View Full Version : Lost Season 1 and 2 anyone?
Dr Kain 09-21-07, 01:22 AM So am I the only one that thinks it is retarded to release Season 3 of Lost BEFORE the other two seasons? It is the same thing with Smallville and Sopranos. They are pretty much telling those that have not seen the series before to piss off.

The flip side is worse to me though. Loyal viewers have most likely already bought the first two seasons on DVD, so with season 3, we can avoid the double dip.
It's not like you can't rent the first two seasons on regular DVD to get caught up. If there's only an opportunity to release one season on HD for now, season 3 actually does make a certain amount of sense.
dildatonr 09-21-07, 07:14 AM well it seems pretty standard since it's day and date with the dvd release. It's timed to promote season 4. It's basically the same thing as releasing Shrek 3 and not the first 2 Shreks. The logic being day and date releases sell much more than catalog titles. I'm sure once the install base has gotten big enough we will see far more catalog titles in general.
I agree with Dr. Kain, I want 1 and 2 first, but I will buy 3 anyway to encourage them to make the other ones...
I'm just happy we're getting Lost on BD. Old seasons will come, let's not worry
Dr Kain 09-21-07, 10:39 AM But I cannot just start in the middle of Season 3, as I have no idea what is going on. Yeah, you make it sound easy to rent the previous seasons, but I shouldn't have to do that. Season 1 should be released in Oct, S2 in Nov, so that S3 can be in Dec.

This is how I feel as well. We will get Seasons 1 and 2 if this sells well.
dildatonr 09-21-07, 11:09 AM You shouldn't "have to" in a perfect world. But you also shouldn't be surprised this early in the HiDef game.
Lost is worth the hassle. Rent seasons 1-2 now - they look fantastic upconverted you won't be bummed. and this way you can have time to get caught up to watch season 3 when it comes out - and have enough time to watch it before season 4 starts airing.
I assure you - you will be an addict. and by the time season 1-2 comes out in HD you will WANT to go back and rewatch them again because of all the story arcs. and at that point seeing them again in HD will be a nice tasty treat to enhance our rewatching pleasure.
All things considered - when it's all said in done I'd be you will be thankful it works out this way as it will give you a greater appreciation for the repeated viewings down the road. I wouldn't say this for any other show. Lost is that good and addictive.
pwlcheng 09-21-07, 11:10 AM I wish they release a box set of season 1-3
dildatonr 09-21-07, 11:12 AM well I wish they'd release a boxset of seasons 1-6.
Today.
phansson 09-21-07, 11:16 AM The first and second season are some of the better looking dvd's I have watched. I have watched them upconverted on my 106" PJ and they look fantastic.
Personally I think it is better to keep up the date and date releases first and adding catalogs when you can.
I'm getting it. Those Hawaiian mountains are going to look awesome in HD.

i agree. also, at first didnt know it was going to be so good so i dont ahev HDTV captures, at least for season 2 and 3 I already do. not as good as blu-ray 1080p for sure, but, if anything, yeah i'd rather be buying season 1 than 3.
same for 24, i heard they will release last season. i would've way rather be able to go through and watch ti all in hidef than crappy SD i had to to catch up on all the earlier seasons.

how if they ever put out 1 and 2 you could double dip then, and nobody is forcing you too anyway, so i dont see how this prevents any double dipping.
yeah, he could rend them on SD DVD to catch up, but why suffer through crappy SD DVD for such a beautiful show?
and for 24 i had to watch it all in SD to catch up.

I guess they are trying to be current.
It is interesting to see Warner doing this, as well as Disney.
Fox and Universal seem to be starting from S1 with Prison Break and BSG.
I may give Prison Break a chance on BD :) For Lost they will need to do S1 before I give it a chance...

I'm telling ya man you're missing out! Get caught up now, season 4 starts in feb.
R Miyashiro 09-21-07, 07:24 PM I'm in the same boat, and have not watched the first two seasons and will wait until the first two seasons are released before collecting it. I like how Battlestar Galactiga is starting out with season one and will be buying it even though I already own the standard def editions of the first two seasons.
mdc3000 09-21-07, 07:44 PM I'm all for them releasing back seasons, but I personally won't be rebuying a ton of TV shows, so having them go day and date with Season 3 is exactly what I want.... in fact, I was kind of pissed off when Fox recently announced that Prison Break Season 1 is hitting BD but no mention yet of Season 2, which is the one I'd want to buy right now... so I think there are people in column A and B.
Once Season 1 is released on blu-ray, I will be going format neutral. However, if Buena Vista releases the first season on Xbox Live Marketplace, I can save myself a few hundred bucks. Hopefully, they do both.
I think there will be a lot more interest in season 3 now; as most hardcore fans will already have the DVD's and double dipping with these tv shows can get expensive. I'm sure that if sales are good on season 3 (relatively speaking) that sooner or later the first seasons will be releaed, as with other catalog titles.

