A friend of mine works for a large Multi national Computer company that gets access to all BD software well ahead of the herd. He told me last night he has been watching Independance day on BD and it is just phenomenal.

He said that the new Sony & Fox re-releases were astonishing in fact.

I'll ask him if he can take some screen shots for you all.

That would be cool. I always liked this movie despite some of the corny lines. Will Smith plays it good and the aerial scenes were always a treat. This is one that I'll gladly pick up in BD.

I am looking forward to ID4 on BD. It would have been much more appropriate for it to have a release in late June than the end of the year. Does it have a DTS-HDMA audio track?

Independence Day (along w/ Jurassic Park) - may have been the best sounding laser disc ever produced! The DVD's sound quality, in a direct comparison to the LD, was flat and anemic. And very disappointing. I have high hopes for the BD. Wonder if we're getting the Director's cut? Or both?

Yeah I was really dissapointed when I got Independence Day on DVD.
The scene when the buildings are being hit by the ray and explodes from top to bottom was insane one the Laserdisc. But the DVD hardly gave ANY rumbles to the subwoofer in comparison.
And the DTS version that came later on didnīt really stand a chance either.
I hope the PQ will deliver on BD since the DVD was too soft and dull, even on the so called "Remastered version". '
Remastered, yeah right, it was the same crappy transfer as the old one ;)

No subsequent release ever had the same oomph as the DTS laserdisc. I have high hopes for the Blu-ray. :D

Phantom Menace Japan LD gets my vote as the best sounding, deepest, dyamic, enveloping soundtrack. With John Williams themes as an added bonus.

It breaks subwoofers you know :)

I'd also love to see this title make it to BD. The white-house-exploding scene alone would be worth the cost of the disc :D

Its not the format, but the Movies that matter!!!!

Nice one! this somes up how i feel! However i must admit that i am glad that the contact formats i.e. Tapes are no longer with us (main stream that is.)

D-VHS was great quality though! i saw this in action once on a friends system and was seriously impressed with the picture and sound.

The threads are correct about the sound quality of the DTS and Dolby Digital versions on Laserdisc and i am glad that i own them US and Japanese versions. When comparing them with the DVD special editions ''The DTS version on Laserdisc Rock's, but the DVD is mediocre and not the same slam at all.

I shall be buying into HD DVD and Blu-Ray but will never sell my laserdisc's as i love the Laserdisc artwork, handling and the sound of the Players.

Genuine regards

Mark :):D

Nice to see that there are plenty of laserdisc junkies like myself still out there. I could not agree more that DVD killed the audio so I bought very few of them. the HDM I am jumping on board. This will be a nice test movie. Now if we could just get Lucas to do SW in HDM we could really test it out. I can dream can't I?

Countless films on DVD have sound that sucks compared to their laserdisc counterparts. Many times AC3/DD5.1 tracks are dialed down for DVD for stupid marketing reasons. Many older films are de-hissed and all the depth is removed in the process. There are a variety of rasons why this happens and all of them are retarded.

ID4 is a dumb movie. But it does have two or three magnificent scenes that are worth watching time and time again, so I will buy the BD if it's done right. It certainly commands a BD50 and TrueHD sound at the minimum.

The theatrical cut is actually the director's true cut. The extended versions was just a money grab.

THis is one of the few Will Smith movies that I enjoyed...even with the corny lines.

Actually, I thought he ruined this movie with his non-original corny lines which are as old as Richard Pyror's standup lines. Bill Pullman's tone in his voice was also as annoying. Vivica A. Fox looked very delicious though.

I'm looking forward to getting this. At first I was thinking of only buying new releases on Blu-Ray since I already have this on DVD, but will make exceptions on titles like this one (as well as Titanic and others) which last almost three hours and look horrible on DVD due to compression or that require discs to be changed or flipped.

The President: Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.

Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation.

We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night!

We will not vanish without a fight!

We're going to live on!

We're going to survive!"

Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

This is one of those movies that I can pretty much watch from any point in the film at any given sitting. But, there's this one scene that really bugs the hell outta me, so I'm gonna have to complain about it here (per rule number one of AVS). Okay, y'know that part where they're asking the make-shift team of aviators for their piloting background? And Randy Quaid tells 'em he flew in 'Nam and he's been dusting crops ever since, right? Then he adds that, on a personal note, he can't wait to get up there and get revenge on the aliens for abducting him all those years ago. And then The-Guy-Who's-Not-A-Baldwin and the other military guy look at each other and ROLL THEIR EYES! Hahah. What a loon! Abducted by aliens! Hoho! Who's ever heard of such a thing?! Hahah. 'Cept they're standing there, on the eve of the largest, most massive aerial assault ever coordinated.. AGAINST ALIEN INVADERS! I mean, what the hell? Doesn't that constitute a little bit of a paradigm shift at that point? Doesn't everyone who's ever mocked those people who claim aliens are out there gotta eat crow now? I dunno.. Is this just me?

Or how about the computer virus?

Yeah, I agree that it was dumb. (And seriously, a Mac?!) But, I've come to accept egregious portrayals of physics and technologies in movies. What I can't get on board with is when a movie tells you one thing is true, and then forgets they told you 20 minutes later. For instance, you can't devote five to ten minutes of screen time to a stomping T-Rex creating minor tremors from hundreds of feet away.. And then have him silently show up in a building with nary a 30-foot door to surprise predatory animals with (presumably) heightened senses. Having said that, though, I love Jurassic Park.

Also, I was kidding about the Mac thing, please don't set me aflame.
