I've been playing Call of Duty 4 beta and I don't see how any game could be better. I've never played any Halo games before and I'm on the fence about whether to buy Halo 3 or not. How will it compare with COD 4? I don't want to buy Halo 3 now and play it for only a month until COD 4 comes out. Is Halo 3 a different experience than COD 4? Will I like both? Help me decide please...

Yes it is. You could play both and be happy with them. I went from halo 3 to the cod beta last night only problem i had was the controls trying to switch back as i hadn't played the beta in a week but i still did my thing in cod.

cod 4 = realistic shooter with fun and intricate leveling up system

Halo 3 = scifi shooter with fun rock paper scissors like gameplay and fun and intricate map/game editing tool.

both great buys IMO.

I also love COD4 so far. I have never played any of the Halo games but I'll be getting my copy of it this week. I don't really expect to compare them as they are both really different games. I just hope I have atleast half as much fun with Halo 3 as I do playing the COD4 beta.

Totally different style of games. If you like first person shooters then you will like Halo 3 unless something is seriously wrong with you.

Will Halo 3 be similar to Gears of War? I like the graphics on GOW and I played it for a week and lost interest. I wasn't totally into the killing of monsters and aliens and I didn't like the weapons. I'm hoping Halo will be better.

Halo is also very different than Gears. Gears has a much slower, strategic pace about it, using lots of cover..... not to mention its third person. Halo is much faster, run and gun, with much larger environments to look at/play through.

If you like Call of Duty, I dont see how you wouldnt like Halo. Just buy it....there will be so much to do its almost a certainty you'll have fun with some aspect of the game.

WHAT!!! How could you not like the fully automatic chainsaw rifle. One of the coolest guns I have enjoyed using.

This VS thread is pretty useless. They are 2 different games, and different themes so what is the point? Buy both games, and enjoy it, or at least rent Halo if you're not sure.

I love CoD4 though, and I can't wait for the november release. ;)

I couldnt have summed it up better. I actually played both about 2hours each back to back last nite.

I played COD first.. and the gameplay is very realistic. If I'm a sniper I'm laying down in the grass camped out or up in a window far away behind a busy building picking off heads. If its open field I got the biggest gun possible to i can simply lay out a 100 round clip in a group of guys. If its close up combat I got a MP5 and pistol so I move in and out of rooms as quickly as possible and get my shot off first. Most of the maps are somewhat short and for the most part the action always happens in the same places and chances are you going to die from someone walking up behind you and knifing you or shooting you first.. as you get a couple of bullets into him. Also the leveling up system means thats more experienced guys are not just going to know the maps better.. they are going to have MUCH more accurate and damaging weapons.

Halo on the other hand is mostly filled with scientific weapons that have the ability to cancel each other out. If someone has the sword.. give me the shot gun. If someone has a sniper rifle.. give me the rocket launcher.. if someone is driving a warthog.. give me the missle pod. I'm going to put the energy renegerator in my teams base.. and put the energy depleter in the enemys base.. to knock down their shields. I'm going to use the protective bubble to give me a place to recharge my shields in open combat. The alien weapons also have their place. And dual wielding an alien weapon and a human weapon is very effective in close combat. Halo also plays much faster and the fields are much much larger. You may actually need a vehicle to get from one end of the map to the other. Action happens any and everywhere with a 100 different weapons to get killed with. Halo doesnt have a leveling up system.. but experience pays in knowledge of the maps and knowing where weapons are.. and what weapons cancel each other out and what weapons over power others.

I could go on and on about each. But the play so differently.. the mindset for each game is so different its ridiculous. Another I've found is that gameplay in COD4 seems mostly selfish and making sure YOU are right place at the right time.. Where as Halo3 expect guys to more closely together and depend on team environment to get kills. So many times when a Halo match starts.. you will hear someone yell out.. I got the rocket launcher, then another I got the sniper rifle.. then another I got the shotgun!

I think the whole "you can't compare the two games" arguement is a bit overated. It comes down to how much fun do you have when playing the game? Even though two particular games may be totally different, it does not mean that you can't like one better than the other. As I said earlier, as long as I have half fun playing Halo 3 as I do playing COD4, then I'll like it. For example, I like Oblivion better than COD3. Why? Because I had more fun playing Oblivion than I did COD3. COD4 is so far wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than 3 IMO. Its more fast paced, more realistic and for some reason I'm pretty damn good at it (I sucked at COD3).

The whole point is that it is not going to make my day or yours any better or worse if one is better than the other. Bottom line they are both fun and could care less what is is better about 2 completly different FPS games. The fact that 1 games multi goes a different route than the others just makes the purchases of both even better. I don't feel like I am playing the same type of game over and over and the only difference is the title name. The only issue I can consider is which one do I want to have fun with today. That should be the only issue that comes to your purchase. Sounds to me like the original poster is considering his time and money vs just getting both. That I can understand but no need to open a thread for some people that will be quick to say "GAYLO" sucks or some crap like that.

The hardest part like someone said is the controls, nothing like playing a game for a few hours then switching to a different one and you push the wrong button and blow yourself up :p

I agree with the OP for GoW...I never finished the single-player and Ebayed the game and picked up RSV which I liked wayyyy better than GoW. For run-n-gun shooters, I prefer 60fps and GoW felt like a drag.

