I keep getting the 'Disk requires cleaning' error, even if there is no disc inserted!

Anyway, does anyone know what drives are acceptable replacements for my failing Panasonic SW-9574, which is currently in the DVR? I've found Panasonic's new drives the SW-9590 (Tray load and faster) for $30.99 and the SW-9576 (Cartridge load but slower) for $145.

I'm not sure if I should replace it with another Panasonic only to experience the same trouble in 1 year, or even if either of those would work. I think I read somewhere in another post that LG makes a drive that would work, but it was for the XS32 and it was an older post. Anyone have a solid answer? Thanks!

There is a lot of info on replacing the DVD drive in Toshiba units here in the forum. I have not done it with an XS series unit so I'm not a great source of info as far as specific drives to try. I did swap a drive on a DKR2 but that is an older HDD less model. Look to the thread that is for swapping out the burner in an XS32. I believe other models are discussed as well.

The only info I was able to find, and maybe I'm not searching well enough, was from quite awhile back and some of those models are not longer in production. I was hoping to discover a new model that would work.

Thanks for the reply... I'll keep searching:)

That is the part number from the Toshiba service manual for that particular unit...maybe you can call Toshiba and order one directly.

When I called Toshiba, they would only refer me to a local repair shop, since it was out of warrenty. I called the repair shop only to find out they only service Toshiba TV's and could offer no help on the DVR.

Thanks for the part #! I'm just not so sure from everything I've read that I want to put another of the same drive in it.

Because it lists for around $250. And there are after market drives for around $35 that do a fine job.

UED has it for $247.37 here:

https://www.ued.net/ued/addItems.do?itemCode=TSHP000432490

UED sells the Seagate 250GB HDD for $675 which is a bargain because the Parts Store sells the HDD $975 which is more in line with what it would cost from Toshiba.

After market you can pick up the same drive for less than $100.

Going directly to Toshiba for these types of parts is really not the way to go. Especially if there are after market parts freely available.

The XS54 service manual with all parts numbers is here:

designprophets - the XS54 uses the same DVD drive as the XS34. There are those on here that know the DVD drive replacement line up very well. The right LG drive etc. But anything that works well with the XS34 will also play well with the XS54.

Here's a post from the XS32 burner replacement thread:

There are posts in the thread that discuss various XS models.

Here's another post about the XS54 from the thread:

It looks like there are some decent options.

I just put in an order for a Panasonic SW-9590 drive to replace the failing one. I got it for $30 here (http://www.priceguidenetwork.com/computer-component/panasonic-16x-dvdrw-super-multi-drive-sw-9590-black.html). Crossing my fingers that all will work, but if not, I'll have a cool new DVD burner for my Dell...

I'll post back the results incase this helps anyone in the future. Thank you all for your feedback!!
