View Full Version : reccomendations for a dark grey fabric for acoustic panels?
I have fabric swatches of Guilford FR701 in medium grey, Dazian Exposure in charcoal, Guilford Kansas in graphite, and Guilford Anchorage in graphite and none of these are quite the shade of grey I was hoping to find. Guilford Anchorage is the one I'll go with if I don't get any suggestions here but it's a few shades darker than I'd like-- it looks almost black in a dark room. The color I'm looking for is somewhere between the Kansas graphite and the Anchorage graphite. I included FR701 in black in this photo for comparison purposes-- thanks
Kevin_Wadsworth 09-23-07, 06:41 PM I have a bunch of different fabric swatches, and they all look fairly different depending ont he lighting. Most people have low color temperature lighting in their theaters, while your pictures look like they were taken in daylight, so the apparent color may change in a theater.
Aside from that, for grey I like the Anchorage graphite and Fossil (has a brownish tint. Wolf is a lighter grey, much closer to your Dazian charcoal color. Asteroid is also similar, but a bit lighter.

We just started carrying Guilford of Main fabrics (http://www.gikacoustics.com/gom_fabrics.html) , so let me contact my rep and see what they might have. It may be kind of hard to match from the picture online though.

I actually do have a swatch of the Anchorage fossil but I didn't include it in the photo since, as you say, it's more brown than it is grey. Cool color, just not quite the one I'm looking for.
Glenn-- thanks but I don't think there are too many other Guilford of Maine fabrics that are available in dark grey. I just ordered a few more GOM swatches including Belgrade, Regatta, and VS Solids but I don't know how suitable those fabrics are for covering acoustic panels and of course the colors always seem to look very different in person than in the photos on the site. Good to hear that GIK offers GOM fabric now though!
krasmuzik 09-25-07, 08:52 PM Did you try samplecenter.guildfordofmaine.com ?
107hits on grey neutrals, 10hits on blacks
"LilyPad Ink", "SwizzleStick Bitters" is inbetween - but if you filter out patterns - not much choices. "SilkWeave BlueGray" is not patterned but has interesting texture. There are also some without pics - looks like you sent for them. Did you try "Anchorage Asteriod", "Zirconia Smokey Quartz", "Streetwise Pavement", "Pinball Titanium", "Coastline Seal". Those all look to be in the same range.
Also try AcousticalSolutions SoundSuede - they have a lot more of the saturated colors as well as darker ones good for HT. Try this one called "Pewter".

Maybe lighter than you are looking for - but your "Medium Gray" photo looks much lighter than the official photo- so you never know!
Yeah, I've been ordering my swatches from GOM sample center. There are some good colors among the ones you mentioned, but I'm not sure a patterned fabric is what I'm looking for.
It is tough to figure out what the colors really look like from the pictures... GOM generally seems to be a bit better than Dazian in this respect but the FR701 medium grey in particular is nowhere near as dark as it looks in the picture on the site.
Thanks for the suggestions
nowandthen 09-28-07, 09:31 PM The Streetwise line has a fair amount of a sheen to it. I have a sample of number 1894 Pavement, 1886 parking meter, 718 Asphalt among others in that line. I like the Pavement color. All of the Streetwise fabics have a small diamond pattern to them which adds some interest but would not seem to be overwhelming from a distance. The back side of this line has less sheen than than the front and it still looks OK. So if I were to use it I would install it back side out. But I'm still worried about the sheen. If I recall correctly, Art Sonneborn used Asphalt, which is why I ordered a sample. I haven't asked him if he sees the sheen during movies though. I believe the description on GOM's website says it has a metallic fiber (or something like that), thus the sheen.
Have you tried the new fabrics from Fabricmate? They have two new materials. One line is call Audiomesh. I really like the materail. It's different than most materials. There are however, only 8 colors in this line, black, burgundy, red, dark green, a fairly bold blue, a slate blue-gray a dark gray and I think a light gray. I have samples of 7 out of the eight, can't seem the find the 8th, the light gray, thought I had all eight ) The Audiomesh is neat fabric. It is approximately 1/8" thick but it is spongy. It has been tested for audio. Held up to a light you can easily see through it but put it against a light colored wall or yellow OC703 and you cannot see the color of the wall. If light gets behind it you will see through it. I will definitely be using the black as covers over my speakers in my columns as well as other places. I can't say that any of the other colors are quite what I'm looking for though.
I have ordered a lot of samples and have been to a number of fabric stores. But I still haven't found what I'm looking for. I wish I could find a fabric so I could finish my walls. :(
The Fabricmate line you mentioned sounds interesting, although I didn't see it on the website...
I received another batch of GOM samples the other day and the VS Solids in charcoal is actually a pretty good dark grey. It seems to be more acoustically transparent than the Anchorage line, but it's also slightly more expensive. In case it's useful to anyone here I figured I'd take pictures of my new samples-- the Wilshire and Regatta ones I ordered blind since GOM doesn't have pictures of them on their site:
Guilford of Maine has been the go to company for fabric for speaker grilles for a long time. I had a very pleasant suprise when I found an online fabric store through my wife that has an incredible selection of fabric http://www.iluvfabrix.com/products.php that is acoustically transparent enought for speakers. This fabric is also of much higher quality and comes in many more colors and patterns. Give them a try for designer fabric at http://www.iluvfabrix.com
Kevin_Wadsworth 10-05-07, 08:39 AM lannyt - Any chance you happen to work for iluvfabrix.com? It's not a problem - there are many vendors represeneted on this forum - I'm just interested in disclosure.
