View Full Version : HR20 testing with 103b Sat

My H20 immediately got the "congrats message" when I tuned to Ch. 498. However my HR20 only got a blank screen (after several attempts) even though it shows a good signal level on the 103(b) satellite thru both of the HR20 tuners. After some investigation I was able to get the congrats message on my HR20, but only thru one of the two tuners in the HR20. I don't know why this would be the case since a good indicated signal level should mean that both of my b-band converters and tuners are working OK. I expect others are having this same problem with their HR20's. If this is the case, then whether you are getting the congrats screen or a blank screen will depend on which tuner your HR20 picks when you tune to Ch. 498.

I suggest HR20 owners try the following and report their results here:

1. You can test both of your HR20 tuners by first starting a recording of 2 programs at the same time (on channels other than 498)

2. tune to ch. 498 and when prompted to select which program to stop recording select the first one listed. Note if you get the congrats message or a blank screen.

3. tune back to the channel for which you had stopped the recording in step 2 and start the recording again

4. tune to ch. 498 and when prompted to select which program to stop recording, select the other recording (i.e., not the one you stopped in step 2) . Note if you get the congrats message or a black screen.

UPDATE 1: FYI - I have confirmed both of my B-Band Converters that I normally use with my HR20 are working OK. I tested them one at a time connected to my H20 and I get the congrats message in every case. Therefore the issue with one tuner in my HR20 only producing a blank screen on Ch. 498 is not an issue with the B-Band Converter.

UPDATE 2: Directv has added HD test channels 480 and 481. It appears that even if you get a blank screen on Ch. 498, but do successfully get a message that the BBC is working OK on both channels 480 and 481 you will probably be good to go for the new HD channels. You can use the above procedure to test this for each of the two satellite tuners in the HR20. To do this follow the above 4 steps, but instead to tuning to just 498 also tune to channels 480 and 481 in steps 2 and 4 above.

Good idea.

Both tuners received Congrats message.

I run a seperate OTA line from my outdoor attenna.

I think many people are having trouble when they are using some type of splitting lines from their tuner and OTA.

I get the Congrats on my 1080P tv (HR-20) but not on my 720p set (H-20). I wonder if it is an issue with only 720 sets?

My H20 is set to 720p output (to a plasma) and it gets the Congrats message OK. Have you tried swapping the B-Band Converters that are connected to the two receivers to see if that makes a difference?

Called tech as I have searching signal and very low readings for 103b and they had no clue as far as what the deal is. I pretty much explained what the issues could be, but to my surprise they are sending a tech out tommorrow to check everything. I was expecting 2 weeks or more. Hopefully they bring more B band converters or a new box in case my tuners are bad.

Odd.

Mid 90s on one tuner, straight 0s on the other for 103(b).

I don't have an OTA.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Bad cable run, all systems go, captain.

The H10 receiver is not compatible with the new satellites/new HD channels. You need the current H20 HD receiver or HR20 HD-DVR (or the upcoming H21 or HR21) and the 5 LNB dish.

Just fixed mine. Switched out the b band converters, but that was not the issue. The dish was out of alignment as they have no way to test or set for 103b at the moment, so installers have been guessing since they had nothing to go before the 498 broadcasts started.

Papernut-I am having the same problem as you somewhat. I get a "searching for signal" on both tuners on 498..ditto 480 BUT on 481 I get this message-" 103B-Band Even(18V).BBC confirmed working." What does this mean ? Am I only getting half working of what should be ? Thanks for the help.

Run setup and make sure multiswitch is set to 6x8 and not 4x4.

Thanks fafner ! When I go through set up on the HR20, I don't see any place to set the multiswitch. It is in my attic somewhere. Is that where you have to set it to 6x8 or is there a way to do it during the on screen set up ? Thanks again for the help. DTV is sending me new B Band Converters but I don't think that is the problem. I have interchanged them between 2 units and they don't help. During set up it shows me getting 5 sattelites including 103 but shows "FAILED" on 99.

You should see a screen during Setup that defualts to "multiswitch" = 4x4 on the screen. You need to change that to 6x8.

If you don't see that screen, something else must be wrong.

Try again by clicking Menu, then Help & Settings, then Setup.
