Hey guys

Here's the original link to the software (http://www.mtis-solutions.com/SCD2012betav1.4.air). It was still working today, even though the site is down.

I have created PDFs of the instructions that I have saved.

Thanks a lot, Simon.

You saved us from a lot of trouble. I appreciate your willingness to help.

I have one more question. I did not receive the power supply for the light module from Oliver. Now it seems there is no way I can get one. I know it is a 12V power supply.

Can anybody let me know what type of connector I should get? Or any of you know a source where I can get an equivalent power supply?

Thanks to the helpful AVS forum community.

Your welcome.

I sourced a local power supply for my setup.

You need a 110V to 12VDC 1A regulated power supply.

Simon,

I have a 12V power supply, but the connector is different. What is the type of connector/cable I will need to match with SCD2012 star system module?

Thanks,

Raghu,

The connection to the 12V transformer, supplied by Star Ceiling Designer, was nothing more than screw down posts. No special plugs; just tighten down the stripped ends of your wire (that you provide) and daisy chain the modules together. I remeber the instructions said that you could connect up to 20 modules (daisy chain together) to the power supply. Hope this helps.

Oh, Almost forgot: raZorTT thank you so much for the docs & link. BTW, any chance you have the link to the "instruction video" that was referenced in hte documentation? Thanks again!

As monster0 said the connections on the SCD modules are just screw down posts. My 12V power supply has posts on it, so it was just a matter of connecting them with wire.

I am so bummed that this is no longer available! I was sold on this technology, and had it all planned on how I was going to integrate into theater... once I get to that point :). From what I can see, its the best and most flexible out there.

If anyone hears from Oliver, please let the forum know. Perhaps he is willing to clear some inventory :)

I gotta admit, as vague as the instructions are/were, in the end, his setup seemed very easy to work with 9once you knew how to hook it up).

Now imagine, if Oliver had followed through with the tutorials on the moon module, and shooting star, as he said he was going to do back in May of '09?
This would have bee the premiere star ceiling for all of us DIY'ers.

Hope he comes back and continues to do the star ceiling thing.

The Id's start at 1 go to something like 11. Thought I would try these
and create PDF's The links do not work for me. Maybe someone else
knows how to use this information.

Someone was asking about wiring the modules. From the source to the
power supply use electrical wire that meets your building code. To go
from the Power supply to the units is copper strand wire which is run
in a daisy chain from the power supply to each unit. Two wires. one
12+ and one 12-.

One of the Knowledge base articles describes this and shows a picture.

Hope this helps

Simon, I was hoping to ask you, once the modules are programmed with the base station, can you have them run, as programmed, wihout having to turn on the base station?
I thought I read that the "programing" is saved in each corresponding module that you have in your syetem, so you don't have to re-program them each time you power up the system.
So, my hope was that once I setup my modules, I can just turn on the power supply and all the modules that are hooked up to it, will preform as previously programmed, by the base station. Let me know what yuo're expreience has been. Thank you.

Yep once you have programmed the modules you don't need the base station plugged in. Each module remembers it's settings so you just have to hook it up to the power supply.

I haven't played with the IR codes yet though, so am not quite sure how that works, and if the base station needs to be connected to receive IR.

So from more research, I cannot find any type of light source that provides remote control on/off or dimming. Is there such a beast, or was Oliver's solution the only one on the market?

Man I am kicking myself.

Monster0
03-22-10, 11:48 AM
I know that there was a guy, advertising on eBay who's setup allowed for a remote on/off of 200 light points(stars), but that's it. Oliver's was definitely more option oriented.
I can't tell you how disappointed I am that he's not open for business. I was going to use his system in a demo room for future clients to see.:(

If you're willing to do a little work yourself you can also make your own. I made one awhile back that works great! It doesn't have remote control capability though. It is powered by a usb port from a computer and programmed by computer too. I think it cost me like 20-30 dollars total to do. It looks similar to the LED ones I saw here. Do a search for the thread, I think I finished it back in November or December.

It is easy to add on/off (ir based) with an IR relay board there is an 8 channel on that would work good for around $50 and you could use the extras for some other cool stuff :)

I too am disappointed and now looking at 123 and plan on using the extra relay in my MSC-400 for on off, doesn't help with dimming but I doubt I will want to dim anyway so not a big deal to me.

Thanks Jeff. 2 questions:

1) What is the IR device you are talking about (manufacturer/model)?
2) Who is "123"

JeffC
03-22-10, 09:44 PM
The relay bd I was thinking of was from here (http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1615.htm). But after a quick search the 12 channel came up they may have discontinued the 8 channel didn't look much further :) Simply learn the code and trigger an ice cube automotive relay (~$2) with this guy and you are good to go for on off.

