View Full Version : Question for HD-DVD owners
Merrick97 09-23-07, 07:11 PM Hello HD-DVD supporters,
Yes, I am known to support bluray (In fact, Im pretty hardcore about it), but I cant deny that I am seriously considering going format neutral, but I have some questions for you guys:
1. Ok, I noticed that amazon is selling the 1080p A20 for $305, but I was curious if I should buy this one or wait for the next gen A30 which will debut at $399? I have no interest in the 1080i models, I have a 1080p TV and my blurays look AMAZING on it. Obviously I would want the same experience for HD-DVD
2. What are the best HD-DVD exclusive titles to start with? Hot Fuzz, Transformers and the Bourne films would all be on my "must buy" list.
Im still going to favor bluray, but I cant deny that there are too many good films I cant get on bluray and may not get for the foreseeable future.
1) Tough choice. Do you already have 300 on BD? If yes consider the A20 at the lower price, if not grab the A30 since 300 and Bourne Identity come bundled with the player.
The A30 can be had for $349 today at http://www.*********************/avstc.htm
2) As for standout titles, take a look at the reviews here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=856119
the A30 is already at bestbuy but many people have said the AX2 is the best player.for the movies hot fuzz, king kong, the matrix, smokin aces, mutiny on the bounty, matador, hulk, the mummy1,2 and scorpion king, the thing, aeon flux, pitch black, chronicles of riddick, constantine, van helsing, last samurai, serenity and many more.

I have 300 on BD. But if it turns out that the A30 is better it will be an obvious choice.
V for Vendetta, Batman Begins, Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, Corpse Bride in no particular order.
If you want to get a player now look online for deals on the XA2. A20 is not worth the extra dough over the A2, and there have been no reviews for the gen 3 players, yet. You can find the XA2 for around $500 online and at Best Buy. If you want the best experience then this is the way to go. If your TV deinterlaces 1080i properly then go with the A2 and save yourself some cash. The A2 can be had all over the net for around $200. That's what I did.
I have 300 on BD. But if it turns out that the A30 is better it will be an obvious choice.
Remember, 300 on HD DVD has exclusive on-line enabled features not available on the Blu-ray. It actually might be worth the double-dip in your case. Especially since it would come bundled with the HD-A30 for free.
V for Vendetta, Batman Begins, Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, Corpse Bride in no particular order.
You must be a big fan of AOD because unlike the others, that disc doesn't have great PQ.
I believe the 5 free movies ends at the end of this month if that plays into your decision at all.
Personally I dont see any difference in the 1080i players specially since most of the 1080p players convert back and forth anyway.
And although I do have my favorite BR titles its hard not to favor HD on neutral releases when theres better menu systems, interactivity, web features and additional content not on the BR release of the same film
As for a list of HD movies, download the release list in my sig
MidnightWatcher 09-23-07, 09:45 PM I believe the 5 free movies ends at the end of this month if that plays into your decision at all.
A new 5 free HD DVDs offer starts on October 1st (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11639456#post11639456). The new offer has different movies.
Also, right now Amazon.com has a deal on the Toshiba HD DVD players where you get to pick two free HD DVD movies right away (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/002-7543485-5912060?ie=UTF8&plgroup=1&docId=1000133851&plpage=1) with the purchase of an HD-A2, HD-A20 or HD-XA2, and still qualify for the 5 free HD DVD movies (original offering (http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/), not the new offering above).
Foxarwing42 09-23-07, 11:02 PM Get the XA2, and a couple of demo movies.
Superman Returns (no TrueHD on Blu-ray version, so I really hope you didn't buy it on the wrong format.)
Batman Begins
Matrix (1,2,3)
King Kong
Hot Fuzz
Hulk
300 (get it anyways for exclusive features.)
Bourne movies
Transformers
heavyharmonies 09-23-07, 11:05 PM Chronicles of Riddick
Serenity
Heroes
Matrix
You will love being format neutral! I went from die hard HD DVD supporter to favoring HD DVD. I enjoyed the more fleshed out complete feel of the product.
I have the old A1 and the add on. And don't plan on replacing the A1 in the near future (can't seem to part with the old Tank). As far as Movies go;
Shaun, Fuzz, The Searchers, Matrix, Heroes, Serenity, Harry Potter (import), Robin Hood (old but great for a 69 yo film) Casablanca, V for vendetta, Black Snake Moan, and Ray to name a few.
Again you will love being neutral and even though you will still favor BD it is nice knowing you can still enjoy movies like The Transformers.
Jay Mammoth 09-24-07, 01:18 AM Clerks 2
Knocked Up
Dawn Of The Dead (If you enjoyed the remake like I did)
Casino
Batman Begins
Shaun Of The Dead
Heroes
UCFKevin 09-24-07, 02:32 AM Go for the A20. It looks glorious on my 1080p TV and hasn't given me a problem ONCE.
pettit03 09-24-07, 02:47 AM Top Gun.
belmonte83 09-24-07, 11:11 AM Planet Earth, HANDS DOWN
Bob Black 09-24-07, 11:55 AM Besides format-neutral titles and the 3 you already mentioned (Hot Fuzz, Transformers, Bourne) I would add these as some of my favorites:
Dawn Of the Dead
Shaun Of the Dead
John Carpenter's The Thing
Apollo 13
Serenity
The Big Lebowski
Breach
Casino
Children Of Men
The Deer Hunter
The Frighteners
The Good Shepherd
Heroes: Season 1
King Kong
Liar, Liar
Lucky # Slevin
Lost In Translation
The Mummy
Ray
Scent Of A Woman
The Sting
If you want to add current Warner HD DVD exclusives:

