A collector's edition of Braveheart is due on DVD from Paramount on December 18.

No word on a HD-DVD version, but I would be genuinely surprised if they didn't release this catalogue title at the same time, or close to. Aside from Gladiator, its one of the recent historical epics that the current HD fan base shows up in droves to buy.

Unless you support Blu-Ray only.

I hope you're right. I'd get both Braveheart and Gladiator in a heartbeat.

Come on Paramount! Pretty Please!!! :)

Even if Paramount decided on a $80 MSRP I would still pick it up :)

Edit: Hope I didn't give Paramount a new idea :(

I believe that it's available for download in high def via Xbox Live. They know we want it. So it has to be at least somewhere on their radar for HD DVD.

I wonder if they are restoring it. It's not THAT old of a movie, but the last time I watched in HD on TV it looked pretty damn dirty.

Oh cmon!! Yeah, don't give them any ideas. We are nearing laserdisc pricing for HD media. Did you guys see the retail on the blu ray of Super Bad? $43.95MSRP! A very dangerous trend.

Just watched the standard dvd the other night, really nasty print used for that, its like the spattered the film with mud, needs one hell of a clean up job done on the HD DVD version if its going to be good and if they take it from the older print.

Hope it is coming to HD DVD, needs to get a better transfer thats for sure. More extras would not go a miss either. 3 HD DVD set would be nice :D

Its great that Paramount is HD DVD supporting - but they still need to release the titles. I hope there were not certain restrictions built into the deal, making Paramount hold back releasing HD DVDs of certain titles until the exclusivity deal is over.

Releasing DVD-only titles would be a real slap in the face of us hoping for HD titles of our favorites.

the mission impossible hd dvd set (paramount) has been out for as long as i've paid attention to buying hd dvds. they've been in the business for some time now. not to mention the exclusivity deal they struck with toshiba to support hd dvd. also dreamworks was a part of this deal. expect to see more of them in the coming weeks/months.

What is wrong with the studios. Taking their time to release some of the best movies out there on HD

I downloaded and watched it a couple of months ago on XBox live in hidef. The picture quality was excellent! So, I agree that it might be released on HD-DVD. For the record, I watched the SD-DVD version as well, and that was not pretty needs an upgrade, one of the early DVD releases. I believe it was the same master as the laser disc version, which I own. The sound is awesome on the LD version in DD.

One word: Fox. This is a co-production, which probably means Fox will have some say in the HD release of this film, as it owns worldwide rights outside North America.

Interestingly enough Gladiator is a Co-Production with Universal and Dreamworks. So I'd figure that one could easily be in the pipe line for release.

They tampered with that DVD release. The laserdisc edition was much better (and closer to the theatrical presentation), so there's nothing to "clean-up" Obviously the elements do exist for a good HD release.

All that matters is who has the distribution rights in the country in question. There are plenty of films that have a HD-DVD release in one country and a BD release in others.

Fox just don't have distribution rights in Braveheart. They actually own the film jointly with Paramount. Fox and Paramount will likely share mastering costs. I doubt we'll see this one released on HD DVD unless it also shows up on BD at the same time outside the US. Ditto for Titanic.

I too would buy these day & date, although I would only buy Gladiator if it was the extended (director's) cut.

From the day I got an HD-DVD player I've been waiting for movies like gadiator, braveheart, saving private ryan ect. I think these movies would be more beneficial to HD than 1.5 hour comedies or 20 year old film transfers.

Somewhat correct. They both bought into the movie, but it is still 100% a Paramount movie in the US and same for Fox for the rest of the world. Which actually a pretty even trade as the US is 35-40 of the average blockbuster release sales and easier to distribute, and is something like 50-60% of DVD sales with again easier distribution. Movies are done like this all of the time, for example Prestige which was released by Warner in the UK.

So no Paramount can release it anytime they please now that it is out of the pre-agreed theatrical and initial media run.

I can't understand why titles like Breakfast Club, Caddyshack, and Mallrats are on HD DVD, but the ones you mentioned are not.

(I know, I know, someone's going to tell me The Breakfast Club has never looked better!)