As for 123 you can find them here (http://starceiling123.com/). I was looking at these guys some time ago but pretty much figured I would go with Stardesigner....enter plan B&C. Also Coolsky (http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/Coolsky_light_unit.htm)is on the list again. I got a quote from Fosi as well awhile ago and it is a great system but kind of spendy.

Hope this helps!

EDIT- just looked at the specs again and the Ice cube isn't needed as the contacts on these relays are rated at 10amps

Star Ceiling Designer was very responsive last year, but now I would advise caution. In early February I received part of an order placed in late August, but haven’t received the rest of it. It’s been a little over a month since then and I’ve sent at least 6 emails trying to get in touch with Oliver with no response. His phone number has been disconnected, and now his website is offline. I have spent over $1K on this project and it now seems I have been burned.

I sure hope Oliver comes back online. I too ordered in August last year, and received my order in mid November. I needed some more stuff, and it took a week and a half to receive a note telling me the store is "closed" and a refund. It's too bad, he has the best stuff for cool star ceilings imho. I'm glad I have enough illuminators to finish my project, although I wanted more.

This weekend I got my star ceiling finished with SCD illuminators. I have 2 2012 white twinkle modules, and a 2012 shooting star module. The star panel is 10 x 13' with 760 stars and 4 shooting stars. After setting the parameters the way I want them, it is really great. Since Oliver seems out of touch, I was hoping someone here can help me. On the shooting star module I can set the direction to reverse, the way I want, but when the power cycles, that parameter gets lost. All other parameters are saved between power cycles. Any ideas? This is frustrating since there was no markings on the unit of how to hook it up, and it would be a pita to change. Thanks.

So, as is apparent, Oliver "has left the building."

I finally got to the point in my HT construction that I was starting to install the Star Ceiling today, which I purchased from Oliver (a.k.a. Star Ceiling Designer) last year.
Well, come to find out that my power module and my shooting star module aren't working

I've never used them before, and just pulled them out of the box today, thinking that they would work, (being BRAND NEW and all). I did think it would be a good idea to test them, BEFORE installing them on the ceiling.
The Power module is completely dead. I think I can buy a replacement for it, but in reality, Oliver should replace an item that is D.O.A.
The shooting star module has a burnt/non-functioning LED. Any chance anyone knows what LED light is used in these modules?
Since no one is getting a response from Oliver, I suspect that I'm on my own to try and fix it. So, any help or insight that someone could offer, would be greatly appreciated. Heck, even some guidence from Oliver, would be welcomed. (I know, FAT CHANCE!:()

Hi every one , sorry for my long off time , i had some trouble in the last month of 2009 and some private matter to get solved. And since my shop was closed i was in Norway, to get to know my fiancé better. Sorry if i caused people here trouble.

But after 3 years of just work, and lots of finished project's , i needed some time out. And yes i will move to Norway.

Does that mean that SCD will close , i hope not , either the business will be taken over by some one , or i will reopen it after i have settled in the new environment. what may take a few month.

But to get down to the point :

Monster0: The power supply might still be in 220V mode, there is a switch on the side where you can set it to 110V, please try that.

The non functioning led , can either be fixed by me or you its a standard 5mm

Infiltrator: What order number do you have , so i can check up on what might went wrong with your order.

For every one else i will check this forum now regular , to see how needs some more stuff before my break or the business take over :)

Mh ok i have to look into that , they should keep the settings.
But right now there would be no fix for it since its not posible to update the firmware inside the shooting star module, without sending it in. So my best guess would be repluging the fiber would be the best way for now. But i will have a look at the source code.

Hi all,

For those that have the white twinkle modules: If I put all fibers from one LED port into one "quadrant of my ceiling," and all fibers from another led port into another quadrant, etc, does the twinkle look "unnatural," i.e. twinkling by quadrant? Or does everyone mix fiber from each LED port all over the sky surface?

Thanks!

Go to this site and click on whole sky chart. You can view star maps from any location at any time, like a birthday or anniversary by configuring your location and choosing a date and time. You can even choose a location down to a street intersection and the time to a particular minute. You can save your desired sky map to a disc and bring to a printing shop to enlarge and print a certain size as a template.

since i have now all parts here and on its way to me , the shipping of the orders will so be on the 28.05.2010 via canada express post.

I will inform every body of there tracking number.

Beside that eather i will continue this project in norway, or i sell it eather way,
the product will still get support from me , and the front end software will be made open source, so every body can further develop or customize the pc interface of the modules. The hardware software will remain private.

