View Full Version : Does Projector Location Cause Visual Distortion?

Guys,

Below is a layout of my family room that I'm working to configure for daytime sports and night time cinema. I want to use a DaLite HP screen which means I need to use my coffee table or my end table. My coffee table is a tad too close at 11' for the projectors I have in mind. So here's the question. Will placing the projector on the end table (as shown) introduce any visual distortion? If so, are there adjustments that can be made to compensate? What about hot spotting? Is an angle like this likely to reveal an issue regarding brightness since the projector is not "dead on" and the screen material I'm contemplating is DaLite High Power?

Thanks!

right now i have a 106" hi power with almost the same set up you have there, i have a Sanyo Z3 pretty much to the extreme left, i am using almost all of the lens shift, i really dont notice any visual distortion other than most of the seating area does not get the full gain from the high power, only the seating near the projector, but even off the hi gain sweet spot it still looks good, and this is with a low lumen old projector. My room is too shallow otherwise i would have the pj infront of the screen! The Hi Power screens rule though- Oh I will say i had Da Lite and Carada send me a sample of all their screen materials, the HP was definitely the brightest but also did not have any issues with sparkles like i saw on their video spectra and no visible texture like some of those optoma grey wolf screens....i would go ahead an request some free samples, best way to get an idea

i'd seriously look into ceiling mounting the projector.

depending on the projector, most do not have a significant amount of horizontal lens
shift available. looking at your diagram, looks like you'd need ~ 50% horizontal shift.
that's really tough to do w/o introducing significant cornerstoning.

the dalite HP still has a significant amount of gain when the projector is ceiling mounted.
