Hi.
I've been lurking around these threads and trying to do some research on the best player for my needs and based on what I am seeing OPPO is the brand that I need to consider. I view standard DVD's 99.9 percent of the time and am getting a Panny AX100u PJ which is 720p. I have a Denon 3805 AVR which does not accept HDMI. I am assuming that I can go straight from the player to the PJ with the video HDMI and from the player to the AVR with the audio using digital.
This being the case I am assuming that I won't be able to see the on screen commands from the AVR on screen but that should be OK once I set up the AVR? Is this a good assumption?
Also, which Oppo would be the best choice for this set up?

If you are not going to playing SACD/DVD-A, then I would recommend the DV-981HD over the DV-980H. If you are like me and SACD/DVD-A is more important than DVD-V, then I would reverse the order. Both players are good budget universal players with strong points.

Thanks for the info. This will be mostly for DVD videos so it sounds like the 981 would be the best chioce. Does anyone know about my other question regarding the HDMI only outputs of the Oppo? Since my AVR doesn't have HDMI can I run the HDMI cable to the PJ & an digital coax to the AVR and that would work OK? If so, the only negative with that set up would be that I could not see the AVR commands on screen. Is this correct?

You can run HDMI just for video and coaxial or optical to a receiver for audio - in fact, that's probably the most common arrangement since HDMI is still a relative newcomer to surround receivers. The only caveat that I'll add is that DVD-Audio and SACD will of course need to be run via multichannel analog, if you have any discs of either format.