Best regards
Oliver

Hi SD,

Nice to see you around again. Question, when you say the front end software will be made open source, I'm guessing this is just for your current product line? Or is it backwards compatible to your 1st gen product. You were originally going to make it so I could utilize the current software to work with my unit and I could create my own scenes and such. Just curious if this is still part of what your doing or should I forget about it? Thanks either way, just want to know.

Hi Everyone,
I am pretty good with software. Would be glad to help maintain extend the software. Maybe SD will use SourceForge.net to make the software opensource.

Hoping like everyone else for this event.

I installed the software today and set up the USB port (mapped to COM 4) of the computer as explained in the document.

When I plug the base unit, the LED blinks purple twice, then red and finally stays green.

Now when I start the software, I get the message "Notice: Setting up Modules, please wait!!! if this message stays longer than 10 seconds, Restart the software."

The message doesn't go away. I restarted the software several times. No luck. Installed the software on another laptop. same result.

Any idea for troubleshooting?

The RGB light unit I have does not come ON when connected to power. Is this the default setting?

Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

Raghu

Raghu,

I believe the Power Supply has two settings. Source power 110 or Source Power 220. With the Power Supply unplugged and off. Is the switch in the proper setting for you power? If not this may be the problem. (just a guess)

PTHowe,

I did not get the power supply from Oliver. I got another 120V AC to 12 V DC power supply. I measured the voltage at the terminals and it shows around 12 V. But it seems the light unit is not working.

Do you have the DC connected correctly? Plus / Minus?

raghu13
05-31-10, 05:16 AM
Yes, I looked at your picture and connected it exactly like that. When you look towards the terminals, the right one is positive and the left one is negative. No indication that the unit is working. To make sure, I reversed the polarity also - still no luck.

But I can measure 12V DC at terminals. I suspect the light unit is dead. Is there anyway to check it?

Thanks for your help.

Mhh Raguh normaly the unit should not be dead on arrival , but of course you can send it in and i check it out. If you have followed all instructions and stil get no live sign out of your module. PTHowe has alredy mentioned waht i would first guess be check the power supply and the wirering.

For all other here waiting on there order. There was a small hickup in the parts delivery for the last batch. One Part (Ram for the modules) was on backorder and i had to find a new dealer for it, found one , but the shipping speed of that dealer lead to that the orders will shipthis coming friday hopefully. The chips needed to finish all orders will be send out today, but have been ordered since beginning last week.

Oliver,

I am not sure if the power supply is the problem. You missed to include the power supply for the kit I ordered. You did not respond when I sent e-mails and opened a support ticket. Then your site was down. Finally, I had to arrange a 12V power supply from another source. I measured the output and it gives 12V DC. Now I am not sure if the problem is with the power supply, RGB unit, or my connection.

I am really excited to see this happen. [And luckily, so is my wife.]

Thank you StarDesigner for putting out such a great product!

Hi PTHowe,

I solved the problem with the power supply. Since Oliver did not respond, I got another power supply from a different source. With this power supply, the light unit is working fine. But I am still getting the error when the software is started.

Can you please let me know the parameters you are using for serial proxy configuration?

Thanks,

Raghu

Hi Raghu, anyone else?

Where did you get the power supply? Still do not have a power supply?
Can you give me the specifics on the Power supply. This will allow me to find
one locally?

In regards to the setup. I get the if this is up for more than 10 sec then restart software. Since there are no modules to find other than the base station I do not know what is happening. I have not tried re-install because I do not know if there is an error or It is waiting for something that is just never going to happen.

Did you try following the video on the web site? Note Link to video.

Hi PTHowe,

I got the following power supply.

http://bestofferbuy.com/AC-to-DC-12V-1A-Power-Adaptor-with-5.4mm-DC-Plug---US-Type-%28110~240V%29-p-6758.html?currency=USD&utm_source=gbase&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=gbase

It is only $4.30 and shipping is free. It is so small I was not sure it can supply 1000 mA.
It works fine with one RGB unit. I kept it on for 24 hours. No overheating. Output steady at 11.96V. Incredible deal for 4 bucks.

The good news is that finally my base unit is working. I can now configure my RGB unit.

I had two issues.

1. I had not done the firmware update of base unit. I did it after watching the video.
2. I found the serial proxy gives the error "Unable to access serial port" error on Windows 7 laptop. But on my Windows XP laptop, everything works fine now.

Thanks a lot for your support.

I went looking on the site you got the power supply from.
Look what I found. It looks to be what StarDesigner was
offering.

You have a working system so that is all that maters.

Hi Oliver,

Hope you are well.

I was wondering if you were any closer to releasing the front end software? Would it be possible through that to add a fade up and fade off for the LEDs? Or would that be done in the hardware?