Anyway, can't wait for Tuesday!!!!!

ok, so far i think COD4 beta is great, i've been in since the first wave and i've been loving it.... BUT, i've been getting a little tired of it, so i went out and bought skate.....

halo 3 beta on the other hand, i played many many hours a day, every day until the beta went away :(

so i think for me, COD4 will be a purchase, but only long after halo wears off on me, which i suspect will be quite a long time.

It's amazing how opinions vary with Gears. I loved the SP campaign but I though the MP was awful. First, no respawns. Second, it seemed like every match I played had the same formula: both teams run to the power weapons, both teams duke it out near the power weapons, whatever team wins that battle and gets the power weapon, pretty much won. In addition, the lack of features in MP (compared to Halo 2, for example) was pitiful.

Hey, to each their own.

I,too, can't wait until midnight.:)

Maybe it's just me but COD4 feels pretty 'run and gun' to me. Nothing like Halo but I see a huge difference between Rainbow Six Vegas (my favorite shooter) and COD4. I would put it like this...

Halo series MP - super fast paced run and gun
COD4 (beta) - Fast paced run and gun with more 'realistic' elements
Vegas - About as realistic as you can get right now

That being said I'll own all three, will play them all for quite a while, and will stink at all 3...lol.
If you can't be good at least have fun..... ;)

territories and terrorist modes get prettyy strategic. DM and TDM are indeed run and gun but it's great that teh game offers both sides of the coin.

I have enjoyed playing cod4 beta, the game is quite fantastic in almost every regard. The only thing I can stomach is the weapon upgrades and the perks. It just makes the incredibly good people even more incredibly good. I am no noob to shooters, and have been holding my own on this game, IMO, but I can see that to many people it would be very difficult to pick it up and run with it.

Welcome to NYC..

It actually sucks a little bit though in that I cant really play the whole game yet. Gameplay is restricted to single player campaign or multiplayer online through private game invite only multiplayer.

1) The multiplayer lobbies are open yet. So you cant play true online multiplayer yet. I'm guessing they will allow it today or definitely tonite at 12 midnite.

2) I dont want to start playing the co-op campaign without my Halo partner in DC.. I played both 1 and 2 campaigns with him last nite. And of course he has gotten his copy yet.

3) I have no interest in playing the single player campaign by myself.

So right now.. I just found another friend who has a copy and we practiced killing each other and using the new weapons in a few Slayer matches.

Since I've yet to play H3, I can only assume that the core gameplay will be nearly identical to H2. If that's the case, then I'd have to agree with everyone else who's said these two games are apples and oranges. Sure, CoD4 has an element of run and gun in multiplayer, but nothing like Halo in my opinion. I'm very much looking forward to getting both games.

Damn...if only my trip to NYC had been this month and not the end of next month! Oh well.

Was all set to pick up a copy on the way to work tomorrow, but the wife's grandfather passed this weekend and the funeral is tomorrow. Probably wouldn't be the best funeral etiquette to break out of the processional and swing by the store on the way to the cemetery, would it? :)

I have never played Halo..but I know I like COD4. I'm gonna pass on Halo for now and just continue to play the beta until cod4 comes out in Nov. Halo may come from santa this year because I've got another game I want next month and I just Hate to buy to many games. I try to keep my library under 10 games...why have more

Cartoonish/bright colored characters in Halo series just don't appeal to me. I like bullet weapons better than laser guns. I am more into strategic and realistic FPS games. Therefore, I like COD 4.

Its funny, I too have never played Halo/Halo 2, but I am getting Halo 3. The amount of people that will be on-line for the next 2-3 years will keep the game interesting and fun. I have been playing the CoD 4 beta, and it seems fun, and again I will get it to play with friends, but I see nothing groundbreaking in this game, in actual fact, it seems no better than Battlefield 2: Modern combat (at least there I can fly the choppers). The graphics may be better, but I need to see more of the gameplay in Cod4. Similarly, the most fun I had playing campaign was co-op on Gears, and Halo 3 coop seems like it will be very fun. I think I will start on legendary for the challenge. If CoD4 has coop as well, it will be a bonus.

beta isnt open to the public yet, you have to have a key to download, and i think they're all gone... there is supposed to be a public beta though, i think.

Well I'll have to say that I still enjoy COD4 way more than Halo 3. There's just something about shooting a real gun and kiling real humans vs. laser guns and robots/monsters. I figure if anything, Halo 3 will be a good filler until COD4 comes out in November.

Nice change from H3 and all the WWII series games. Plus H3 multiplayer games tend to be a pogo jump shoot out half the time. At least in COD4 it's mano y mano. I'll be playing H3 once the beta runs out today but can't wait until November.

I don't know...It is still a toss up. It isn't really fair to compare the COD4 MP beta to a full game. If you compare beta to beta I would say COD4 without a doubt.

The problem lies in the fact that the full version for H3 is out. Which gives it an unfair advantage over COD4. I really liked the SP and I am so loving the full MP and Forge. The player films are hilarious and fun. I am also loving all the custom MP games people are coming up with.

So like I said...It really isn't fair to judge a full game against a beta. COD4 is still pre-ordered and fully paid for and H3 won't change that.
