For you owners fortunate enough to have a dts-ma capable receiver and have done the bitstream upgrade for the Samsung 1400 please list your impressions of the following:

Dts core to MA
Films and scenes which stand out in MA
Comparison to the PCM and Dolby TrueHD tracks you've heard
General impressions of the technology

Thanks in advance!!

Lossless=lossless=lossless. Why would you expect one to sound different from another? The only difference would be the in mix or in the way the receiver processes the format, not in the format itself.

This is not like the difference between DTS and DD on DVD where there's a significant difference. Here the end result is the same. PCM=TrueHD=DTS-MA.

Actually guys i'm kinda looking for the reviews of the FOX titles since there is no PCM or TRUHD to compare to.

True. X3 is significantly improved with HD MA. THe closing scene where Jean goes all Phoenix is just a treat in full surround sound.

Sure, why wouldn't a disc sound better with Lossless sound? If it sounded good with the DTS core I could only imagine how good the full lossless track would be.

Hopefully the guys at Sony Japan will get on the stick and add DTS-MA decoding to the PS3 one of these days.

Thanks Madpoet, that's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for!

Anyone else have comments on any of the other titles and any specific scenes?

I don't actually have the Samsung player, so I can't experience the joy of DTS-HD MA yet, but I do think it's the best lossless codec. Before everyone starts throwing stones, though, let me explain:

Most people do NOT have their systems set up correctly to play lossless audio of any format! Both PCM and True HD are pretty much always accompanied by a Dolby Digtial 640k track for the majority of people to listen to... DTS-HD MA has a DTS core... which is superior to the secondary DD track hands down. So the majority of people get a superior 1.5M DTS track... and eventually the true home theater buffs can get the lossless DTS=HD MA track. It's the best of both worlds.

Just my $.02... but I think Fox has had the right idea all along. It's a shame that its taken far too long for DTS and the receiver/player companies to get the format, because to me it really is the best way of supporting everyone with the b est audio they can handle.

Also TrueHD tracks aren't the same as their PCM counterparts if DialNorm is applied, so lossless doesn't always equal lossless. AFAIK, DTS MA doesn't have dialnorm applied, at least I've never heard anyone say it does.

I believe that if there was a movie with both a DTS MA & DolbyTrueHD sound track on it, they would would sound different... I'm not going to say ones going to be superior. But hey, there are alot of different bread companies out there... Using for the most part the same core ingredients.. But they look, feel and taste different. I believe the same thing applies to the lossless codecs. There both gonna deliver soundtracks that are encoded with there proprietary equipment. So they both should sound different... Just my .02

I just watched Pirates of the Carribean with the uncompressed PCM track which got steller audio reviews, and I can see why! The thing that bothers me is that it has such dynamic range that it can over power most mid sized home theater setups if played at reference.
I would expect that the only difference between the PCM and DTSMA would be how good DTS decoders function between the different hardware manufacturers and how good the track was initially recorded and encoded. End result, uncompressed PCM. Dito for Dolby TrueHD.

I'll echo that sentiment on POTC: During the end credits, the nuances of the score are simply astounding. You feel like you are sitting in on the recording session.

you guys must have highly tuned ears of the Nth degree to distinguish the differences between the lossless formats.... heck what do i know, i could only tell the difference between DD and DTS.... DTS is far superior to my ears... i have yet to discern the difference between DTS and lossless pcm audio though as i haven't found an audio system for my home theater yet..... yeah i'm not doing my hd media any justice with the lowly built-in speakers of my sammy display, but i do adore the visual eye candy afforded by 1080p viewing.... once the sound system gets in, i'll revisit what i saw visually in all hd media glory (both visual and audio).... well on a budget anyway...

that is why i love this sight....