Cheers,
Simon

I had ordered a "replacement" set of fiber optic cables from Oliver a couple of months ago. He said he'd send me approx. 2000 ft. of .50mm; 2000 ft. of .75mm; and 1000 ft. of 1.0mm cable in this "replacement" set of cables, which I needed to complete my star ceiling.
Well, when I finally got around to getting the package and opening it, I discovered that I was only given about 500 ft of the .75mm fiber, which was the one I needed the most, since I was doing 2 shooting star modules with that diameter fiber.
I've tried to contact Oliver since then to let hime know of the situation, but now I get no reply from him whatsoever.
Has anyone heard from Oliver in the past couple of months? If you do, could you tell him to contact me? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if SCD2012betav1.2 was the latest version of Star Ceiling Designer's software available on his website before the site was taken down? I was checking his website occasionally for new versions. I thought I would come back to this discussion to see if anyone knew.

I need to drill through 1/2" and 3/4" MDF to place fibers in my project. I purchased some micro drill bits and one type of adapter chuck for my drill and/or rotary tool but I can't get it balanced and end up snapping drill bits. Not really sure if it's the greatest quality - maybe there is better on the market?

Does anyone know of a website where I can buy good quality micro drill bits and adapter chucks/collets for my project? Given I am going to be drilling upwards of 100+ holes, I will need a good quality set of bits for sure.

thanks,
Colleen

I bought some of the correct size drill bits for my fiber also when I started. They are just way too small and fragile to be drilling 100's of holes. I just ended up using a normal 1/16 drill bit for everything and it vent much better. Don't waist your time with micro bits.

Hi Colleen

For my holes I used a dremel with an entension arm because i was worried about snapping drill bits too. It was a breeze because there was no weight to it.

I drilled 800+ holes and didn't lose a single bit.

That's the flexible cable-like attachment, correct? Did you still need a micro collet or chuck at the end of that to hold the micro drill bits or was the extension able to accommodate micro bits without an adapter?

I have a knock-off brand dremel type tool so I might have to check the availability of an extension.

thanks,
Colleen

I still say that if you are covering in velvet any way why not just use a 1/16 drill bit? It is much easier to get the fiber through the bigger hole also.

This is a bit different project. I've built a pedestal style dining room table with a glass top. The fibers are going into the pedestal part of the table so it will light up/twinkle under the glass top. The pedestal is 2' x 2' x 3' high hollow cube built from MDF and painted with hammered silver paint (I left the bottom of the cube open to install the light unit). The glass top simply sits on top and is 54" x 54" x 1/2" thick. Perfect size to sit 8 people around. I have a Star Ceiling Designer system that will be installed. So the holes will be drilled into the top of the MDF cube (right underneath where the glass top sits) and maybe on the sides of the cube - I haven't quite decided yet the exact locations. All the guts of the system will be hidden inside the cube.

We've been using the table for almost a year and it's a wonderful dining room table but it will be awesome once the fibers go in!!!

Yep that's the one. I'm pretty sure I had to buy a new collet to hold the smaller drill bits :-/. It's like everything now days, they seem to make the real money in accessories. It was well worth the money though.

Did anyone successfully set up IR programming with Star Ceiling Designer's SCD-2012 modules? I don't have a Sony remote, so I tried setting up my Logitech Harmony 890 remote to emulate a couple different Sony TVs, and fired off a bunch of the commands to the SCD base station while in "Edit IR Code" mode, but no 0-253 code ever appeared in the box in the lower left of the GUI as expected. The Harmony remote doesn't let me set discrete codes, and I don't have another remote for it to "learn" from, so I have to pick a model number of a Sony device to emulate. If anyone has an idea of a particular Sony device (TV, VCR, etc) to emulate, I could try that. Otherwise I'm out of ideas. Are there some tricks to getting IR to work?

I also have a Shooting Star module which the base station doesn't recognize. Since SCD is no longer in the picture I'm going to try replacing the XBee wireless chip to see if that fixes the problem. Has anyone had to try that before?

In addition, I have a bunch of 0.5mm fiber left over if anyone is interested.

Thanks.

Not really, he basically said that life got in the way and that other priorities were more important.

He did right for a final batch of customer orders but anyone who got his product is pretty much on their own as far as support.

I did notice someone selling a discounted fiber optic star kit on the AVS sale ads. Might be a great solution for someone.

Any of you "orphaned" owners of SCD modules having trouble setting the options (color, dimming) on your modules? I've got the hw and initial sw setup complete, and it seems to be working fine. The color and twinkle units light up with their default config. But I can't seem to get to any of the screens required for custom settings. Apparently, you need Adobe AIR. I installed it, have reinstalled it, tried all kinds of things, but the system doesn't seem to recognize it. Any advice?