Thiers also a lot you can import on top of that as HD-DVD is region free. Get Harry potter before the US. GOF has been out in the UK for like a year now. Its great.
Some on the list are paramount. So you can still find them at some places but its becomming hardder and harder as they sell out.
eapleitez 09-24-07, 03:45 PM Don't exclude the A2/A3 from consideration. 1080i fro a 1080p source fed into a 1080p set will be 1080p.
HPforMe 09-24-07, 03:56 PM If your set has a good deinterlacer and you don't need analogs then go for the very affordable A2.
If you want it all the XA2 is the way to go.
Merrick97 09-24-07, 05:11 PM Makes you feel dirty, doesn't it? There are times I considered posting the same type of post in the Blu-ray forum.
A little dirty. Im honestly a little torn, because I find it very hard to believe that HD-DVD will win this war and Im afraid that I will end up wasting my money, but Im also open to the possibility that HD-DVD can win and I want to experience every movie.
Either way Merrick97, if BR wins, you still have your movies and player. The same goes the other way. There are still people using LD and how long has it been considered a dead format? Just because a format is considered dead does not mean you have to completely trash it. Heck people still have VHS.

Yeah, Ive always felt that if HD-DVD (or bluray fails) Ill at least have a piece of history. My best friends dad has an old betamax player that he keeps for that purpose. Although, I dont know if he actually watches movies on it.
I think HDM is different. As their is already a lot of movies out their the last few atempts at HD media some what failed have less the 100 movies (D-VHS, WVHS, MUSE laserdisc).
Both formats have the same size disc meaning playerd can be made that play both you doid not have this with vhs-beta.

It's ok, we won't judge you here.
Well... I have a PS3 on a 61" 1080p Samsung DLP and to be honest, my 1080i Toshiba A2 looks just as amazing. Honestly, after seeing the two in action on the same TV, I'm convinced the whole 1080i/1080p thing is just marketing bullocks.
If your TV is half decent, I doubt you could tell the difference.

+1
With my 1080p front projector and 110" screen I also can not see the difference.
And considering there is the resolution of the picture between the two is exactly the same, we shouldnt be able to notice any visible diffference
Hello HD-DVD supporters,
Yes, I am known to support bluray (In fact, Im pretty hardcore about it), but I cant deny that I am seriously considering going format neutral, but I have some questions for you guys:
1. Ok, I noticed that amazon is selling the 1080p A20 for $305, but I was curious if I should buy this one or wait for the next gen A30 which will debut at $399? I have no interest in the 1080i models, I have a 1080p TV and my blurays look AMAZING on it. Obviously I would want the same experience for HD-DVDThe street price on the A30 will be pretty close to the A20 - not $399. It's shipping now for $349 from some vendors, so there is no wait at all.
I guess it's you choice as to whether you want to spend the extra $40 or so. Personally, I think they are both great, so the A20 might be a good bargain.
2. What are the best HD-DVD exclusive titles to start with? Hot Fuzz, Transformers and the Bourne films would all be on my "must buy" list.I've posted a few must-have titles here - http://www.campaignhd.com/Must_Haves.html
There's a list of great flicks that also happen to have class-leading PQ and Audio.
Im still going to favor bluray, but I cant deny that there are too many good films I cant get on bluray and may not get for the foreseeable future.
alfbinet 09-24-07, 09:09 PM I believe folks here on the HD DVD forums are a bit more forgiving for someone going neutral. Do the research for titles. I would recommend "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and Casablanca. I am an old geezer so take it as you will. I also have been mighty impressed with "Heroes" from NBC and I am not a fan of episodic TV shows. Seabiscuit is a great film as well to push your display. Not only a great transfer but a great story as well.

Minimum investment IN HD-DVD is the A2....try it. I project my A2 on a 9' wide screen and the PQ is breathtaking. Buy it and save money for software. You can always take it back if you don't like it.
