or realistic? we've all seen the SD package of like armageddon and pearl harbor, with 2 separate disks. is it possible to make an hd combo, with like 40 year old virgin on one side, and knocked up on the other? and if so, would that lower the production costs significantly?

Yes it is possible. But I don't think we'll be seeing this scenario any time soon.

Actually even before TL51 was ok'ed by the DVD forum, HD60 was in and has been in since the beginning but even in the DVD world DL/DL discs tended to only be used on TV shows and barely ever at that.

What if they went back to LD style. Have players that can read both sides of the disc. Although their would only be a few movies if not TV shows that would need this.

I don't think having 2 different movies on the same disc will happen for some time. As they still want to maximize their disc profit. Putting 2 movies on 1 disc woulf bring the price up but would also bring the cost of 2 seperate discs down. So say $40 rather then $25 each..

It was possible to do Double Sided Dual Layer DVDs, too, but they were very expensive.

Most just went with 2 discs. I think just about every double sided disc was 1 layer/side.

They used to do DVD-18s, but then they stopped and just made them 2 dvd-9s. One of them being Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition.

House was a show on three DVD18s for Season 1, then Universal went to 6 DVD9s for Season 2, and I presume season 3.
