View Full Version : A chance of Spielberg releasing Jurassic Park in Japan.
eightninesuited 09-20-07, 12:13 AM For those who don't know, Sony owns the distribution rights to Jurassic Park in Japan. If Spielberg truly wants to release some of his movies, surely someone from Sony definately knows that they own the DVD rights to it in Japan.
raptor3076 09-20-07, 01:01 AM Not sure if Sony owns it or not, IMDB lists this for Japan:
United International Pictures (UIP) (1993) (Japan) (theatrical)
Sony Pictures Entertainment (2000) (Japan) (DVD)
Universal Pictures (2005) (Japan) (DVD) (re-release)
UIP is co-owned by Universal and Paramount.

Dave Mack 09-20-07, 02:38 AM Of all 3 films. I have them and they look great!
Superbit is a columbia (Sony) thing, yes...?
Well, I know Paramount is f**king it all up for themselves
Viacom Kisses Off Spielberg
In what appeared to some analysts to be a remarkably cavalier comment from the head of the company that had paid $1.6 billion for the DreamWorks film company in 2005, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said Tuesday that if Steven Spielberg decides to leave DreamWorks when his contract expires next year, "the financial impact to Paramount first and especially to Viacom overall would be completely immaterial." Dauman's dismissive comments came as rumors spread that Spielberg, a DreamWorks cofounder, was becoming increasingly unhappy over his relationship with Paramount chief Brad Grey since the acquisition. Nevertheless, most of Paramount's successful releases since the acquisition have been DreamWorks' productions, and it was assumed within the industry that Viacom would do whatever was necessary to allay Spielberg's concerns. On the contrary, Dauman told a Goldman Sachs conference in New York Tuesday, Paramount was already planning for Spielberg's departure. Reporting on Dauman's remarks, Daily Variety commented that they were especially "notable" given the fact that publicly Dauman "usually

First they kick out Cruise, then they ditch blu-ray and now they're losing Spielberg. Now although Spielberg is a bit overrated as a Director, he was the one making money for them just like Cruise. I guess Paramount is actually trying to destroy themselves
Dave Mack 09-20-07, 06:46 AM again with the Spielberg overrated as a director...
Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, Empire of the sun, the color purple, Schindler's list, Saving Private Ryan..... (could keep going...)

I wasn't saying he's a bad director ;)
Ferdopa 09-20-07, 07:12 AM Sony has the Universal movie distribution in 2003.
Thatīs the reason for the Superbit editions of JP, Gladiator, etc.

No just that he was overrated eventhough he is the most succesfull director of all times :-)
dildatonr 09-20-07, 07:19 AM how did we arrive at losing tom cruise a bad thing?
not that I work for Xenu or anything.

That doesn't mean he can't be overrated :) It's not like he's the god of Hollywood though people tend to make it look that way. He's an excellent director and directed quite a few good movies, but we shouldn't make more of it as it is.

like it or not but Cruise was actually earning them money, just like Spielberg
dildatonr 09-20-07, 07:28 AM yeah but they left him when he was running around telling reporters that prescription medication was evil when he was supposed to be promoting Mission Impossible 3- amongst other things. Even spielberg distanced himself from cruise when promoting War of the Worlds. He's much less of cash draw now that the public has seen this side of him. The dude is a nut job acting as a PR/recruiting agent for a dangerous cult. Hardly something you need to point to and say "HEY THAT REMINDS ME OF PARAMOUNT DROPPING BLURAY".
AaronSCH 09-20-07, 07:33 AM If anything, Cruise and Spielberg are underrated in their individual accomplishments.

Oh come on. That's like saying Pink Floyd is underrated.

Well, his scientology beliefs notwithstanding, as someone who went to my new doctor because of "stress" when I moved to California and after a 15 minute exam was prescribed celexa which is actually an SSRI anti-depressant and a pretty heavy duty one, I thought alot of what he said about the overprescribing of anti-depressants to be right on the money. After 5 months of basically turning into an emotionless zombie, I then had the thrill of (after missing my daily dose by just 1/2 a day), turning into Mr. Hyde, having about the worst case of rage in history and scaring the bejesus out of my better half. I did some research. SSRI's PERMANENTLY alter your brain chemistry. I found dozens of websites and support groups for people trying to get off their SSRI's. Many try and after feeling MUCH worse than they did before they started any drug, start up again, often at a higher dosage because their body adapts to it.
Many lives virtually ruined. People institutionalized. People stuck on these for life at progressively higher and higher doses. And many took these "drugs" in good faith from their doctor because they were feeling blue, sad or anxious.
I then went through the hell of celexa withdrawal which can be similar to heroin withdrawal with brainzaps, mood swings, racing heart... They actually WARN you not to just discontinue use without medical supervision.
What he said about just doping up kids with ritalin was right on the money IMHO.
I'm not saying all meds are bad, or all doctors, but there is DEFINITELY a HUGE abuse going on.
What's making you anxious, sad? Who cares? Pop a pill and turn into a zombie, who cares what it does to your brain down the line.
angrypolarbear 09-20-07, 07:58 AM Spielberg has the release rights to the films he did with Paramount too. Given this, I'd say there is no chance of seeing any of them on HD-DVD.
Dave Mack 09-20-07, 08:02 AM boy did I go off topic!
(sorry, it's late!)

I don't mind Dave.
Still a good post.
Dave Mack 09-20-07, 08:33 AM Thanks. Hope I didn't sound TOO soap-boxy.
;)
Spielberg probably is overrated from Paramount's standpoint. What they care about is what he can do for them going forward, not what he did in the past. And the question is, can Spielberg make money for them in the future? I'm sure he can, but at what cost? At one time he made HUGE Blockbusters like E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park. But recently he's had a lot of ho-hum films like Munich, the Terminal, and A.I. (not saying anything about the quality, just the box office). Even his successes like Minority Report and War of the Worlds aren't jaw dropping.
I'm sure he can continue to make successful movies, and probably very good movies from a quality standpoint, but if he's not raking in the big bucks is it worth it to pay him all the money that have to pay him and deal with all his complaints and demands? There's a cost-benefit analysis to be done here, and I'm not sure the benefits are worth the cost. And to some extent is a control thing. Paramount is the boss, and they should be dictating what's what. Not Spielberg. So this strikes me as Paramount saying we'll have him, but we won't kowtow to all his crap and if need be, we'll move on and make as much money with a Michael Bay or a Jon Favreau instead.
Thanks. Hope I didn't sound TOO soap-boxy.

I'm quite interested actually. I was on the same pill. It ultimately did what I needed it to do but it messed with my head too much so I'm glad to be off it. It's pretty scary in hindsight.
SSRI's PERMANENTLY alter your brain chemistry.
Sh**. I wish I knew that two or three years ago. That could explain a couple of things.
ANYWAY... regarding Jurassic Park... I'm not holding my breath but it could happen. After all, Sony Pictures is the only studio to have any luck with Spielberg on the HD formats so far.
Brad1963 09-20-07, 11:47 AM Universal distributed a bunch of titles through Sony on DVD at one time.
