View Full Version : (spoilers) A twist on the Bioshock moral dilema

One thing I wonder is why no one has talked about the moral dilema Bioshock poses: killing Big Daddies.

I chose to save all the Little Sisters, as I got to towards the end and I came to understand better where Big Daddies come from, I got a sick feeling about all the Big Daddies I had killed. I mean they were as innocent as the children I was saving.

So that was a nasty twist that snuck up on me: in choosing help the little sister, you also choose to kill the big daddy.

Anyone feel regret because of that?

Yeah, I had that same thought. I just tried to think of the Big Daddies as beyond saving, so that in order to rescue the Little Sisters I had to take out the beyond-hope Big Daddies.

I've never been able to get into games where you have to play as the bad guy (like the Hitman games), or to choose the evil path when there's a good-versus-evil choice (like Knights of the Old Republic). I know it's kinda ridiculous, but I would've felt guilty if I'd tried to harvest the Little Sisters.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one!

that's mildly ironic, given your forum name.

I actually thought of that the first time I came upon one. Here's the only character in the game who has nothing against me, so I go out of my way to make him fight me by attacking the only thing he cares for. I never felt that way with the Rosies though, something about them made me feel they had it coming, lol. I think it was because of all the weapons.

Big daddy's gave me lots of money and parts. That was worth unloading electric shells into him for.

uhh Hitman is not the bad guy... he is doing his job that the catholic church has given him... to save people as the church sees fit. kind of like the CIA or FBI

Sorry, that's not the best choice. The agent in Hitman isn't the epitome of evil, though he's not really a good guy, either. Maybe I should have referred to games like GTA. My point is I'm not into games where I'm encouraged to attack, say, the innocent bystanders. Just a quirk of mine, I guess.

Big Daddies to me are just part of the game. They are big oafs who deserve to be turned into hamburger meat in my opinion. Anything standing between me and getting out of this wretched city deserves to be fragged with the fury of a thousand chainsaws whirring all at the same time. As a matter of fact, now that I think about it, the big daddies deserve this fate because they are hopeless brainless sloths who pose as guardians. Feel my wrath, metal hippo guy!

Yeah but didn't the game reveal that the Big Daddies were actually homeless people, forced into becoming the protectors of the Little Sisters?

Whatever they are they deserve a fiery death and I'm the one to give it to them

That's definitely something I felt too towards the end of the game. By the way, I also chose to save the Little Sisters. Especially when you're gathering the armor to become a big daddy yourself and to see kind of what they went through. It would have been an even more impactful reflection for those players who chose to harvest the LS's and then to see what they were subjected to in the end as well.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the morality play of the game and like another poster above, I rarely choose to be a bad guy in a game if given a choice and I steer clear of games where I'm forced into a position like that, take for instance, the GTA games. I used to enjoy them when I was younger but now I don't find any enjoyment out of killing innocents in games.

Since it's been brought up a couple of times now, and sorry for the OT. . .

When in a GTA game are you forced to kill innocents? Every mission I can remember involved fighting rival gangs. And in Vice City you're taking out a crime family.

While I completely agree with you, however, even driving a car you can accidentally run over pedestrians. God knows how many times my horrible driving skills took out innocent civies in GTA and Crackdown. Not to mention you are still playing a criminal when its all boiled down.

Don't get me wrong, I like the GTA series and in all likelihood, I'll pick up GTA 4, its just my $.02...
