View Full Version : Where's Universal's love for The Office?
Citricfire 09-23-07, 12:26 AM Why haven't I heard anything about Universal bringing The Office to HD-DVD? I thought I might have seen something mentioned in previous threads, but searching took me to nadda. With Heros being what it is, and other shows like Star Trek, Smallville, etc. appearing on high-def players, what's up with my favorite show on t.v.? Has anyone heard talk? Rumors? Anyone?
Thanks in advance.
Foxarwing42 09-23-07, 12:35 AM Star Trek, Smallville, and Heroes are the obvious types of shows to bring to HD DVD because they can show off what your home theater can do. Sadly the audience of hi-def media is still very small. As such they can only release so much, and what they do release has to be something that'll sell to the audience out there now.
The Office probably isn't a hi-def audience thing but I'm sure we'll see it come soon.
Plus, The Office on DVD looked amazing enough. I now support both formats and I was blown away at how good The Office looked on DVD when upconverted. Not that I would have chosen DVD over HD-DVD if given the choice...
nakedeye 09-23-07, 01:00 AM looked decent for an sd dvd, but go back and watch an hd episode. freaking blows it out of the water.
been waiting for these in hd for a while now.

I highly disagree, it looks like ass, sorry to be so blunt but HD DVD has given me NO patience for SD, and this series up converted was very soft on my 1080p tv, I actually thought the encode was messed up.

And I disagree with this. Upconverted by the XA2 I am extremely impressed with the sd dvd on my 110" screen from my RS1.
wmaangel 09-23-07, 03:02 PM To me, NBC always appears to have the worst looking broadcast HD video quality (and before someone claims it's due to my cable or satellite service, I have FIOS TV which is generally considered the cleanest/least compressed provider)....
That being said, I too found the 3rd season DVD I popped in my A2 the other day to look REALLY great upconverted! Definitely as good or better than the HD broadcast I watch on Thursday nights....
Jay Mammoth 09-23-07, 04:16 PM I would buy the Office and My Name Is Earl on HD.
DeathKnight 09-23-07, 09:08 PM The Office probably isn't a hi-def audience thing but I'm sure we'll see it come soon.
Apparently it was enough of a "hi-def audience thing" because they shot it in HD and broadcasted it in HD.
I would have gobbled up an HD DVD release of season 3 in a heartbeat. Unfortunately they didn't release it or announce any plans to so I settled for the DVD set. Still looks good upconverted though.

Haven't heard anything about it either. Not sure why. We may hear something in the next few months or next year.
giantchicken 09-23-07, 09:43 PM I did not purchase the season three set on standard DVD. If they put it out on HD DVD I will pick it up, but after watching it broadcast in high def I don't want to spend money and something that's of lesser quality than what I got off the air in HD for free, lol.

Broadcast HD audience =/= HD DVD and Blu-ray audience.
There are plenty of people with HDTVs that only have an upconverting DVD player (if that.) but not enough HD DVD or Blu-ray players.
Otis Widlflower 09-24-07, 11:21 AM I would buy the Office and My Name Is Earl on HD.
_30 Rock_ FTW.
If only for _Gold Case_.
zero the hero 09-24-07, 12:45 PM In my market (RCN, NE PA), The Office was probably the best looking HD show I have seen. I am waiting for the HD DVDs to buy it.
Jonny_eh 09-24-07, 02:31 PM Another hit Universal show would be House M.D., even though it's shown on Fox. That show would be great on HD DVD. Imagine the stubble!
nugga22 09-24-07, 03:34 PM And I disagree with this. Upconverted by the XA2 I am extremely impressed with the sd dvd on my 110" screen from my RS1.
I completely agree with this. Season 3 looked outstanding with my XA2, one of the better looking SD's I've watched recently.

I agree as well. Out of my Xa2 or ps3 this show looks great for an SD DVD tv show.
But yeah - gimme the HD versions already Universal.
I would buy this in a heart beat, but only if it is in HD.
threefirstnames 10-09-07, 05:05 PM the office is the kind of show that looks very good upconverted because there are hardly any long shots. most of the show is close-ups or fairly tight medium shots, which will have more detail by default. i agree, the season 3 dvd looks pretty good upconverted by my projector, aside from some edge-ringing.
i'm not sure i would consider buying it in HD. it would probably depend on the price.
Brad1963 10-09-07, 05:45 PM Perhaps Uni will release it on HD. The Season 3 sold great its first week on Standard DVD. I believe the first season was only 6 episodes.
BlackMR2 10-09-07, 11:45 PM the office in HD here in Australia looks great too

Would be nice if the WB gave us Supernatural in HD-DVD:mad:

Then we will disagree, it was absolutely soft and really one of the worst DVD upconverts I have seen (Season 3 that is)
The Office HD broadcasts look great, so they would definitely benefit from being released on HD-DVD, but I guess like others have said, still a small market and The Office isn't one to necessarily showcase on HD because it has no special effects.
Dead.Horse 10-10-07, 01:34 PM Then we will disagree, it was absolutely soft and really one of the worst DVD upconverts I have seen (Season 3 that is)
Considering the number of people in here that disagree with that, I'm guessing it's a problem with your system.
bboisvert 10-10-07, 01:42 PM really one of the worst DVD upconverts I have seen (Season 3 that is)
Either you've seen very few DVD upconverts or I have to think something is misconfigured with your system.
It's not HD level or anything, but this is noticable as a solid upconvert. Certainly it's nothing that could be objectively categorized as "one of the worst".
What are you seeing, specifically, for problems when viewing?
looked decent for an sd dvd, but go back and watch an hd episode. freaking blows it out of the water.
been waiting for these in hd for a while now.
It is better but it does not blow it out of the water....I have been enjoying upconverted dvd lately and most media is only slightly better than sd dvd. I have both formats and I am just being real.
