I have a strange problem with my new Samsung DVD player. I have it connected to my Samsung HLT-5087S TV via HDMI, and have the audio connected via optical to my receiver. My receiver doesn't have HDMI on it, so I can't do straight HDMI to it. When I play DTS DVD's, I get a message stating HDMI audio not supported, and the DVD will hesitate for a few seconds, and continue to play. It does this every 1-3 minutes. This does not happen with regular Dolby Digital on the same DVD. I can get around this problem by starting the movie in DTS mode with the receiver OFF, and turn it on after the movie starts. I would rather not have to do this. Samsung offered no troubleshooting assistance except to try using bitstream instead of PCM. This didn't help at all. I think it should, because PCM is supposed to be enabled for HDMI audio support. Oh well, what do you guys think?

I searched through some old threads, and found someone that had the same problem with an older model, but there was no resolution listed.

Simple thing to try and do.

Take top off the player and see if you can get to the lens, if its an open top DVD mech you can use your finger to gently slide the pick-up (the assy. with the lens) back along its track so the lens is exposed to where you can easily get to it.

If NOT, take a look at it, they are typically not hard to open if you are comfortable doing it, give it a shot, if not send it off to a service center

Then take a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol clean lens in circular motion, no need to be gentle your not going to break it heh, then turn to other end and clean with dry end.

See if that fixes it, typically any kinda of skipping the pick-up is probably dirty.

I would try that, but I don't think the skipping is being caused by the lense being dirty. It only hesitates when I use DTS audio. It works fine with anything else, so it doesn't have a problem reading the disc.

Yes, but the lens still has to pick-up the audio track...it seems strange but you will surprised how many different problems that I have fixed in players just cause the lens is dirty...

and if that isnt the issue you have a problem in the digital PCB of the unit ... which will run probably more then the unit is worth...if its still under warranty or you have some kind of extended warranty send it in for repair...can do it at any best buy...

Also, I checked the Samsung service website and there is a firmware update for this unit, you can't go directly to the Samsung service site because its just for service techs, but google it you should be able to find it online somewhere.

The player is only 3 days old. That's why I was a little hesitant on opening it up. I'm sending the unit back for a new one. I don't really need it anyway. I got it free with my TV that I just bought. I will probably just get an HDTV player, and it will do the upconversion on the old stuff. I don't need the recording feature. Thank you for all the suggestions.

NP...you will be surprised the amount of stuff that comes accross my bench that was just opened and doesn't work ...surprising really....especially with LG/Zenith its real bad. They also make the best buy's insignia brand which like 80% of the time doesn't work out of the box, it's sad.
