View Full Version : OK, I've searched and zero -- Is Identity genuinely worthwhile, or is it watch once?

"Identity" supposedly has good picture quality and audio, but I really prefer to pick up titles that have repeat viewing value -- and I'm talking about the story and performances, not how great it makes your system look.

How do people feel "Identity" ranks? Watch it once and set it aside, or something to come back to periodically?

For me; it was one of those oh I get it... movies. It was ok the first go-round, cant see myself watching it again though.

Good movie but I wouldn't buy it. I've completely tooled down my purchases on blu-ray to stuff I'm 100% positive I will watch more than 2-3 times. I don't want to end up like I did in the DVD days.

Worth a rental IMHO. Good but had no interest in a re-watch.

I watched it once and set it aside (I'm talking the SD version). However, this thread has made me want to watch it again. Maybe I'll pop it in tonight.

Identity is not a very good movie. Sort of like that Jennifer Aniston movie where she has an affair and something else happened, I don't know but it was dumb.

^ Identity was NOTHING like Derailed...at all. Identity was a by the book, run of the mill psycho thriller that is barely worth renting, so I certainly wouldn't suggest owning it. James Mangold has gotten significantly better lately, but this one was bad.

Thanks all -- in that case I'll settle for just "Kung Fu Hustle" as my final order out of the current Amazon $15 batch. It's always so tempting to go ahead and buy the titles when the price is lowered, but if it's not a repeater, price alone isn't really that great an excuse!

Sure hope Amazon has a Fox sale in the not too distant future :)!

Sorry, but "Kung Fu Hustle" isn't anywhere near as good as "Identity" is...

i thought Identity was good. I own in but haven't watched it yet on blu-ray....in hindsight, maybe not the best choice for a purchase, but I think I bought it during a dry week.

I disagree. Not even the same ballpark and I liked Identity.

To the OP, I own both and I've watched KFH three times and Identity once. I like both films but KFH is much more rewatchable for me.

Not arguing, but I'm wondering why you say that? (Recognizing they are two different styles of film.)

I hear you. I've always been very careful about what DVD titles I pick up (likewise with LD before that), but I've still ended up with piles of them (both, and literally :)!) I do NOT want to go there yet again with HD titles!

Rent it first. I tend to disagree with most people on here. I really liked the movie. I've watched it 3-4 times (DVD, and once on blu-ray). On the other hand, I thought 1408 was extremely over-rated, so it goes to show that people with similar tastes may still not like the same types of movies.

Funny thing.. on IMDB, they are both rated fairly high (7.3, 7.4) especially when you consider the genres they are in.

I think it has fairly decent re-watch value. I've watched it a couple of times and used to own it on DVD. The 'twist' is only good for the first viewing, but the rest of the movie still holds up pretty well on subsequent viewings: the great cast and creepy atmosphere get me every time.

^What ADBNZ said.^

I thought it was a really neat flick. I've come back to it a couple of times but it's not something that has as much replay value as, say, Casino Royale or Batman Begins. Your mileage may vary but I would say it's definitely worth seeing once in any case.

Have to agree with that. Kung Fu Hustle I bought, watched once and then sold. Identity I've only seen twice. Doesn't have too terribly much re-watch value but right I feel like watching it again.

Here is the note I made in my movie database after watching the Blu-ray rental form Netflix:

Good sound FX track. NOT FOR REPEAT VIEWINGS

But I bought it anyway :). I am a sucker for bad movies with good sound tracks.

Uh, oh -- looks like I'm cornered!

My only options appear to be to either take a look or pick it up. "Kung Fu Hustle" seemed to do really well in the reviews -- especially Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kung_fu_hustle/, 90%). Hard to imagine it could be a dubious choice, especially as I enjoyed "Shaolin Soccer" -- another that I intend to EVENTUALLY get back to (if only I didn't have so many titles still awaiting first viewing :(.)

I picked up KFH when Best Buy had it on sale for $13.99, but I haven't opened it yet. I rented Identity when Blockbuster first got BDs, and it was entertaining. I wouldn't call it much more than a rental, unless it was $10 or less. Great PCM soundtrack, and the movie itself was a 7.5/10 in my book. I don't think you'll lose on a rental.

Identity is definitely worth a rent. It's a one off movie for me personally though, but a fun movie the first time through. Although a Cusack fan could probably get some repeat viewing out of it.

Kung Fu Hustle is definitely worth the purchase though. If you're a Stephen Chow fan, it's a no-brainer.

I thought it was a good movie, and had great pq and imagery. The story is more of a 'watch once' thing; but I don't rent movies; so I bought it. I'm not sure if I'll ever want to watch it again, but, hey you never know...:p.

It's a good movie with an interesting twist. In my view though, all those kinds of suspense thrillers with 'didn't see that coming' twists are good for first time viewing, after that the movie loses it's potency for me.A rental at best....

Bingo.....its funny that us geeks have a second chance at "collecting" movies. This time around, use discretion and dont end up with a bunch of $1 dollar trade ins that you'll never watch again.

I didnt like Identity even the first time I saw it so.... ya better rent it first.

i watched it on dvd. bought the blu-ray and watched it, and have no regrets. i'm actually surprised so many people here aren't into the movie...in my opinion, it's one of the better blu-ray exclusives.

I have that Identity blu ray and gonna sell it, watch it once, nice PQ and AQ, but don't have the chemistry for me to re-watch.

Identity is the kind of movie that I'll go back to every now and then when I have guests over. It's a flawed movie, but it is ultimately effective in what it tries to do. Its sound track really draws you in right from the beginning.

I agree. I hated this movie the first time I saw it on cable a few years ago because of the ending, but watching it again on BD my feelings changed. The PQ is often really outstanding, and it is generally quite watchable on reviewings, when you know what the ending is.

Good movie with a weak ending that sort of ruins it. If not for the weak ending, I would say worthy of repeat viewing. Alas, I bought it on DVD and watched it once, was turned off by the ending, and never watched it again.

Identity... saw it once on DVD rental, thought it was really good and may see it again (rental again).

Kung Fu Hustle... I had the DVD and bought the BluRay release. I must've seen is seven times by now. Awesome film.

Obviously, my tastes are much different from many people here. I enjoyed the movie and I thought the ending was fantastic. Many reviewers also liked it (Ebert gave it three stars), and Hi-Def Digest gave it outstanding ratings for both PQ and AQ. I've watched it several times to pick up on clues that were not apparent to me the first time around. The director's commentary is very helpful in that regard. At the price, it seems to me that you can't lose.

I'm a stephen chow fan. Bought Shaoilin Soccer dvd years back at an asian store and loved it. Bought Kung Fu Hustle BD a couple weeks ago during Best Buys sale. I was horribly disapointed. Laughed out loud once. Didn't find it entertaining one bit. Sold it right away.
