ok i'm still looking into the 360 as an extender... i just don't want to drop 800 on a set top box. i know you can use MyMovies through MCE, which i have, but has anyone found a way to stream with 5.1 and no quality loss? ie, not WMV?
also, does the 360 upscale this stuff? i've fooled around with it, but the picture was always garbage.

As of yesterday, http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/05/09/spring-07-video-playback-faq.aspx was valid and says only a handful of non-WMV can be streamed at all and only WMV audio includes 5.1.
And what's this stuff about 'quality loss'? Correctly convert a DVD capture to WMV9 and you still have DVD quality. Find a converter (somewhere, maybe) that uses WMA 9 Pro and you'll have all you want. If you have an example of WMV9 coming out bad, it was just badly done...

yes
use VideoReDo and you can have a .MPG with AC3
you can also use VOB2MPG and get .MPG with AC3
It only adds 10 min to the the process.
My issue right now is subtitles, I don't think you can have subtitles in a .MPG.
