I'm with Time Warner using the Motorola DCT6416 III dual-tuner box. I'm looking for a good DVD Recorder that I can use to record programs I have saved to the DVR. This will also be replacing my current DVD player. I'm looking for the following specs:

- upconversion
- dual-layer recording
- quality software for good recordings and ease-of-use
- tuner isn't an issue as it won't be used to record live TV

I've been looking at the Samsung and Sony units mostly, but would appreciate recommendations.

I would also appreciate feedback on how I expect to set this up. I am going out of the Motorola via component to my receiver -- I would need to go out via S-Video to the DVD Recorder, right? Is there any issue with using 2 separate outs from the Motorola box, or will I have to route the cable signal through the DVD Recorder and then to my receiver?

There should be no problem using two outputs on your Moto box. I use three - HDMI, component, and S-Vid. If I were you, I would get a DVDR with a HDD. That is very helpful for doing transfers. You can set up something to transfer from the Moto to the DVDR when you go to sleep, or when you go to work, edit it a tad later, and burn it to DVD.

I have the same question along with the fact that I need one that "ignores" the copy protection flag.

I have the same question along with the fact that I need one that "ignores" the copy protection flag.No current DVD recorder will do that.

You might wanna try Googling ATX 500, Sima CT-2 or Sima CT-200.

Thanks for the reply. Glad to know that won't be a problem.

Any suggestions on a particular manufacturer or model of DVD recorder, or even what to stay away from?

muzikool, assuming you are in the US, there are only two DVDRs with HDD being sold now. I own neither, but by the discussion here, the best of the two is a Philips 3575 with a 160GB HDD. There are several threads about it here, one VERY long.

Thanks kjbawc, but I'm not convinced that I need a model with an HDD. I understand the benefits, but I'd rather keep the price between $100-$175. Any recommendations in that price range?