Considering an HD hour long show(not to mention extended time for the pilot and season finale) would cost 3-6 bucks (240 points for 30 minute HD shows currently) at 23 episodes a season - I don't think you'd be saving much money, you'd prolly end up paying more. and you wouldn't have a physical copy.

It doesn't "prevent" any double dipping, but I know I'm not the only uber-fan who *would* have otherwise ended up buying 3 just to have it to watch, even if it was standard DVD. Nobody's forcing anybody to spend disposable income on entertainment; it's just that putting 3 out on HD is a good thing for the true fans who have followed the show over the air and have been acquiring the content in whatever form they can as soon as they can.
In other words, many of us would have double dipped season 3 without complaint, but now we don't have to.

yeah for fans of the show it's perfect timing since we can rewatch season 3 to prep for season 4. I'm beyond stoked for season 4. The condensed show schedule I think will be the best thing to happen for the show, much less filler.
I'm getting it. Those Hawaiian mountains are going to look awesome in HD.Hawaiian mountains!?!?! SPOILER THAT PLEASE!
;)
Matt_Stevens 09-22-07, 10:13 AM As good as the SD DVD's are, even on a projector, they are nothing compared to the 720p HD broadcasts, so imagine what 1080p BD will look like.
I am game for Season 1 any damn time it hits BD.
I am game for Season 1 any damn time it hits BD.
+1 to that. Gimme season 3 on BRD asap and whenever they get around to re-doing s1 and s2, I'll gladly double dip. but, just give me maximum notice so i can unload the sd-dvds on ebay before their value nose-dives further. :)
KO
Dr Kain 09-22-07, 12:54 PM I'm telling ya man you're missing out! Get caught up now, season 4 starts in feb.
Except I won't watch it on TV. Except for Simpsons, and a few other toons, I no longer watch anything on cable due to the excessive commercial breaks, piss poor picture quality, and being forced to watch it when THEY tell me to watch it.
giantchicken 09-22-07, 12:58 PM I am glad they did it this way. Had they released season one first, it wouldn't have sold that well since most of the fans already own it and not all of them would pay for a double dip. Then they would give us a line about not releasing further seasons due to lack of interest. Starting with season three will give them a more accurate idea of how many fans out there are willing to pay more money to get the show in high def. If this release does well, future seasons (as well as seasons one and two) will certainly be considered for high def release.
Dr Kain 09-23-07, 12:26 AM But I'm not buying Season 3 until I own Season 1 and 2.
crey014 09-23-07, 12:43 AM This is what I'm worried about:
That some of the future seasons will be region coded.
And/or the cases would change half way (petty I know, but my australian release of the harry potter series doesn't look good with half of it on a cardboard case and half on plastic).
I'll just wait for the boxset, unfortunately. :(
This was a one off show for me. Most of it I really enjoyed the first time, but I have no interest in going back and watching it again. Although maybe if the put on a PiP track that actually gives you some damn answers while the show plays, it might be worth getting the set. :D
mdc3000 09-23-07, 09:57 AM A one off? You must not have liked it as much as me... I've watched the first two seasons twice already on disc and I'm going to watch S3 a few times for sure - you pick up little things every time - such a well crafted show.

Well if you knew everything in S1, they wouldn't give you S2 LOL
Thing on the show are slow, 22 Ep is like 40 days in Real Time..
Jedi2016 09-23-07, 11:07 AM Personally, I don't feel the need to double-dip the first two seasons at this point. Authoring these discs take time, and releasing the first two seasons on Blu-ray before S3 would likely mean a significant delay for S3 itself. Which means I'd end up buying it on DVD, which would defeat the purpose entirely.
I'm confident that once S3 is released, they'll go back and start remastering and authoring S1/2 for Blu-ray. But I probably won't buy them unless there's a real night-and-day difference between them. Otherwise, I'm sure I'll be perfectly happy with the DVD versions. That's my take on most of the catalog titles they're releasing on the format. I'm only going to buy a few of them a second time for high-def. It's mainly stuff "from this point on" that I'm buying specifically in high-def.
The flip side is worse to me though. Loyal viewers have most likely already bought the first two seasons on DVD, so with season 3, we can avoid the double dip.

As much as I have enjoyed LOST, I cant imagine watching any episode more than 2 times max. Just rent the first 2 seasons on DVD and then go for season 3 on BR.
