Great article but what's with this:

"with Microsoft fighting both Sony's graphically superior PlayStation 3..."

I love how they just casually toss that out as fact.

Well, I actually think it is. Its just that there is no game currently that shows its full potential. The day will come though. For now, it serves its purpose well as my Blu-Ray player.

Good article btw! Halo 3 game of the year anyone?!

The PS3 graphical hardware is actually a generation behind the 360's.

I think the jury is still out over which system is graphically superior. It certainly shouldn't be considered fact that the PS3 is graphically superior considering the hardware and the history of multiplatform games.

As for Halo 3, I think Bioshock, Metroid Prime 3, Call of Duty 4, and UT3 will give it a run for GoTY honors.

I'm sorry, but I too think the ps3 will eventually surpass the 360 graphically.

It's just too hard to develop for. When the times comes, and it is better, I'll buy it then if there are games for it I like. otherwise...not interested.

Back to the topic. Excellent read. Very interesting to see them actually test a game that I've been saying ALL ALONG. only took 20 years :)

it's too late to matter anymore; ps3 will have a graphical test piece, and the 360 will have one, and one will be maybe better, but it won't really matter; all the cross platform games are pretty similar, so i would concede that it really doesn't ****ing matter anymore; it's already been proved that they're on a similar level

i had high hopes for the cell processor, but it seems its potential is tempered by it's complication

anyway, the answer to which console is graphical superior is: it's a moot point

It's great to see how much thought went into this game... I am usually very skeptical but I have bought into the hype with this... More so because they are starting with a very good base in Halo 2.

With Microsoft's money backing these luxuries (the testing explained in the article) small developers can't afford, we should all be in for a treat!

Graphical horsepower wise, they are both pretty similar, but the 360 has the edge in features and a slight horsepower edge.

Consoles always used to be about the different features present in their graphics chips that made them stand out from PCs. But now a days, the PC graphical hardware has gotten so strong that it doesn't really make much sense to customize the hardware. In the last generation, MS stuck a bog standard graphics chip in the XBox, and Sony did a 100% custom implementation. Of course, the XBox blew the PS2 away in terms of graphics. The PS2's hardware was cool, but really hard to program.

What is odd is that in the 360 and PS3, the roles are somewhat reversed. The PS3 got the bog standard PC graphics chip this time. But the 360 got a unified shader chip a year in advance of the unified shader release on the PC. It also got 10MB of embedded DRAM. And the chip serves as the memory and IO controller to the 360. As well, the 360 has a pretty cool unified memory architecture that hearkens back to the good 'ol Amiga days. Yet, Microsoft has tackled the API for the 360 in such a way that this very different architecture is actually easy to code!

People see the PS3 as having the radical architecture and the 360 being like a PC. But, personally, as a hardware engineer, I see the 360 as being the setup with the radical architecture and the PS3 as being more like a PC.

No doubt! I read that article a month ago, and I was really impressed at the amount of work and testing that has gone into Halo 3. I don't think we have EVER seen a game with this much polish on any system! Kudos to MS and Bungie for not trying to rush this game out the door before it was truly finished!

Great article - thanks for the link.

It is remarkable how much effort goes into games these days.

When I am getting my ass kicked on Legendary next week and there is no way out, I am going to send Pagulayan some hate mail. ;)

I am not sure it was that article or another I read about Bungie admitting to really rushing Halo 2 which many of us realized while playing. It remains to be seen if the extra polish will make a difference but I am very hopeful.

I have no doubt that this game is going to be fun. I often wonder how long i'll be playing a game when I buy it. 3 months; 3 years?

Nothing aganist the game but:

"When Halo 2 debuted three years later, it again broke new ground by letting gamers square off against their friends on the fledgling Xbox Live online service."

Broke new ground? lol....You've got to be kidding me, I think the writer isn't much of a gamer....needs to get the facts straight.

Yeah that is ridiculous... It did a lot for online console gaming but I wouldn't say it broke ground for anything...

Live's solid state gamertags broke ground in my opinion but that isn't Halo related.
