray. They have sold at least 4 to 6 players in the last week or so and no HD-DVD players. They actuallt received more HD-DVD players and they are just sitting there in three stacks. Interesting.
Poolrad 09-19-07, 10:33 PM Mine in Greenville, SC has a pretty good selection of HD-DVD's $18 each but they only sell BD's in bundles of 4..
Demayor 09-20-07, 01:37 AM I suppose is different in every Costco. At my local one I had seen HD-DVD before (about a month ago) and that's why it strucked me interesting that there were none today. Also as someone said above, as soon as you walk in there is a display promoting Sony TV and Blu-ray player.
Anyways I guess this thread can be closed now. The question has been answered. Thanks all.
Moorebid 09-20-07, 04:25 PM I visit 5 different Costco's in my metro area from time to time - two of them frequently - and have never seen any HD-DVD media in any of them. A co-worker said he saw a scant few at the largest of the stores earlier this year (I never saw them at any other locations in that timeframe), but hasn't seen any since - and never saw the Ultimate Matrix collection (how much did they charge for that, BTW?).
Meanwhile, we've received every available Blu-Ray at all of the stores nearly as soon as they were announced. It strikes me as odd, considering they've been selling an HD-DVD player (HD-D2, I think their equivilent of an HD-A20 at one point as well) several months longer than a Blu-Ray player (S301) - if you don't count the PS3, though supply shortages still kept that out for a couple months.
They also have Mexican Coke in a couple locations… mmmm, cane sugar.

I believe it was 74.99
I have also purchased 2 cases of Mexican coke. GOOD STUFF! :)
Last time I went to Costco (Queens, NY) they only had HD-DVD. No Blu-ray.

My Costco is very similar. It carries both players, but the sony is outselling the HD DVD by quite a margin (per many trips to the store and confirmation with employee).
There are about 8 HD DVD disc titles and 12-14 Blu-ray titles available, plus the DIsney boxed sets.
In short, mine carries both but Blu-ray is selling more.
pacpisces 09-21-07, 04:07 AM It took awhile for my costco to have any HDMedia, but last week saw they did stock both formats. For $18.99 ea too, just not a great selection and probably won't be going there on new release Tuesdays!
whippersnapper 09-21-07, 06:56 AM My nearest Costco (Arundel Mills, Maryland) is now all Blu-ray. Only the BDP-S300 & 80GB PS3 as players. And a relatively small selection of BDs. Good prices, particularly on the various "best of Blu-ray" 4 packs.

just give it time... the hd-dvd players probably sold out already...at least, that's what happened to the costco at newington, va. the s300 is still here but they now have a small selection of hd movies for both format...too bad i have them all already.

I seriously doubt that's the case. Costco floor space is the most valuable piece of real estate in consumer merchandising. If they are only selling 4-6 players per week or none at all, they would be long gone out of there.
mrigsby 09-21-07, 10:36 AM The above poster is right, I know one of the floor managers at Costco and if something isn't selling they are shipped out ASAP. He also said thaty they do everything they can to make sure everything stays stocked so if you see a stack of HD DVD players it's because they've replaced the ones they've sold.
If a stock goes down, it means that they weren't able to get any more of that specific product.
Robert Spalding 09-21-07, 05:08 PM mine only stocks Bluray
Moorebid 09-25-07, 06:15 PM Thought I'd just post an update to my previous post… I visited the largest Costco in the area last Friday, and was surprised to find 3 volumes of Warner HD-DVD 4-packs (also in Blu-Ray) as well as a handful of individual titles (March of the Penguins and Casablanca immediately come to mind; there were a couple others, but no Ultimate Matrix Collection :(). However, there were only two boxes of HD-DVD's - all from Warner - compared to 8 boxes of Blu-Ray from the likes of Disney, Fox and Warner. They would appear to be ramping up, but HD-DVD seems to be lagging behind… I would think Universal would want to get in on this game as well (they've definitely got the back-catalog); I'm surprised Sony hasn't.

Wrong.....I'm in the Chantilly Costco three time per week....we are always running out of milk:)........the Blu-Ray players are as of today in two stacks while the HD-DVD players are in four. A couple of days ago the Sony's were down to one stack.
Unless the HD-DVD players are flying out of there and being replenished as quickly as they go...........they haven't sold.

If that's the case, then they should be shipping all those HD-DVD players back to Toshiba soon because they've barely moved.

Then they should be shipping those Toshibas back soon because they are either flying out the door and being just as quickly replenished or they are not selling and just sitting.
I know the guy who runs the floor of that department. I'll be in there again Thursday or Friday and will ask him.
Roger Mathus 09-26-07, 06:24 PM At the local COSCO they have both Blu-Ray and HD DVD titles but they have a special display for Blu-Ray and only a very few HD DVD on the table.
They have both Blu Ray Sony S301 and the HD Toshiba A20 players in stacks. Demos are set up for both players but they are not equal. The Sony is hooked up to large 1080p (I think 40 inch) Samsung and the Toshiba is hooked up to off brand less than 20 inch LCD. The Sony demo blows away the Toshiba demo.
Local Wal Mart Super Center has a good selection of Blu-Ray titles, including the new releases from last week, but only a few older HD DVD titles mixed in with the Blu-Ray. I did not see any Blue-Ray or HD DVD players.
