View Full Version : All black room - Has anybody built one?
K. T. Walrus 09-23-07, 02:48 PM I'm struggling with my room decor. I'm no interior designer and I'm afraid I'll end up with a room that doesn't look as good as the one in my head.
I've been told that a black front wall and a black ceiling are best so that you get lost in what is on the screen and don't get distracted by anything else.
I'm wondering if anyone has had the nerve to just go ahead and build an all black room including the walls, ceilings, floors, seating, everything...
This would solve my decorating dilemma in that it would be obvious that I intended that everything in the room is black except for the screen. It sure would make things simple.
If you know of anyone bold enough to go all black, let me know how it turned out. If you have been all black for a while, are you still happy you decided to go that route?
Dean Roddey 09-23-07, 03:06 PM I'd do it. I wouldn't care at all how pretty it was, just about achieving the ultimate performance. You could always maybe to two tone with black walls and ceiling and a dark gray floor to make it a little easier to see where you are going. That wouldn't affect the light level much at all since most of it will be covered by seats and whatnot anyway. Anyway, I say go for it :-)
ChrisWiggles 09-23-07, 03:14 PM Yes it's been done, but it is a pure performance-oriented space. Most people will want a more pleasing environment so they will have some other colors elsewhere. I wouldn't personally advocate an all-black room (or neutral gray) unless you're actually doing work with video in such a space, the comfort of a nicely designed room can still give you excellent performance with flat and darker colors, and will make the room much more enjoyable to be in with friends and the like rather than purely ONLY for watching content and that's it.
usualsuspects 09-23-07, 03:30 PM I went all black, you can see my thoughts here:

William 09-23-07, 07:03 PM I'm building one that will be all black (unless someone can talk me into using another color). Here is my thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=912335) and hopefully you can see it complete in a coupe of weeks.
finishingtouchcu 09-23-07, 10:25 PM I went black with my ceiling and walls, but still gave it color w/trim and decor. I have no windows to contend with so outside light is not an issue.I'm very happy with my picture quality.

Mr. Welsh 09-23-07, 10:29 PM Black isn't going to be much different from any dark color once the lights are dimmed, which is why I would probably go with some different colors just so it doesn't look cheap.
deronmoped 09-24-07, 02:09 AM All black is one thing, but if you want to create a space where the screen seems to float in outer space, you have to go with black velvet everywhere. It's kinda like how they control first reflections in the audio. Just like the reflections coming off of walls can muddy up the audio, reflections coming off the wall with video can do the same. Either making its way back to the screen to wash out the image or to be distracting your attention from the screen. It's the same reason they put a black border around a screen, but in this case the border extends much farther into the room.

deronmoped 09-24-07, 02:16 AM Here is a little experiment you can do, take a flashlight and shine it around your theater with the lights out. Shine the light on some things and it will light up the screen like the 4th of July, you will be surprised on how much light gets back to the screen.

ericeash 09-24-07, 07:54 AM i'll be going all black, but with bright red berklines. the only thing i'm worried about right now is lighting as it's going to be really hard to light it up without a million candlepower in there. but i'm thinking of red accents around the room to match the seating and take a little away from the all black look.
SteveMo 09-24-07, 08:29 AM Anything and everything I could get black in my theater is. It's to dark but the equipment closet addition may help it later on. It is also tricky (dimmers) but I can light the room enough for ppl to see without compromising the High Power screen.
