Please help me guys to decide on Velodyne Vx-10 or Dayton (budget $200). It is for a small room, so I don't want any heavy bass. Vx-10 has 5 yrs warranty but Dayton has only 1 yr, I don't know, do I need to consider that ? This sub has to go with Infinity Primus 150 bookshelf. Any suggestions ? or any other sub ?

Also look at the X sub. It's received some good reviews. Stay clear of the Dayton.

Owned both. The Dayton is much better.

That's funny, I also don't see the Dayton, which is so much better, on Craigsubs list. :D And if you are going to compare it to the Velo, you need to know how to set the Velo up properly. The Dayton is also less linear and probably produces more distortion, this can often give the illusion of it sounding louder or more dynamic.

Wow, you certainly peed all over Doc99's opinion! Well done!

Just because it is not on the list does not mean it isn't so. I have no idea but neither do you Mailiang. Linsonzach, be careful of the marketing on this forum.

What selections? Refresh my memory.:D As far as the peein is concerned I'm not trying to twist anybodies arm. The budget Velos have received very good customer reviews and the VX10 offers lower distortion and a flatter response then many subs in that price range. The same could be said of the X sub. Many listeners may prefer the sound of the Dayton over these type budget subs, especially for HT use since they provide more coloration, especially in the higher bass octaves where many movie sound effects take place. I can't tell you how many people have said, even on this forum, "where did all the bass go?" after upgrading to a higher end sub. But with their new HSU, SVS, etc... they are amazed when they hear that occasional deep clean bass. As far as the distortion is concerned, for some people that can be a plus, since many of us can not distinguish the difference between the primary signal and the secondary harmonic. This often makes the sub sound more robust, which is fine in terms of ones personal taste. (For more info on this subject see Tom Nousaines comments in S&V's article Tiny Killer Subs 6/06.)

Just because it is not on the list does not mean it isn't so. I have no idea but neither do you Mailiang. Linsonzach, be careful of the marketing on this forum.

Marketing? I was joking {:D} How much time have you spent on this forum? Read some of my posts before making such a silly statement. ;)

Please, don't equate the number of posts with someone's knowledge. I don't claim to be an authority, but every time someone asks anything about subs you would think that HSU and SVS are the only companies that make decent products. This is a cult, not a forum. I just warned the OP that there are other options and marketing does in fact take place on this forum.

Mailiang, I was really kidding... You've been helpin my on the best compact sub thread... Heck, right now a 10 year old model cerwin vega 8 inch sub would sound a HECK of alot better than a non working 6.5" yamaha... lol 6.5"!!! I mean, C'mon! I know its a HTIB system, but 6.5"!!! I should read labels before purchasing!! And that's why I am here!! :D

I'm not equating anything. If you read my posts you would find that I don't favor any particular brands. I try to make recommendations based on the posters needs. SVS and HSU aren't the rule of thumb on this forum. There is plenty of talk about manufactures like Velodyne, ED, Mirage, Bic and many other brands. If you spent more time on this forum, maybe you would realize that. If you want to make a contribution, please remember to ponder before you preach. ;)

I have a bargin subwoofer for your consideration for well under $200. The Celestion S10 for $150.

It cost me $172 delivered from Florida to Kentucky.

The S10 is the companion sub for thoses cool looking plexiglass floor standing speakers made by Celestion.

It has a bottom firing 8" woofer pushed by a rear mounted 200 watt amp. It is a bass reflex design with a oval port also mounted on the bottom. The port is approx. 2" tall x 6" wide and around 7" deep.

It's a nicely made sub, suitable for a bedroom or small living room where pant flapping bass is not needed. Before I move it in my daughters bedroom I have listening to it in my HT system. It does a nice job for a modest 8" woofer.

The room it is in now is 14' x 22' with 8' ceilings and in a smaller room it should sound and "feel" even better.

P.S. the Hsu STF-1 is going for $254 + shipping....awesome bargin.

Iolmaster, I know what you're saying.

I LOVE it when someone makes a thread that says, "I'm going to buy these speakers, I only have $100 to spend, what do you think?"

The responses generally consist of, "Nope. Spend more money. Those are horrible. What? They're well reviewed elsewhere? Oh...uh...no, those are horrible, you need to spend at least another hundred bucks to get something we here would consider BARELY decent. I'd never own those."

Sound ain't the same for everyone. Look at Macy Gray. One could find her screeching, raspy, awful singing voice a bit undesirable. Some may...like..her.

Everything's subjective. EVERYTHING. What's trash to you may be treasure to another. I wish more people here could realize that a bit more.

Then again, elitism in any form always entertains the hell out of me, so...

I agree somewhat to what your saying. Many members have the upgrade bug and they expect others to think the same. However if you only have $100.00 to spend on a sub, the choices available may disappoint you. Sometimes it's just better to save your money until you have enough to meet your particular needs. Don forget this is a subwoofer forum and that alone raises the price verses value bar when it comes to the kind of recommendations you are going to see.

I just kinda threw that amount in there.

I, of course, started with a $100 sub in mind, which has now escalated to $274. DAMN this place!

What are you looking for? Also what is you room size? The X sub is a very good sub for smaller rooms. The questions is, will it meet your needs?

I just received a Dayton Sub-120 ($135) as a gift and for the price its an amazing deal. IMO much better than the <$250 subs that I've heard at BB or CC. Nowhere near the same league as the HSU VTF 3.3 sitting in the theater, but for what it is, its a bargain.

Not a really 'musical' sub and is definitely a bit 'boomy', but if you're looking for a cheap sub for a budget (or secondary) home theater its a great deal! I had mine paired with some Axiom M22s and an Onkyo 304 and it sounded pretty good to my ears - Amazing, if you consider than entire setup cost <$450.

The only problem was that the item arrived damaged and had to deal with Parts Express to get it exchanged. Their CS was incredibly polite and helpful... but today I found out that the replacement sub was shipped to the billing address rather than MY address (it was a gift). I wasn't about to drive 3 hours (round trip) and I don't expect my girlfriend's mother to lug around a 40+lb box so I canceled the order. Looks like I will be upgrading to a BIC H-100 or a eD 250/300. Ahh decisions, decisions.

I think you will be happier with either ED. They're well worth the extra money.

Mailang, I'm getting the HSU STF-1. It's for a small living room, under 400sq ft. Will be used pretty much solely for movies. I don't want anything that'll destroy the sliding glass doors or my lease agreement, but I want sharp, accurate bass and it seems the STF-1 is the best bet for me.

Your room measurements should be taken in cubic feet. In Tom Nousaine's 7500^3 room the STF1 produced a reasonable 75db at 20hz. At 32hz a very respectable 104db. Average spl from 25 to 50 hz was 101 db. Thats pretty remarkable for a sub that size with only an 8" driver. Enjoy!

Just sent the Dayton back and am seriously thinking about ordering an A2 300, granted its almost 3x the price, but the girlfriend said she would buy it as a birthday gift!

Would you consider the ED to be a musical sub? I heard the X-sub is, but it's going into a large room and open room, roughly 20x10x9 and I;m not so sure the X-sub can handle that.

So many great subs in this price range, its hard to make a pick! Also noticed the HSU STF 1 on sale and I'm a big HSU fan so thats messing my decision up even more.

Will be using it for about 50% music and 50% gaming and movies. What do you guys recommend?

The ED is very linear and considered to be very musical, maybe not as much so as the HSU subs, but personally it would be my choice in terms of being the best bang for the buck. The X sub should work well in your room if placed and calibrated carefully, however it is no match for the ED. For more details on these subs I would check out Craigsub's comments on his ranking thread since he tested both of them.
