View Full Version : Xbox360 Premium to Elite Upgrade Question
fivehead1 09-20-07, 08:40 AM Hi.
I just bought an Elite because I am changing everything over to HDMI connections(my receiver is causing purple bars via component video). I tried faxing Microsoft for the data migration kit, but it was busy every time. I then tried calling their customer support, but each Middle Eastern guy I talked to could not understand what I was saying.
My question is: Should I just hook up the new Xbox and sign in with my account? What would I be losing? I have arcade games that I downloaded for the kids - would they disappear, or would they re-download when I access my account.
Thanks a lot for any help.
ArthurL 09-20-07, 08:48 AM Remove the Elite's hard drive and use the Premium's hard drive until you receive the Migration Kit from MS. The kit's software will erase all of the contents of the target drive.
Although the kit was free, I had to pay shipping charges.
TRALFAZ 09-20-07, 09:22 AM I mailed my Elite migration form and recieved the kit in a couple weeks, no shipping charges at all. From what I understand, once you transfer your Arcade games, you can only play them when you're hooked up to Xbox LIVE. At least that's what I've read, I could be wrong.
fivehead1 09-20-07, 09:32 AM Thanks guys. I would delete the duplicate thread, but I don't see the delete option anywhere.
bryansj 09-20-07, 10:10 AM You will loose your game saves. Anything else can be redownloaded that is linked to your LIVE account. You could just get or borrow a memory card to back up your saves and you wouldn't need the transfer kit.

Are you sure, I can just redownload any online live games purchased?
Thought that was the reason people were getting the kit?
BillKen 09-21-07, 08:27 PM I bought a 512mb card for my game saves - faxed in my Data Cable request - got impatient - and re-downloaded everything onto my new Elite - worked fine. The only caveat is that once you re-download on the new box you need to be signed into Live in order to play the "full" version of any games you purchased via Live (same applies to using the data cable to xfer as I recall). I then just copied my game saves from the 512mb to the Elite and I was good to go.
Unless you have a horrible internet connection and don't want to wait for downloads - I'm still kind of confused as to what advantage the migration kit offers - other than not having to use a memory card for the game save transfers.
some saved games can't be transfered onto the memory card I ran into that when i switched and lost my Forza 2 Level 49 saved game with 30 mil in the bank
ogbuehi 09-22-07, 08:29 AM I lost all my Halo 2 saves and custom games I created because you can't transfer any Halo 2 saves.
lovebuzz#836 09-22-07, 01:37 PM Xport 360 -----> you can transfer anything.
rounder23 09-23-07, 01:47 AM If I buy an elite, can I just recover my gamertag on the Elite and delete it from my premium? I don't care about saved games or arcade games I have downloaded, just my gamertag. Thanks

faithful227 09-27-07, 11:14 PM i've got a few questions. i am planning on purchasing a Halo 3 edition tomorrow. i currently have the premium. i have only two game saves i am interested in transferring. can i do this with just a 512 memory unit? is it fairly easy?
also, does the audio pass through the HDMI? my receiver is capable, and ive read about using the optical out from the component cables but i would like to run just the HDMI. sorry if these answers have been posted...
thanks for the help!

That's what I did. Works perfectly. Just use your premium hard drive on your Elite until you get the migration kit. This is exactly what MS recommends on the support website. SJ

Yes it should be easy to transfer your game saves with a memory unit unless it is one of the games saves that won't transfer...such as Viva pinta. Most game saves work though.
Yes just plug your HDMI cable into your receiver and you are good to go.

thanks for the response. the games are Forza 2 and Gears of War. Even if Gears won't save i guess it's not that big a deal. i can always play that again :) I'm also just about done with Halo 3, but again, don't mind starting over with that either.
thanks again!
