I know this sounds stupid (there are other ways to do it) but how much loss in picture quality would there be if I were to record to the HDD and then move it to a RAM disc and then back to HDD for edit and then to a DVD-R ?
This on an EH-75 in LP.
And is the quality as good as they say in LP for the Panasonic? For old Black and White movies?
Thank You

None. And my guess is that the LP mode will perform very well for black and white source content. Your expectations will be the best judge.

It may be worth noting that the "none," refering to loss, is true only if all transfers are done at high speed, not in real time.

That's a good point. Real time transfer will introduce some loss. Setting up HS copy is on page 75 of the EH75 manual.

The question begs...why would you need to do all that? Unless you're moving stuff off the drive to reformat?

I probably don't need to do it, but just in case !
I am going to fill the HDD this next weekend (100 hours of Gene Autry) and I thought I might move the content off the HDD and edit it when I have time.
And when I get my media (or machine) problem figured out that is on another post.
Thanks for the quick responses.

That makes perfect sense. To offload content from the HDD for future HS dubbing back to the HDD. This should work great with Panasonic and DVD Ram.

As an aside, one of the reasons I landed on the Toshiba XS series as my recorder of choice is that you have the option to HS dub back to the HDD a finalized Video Mode DVD-R. Not very common in DVD recorders. You can even HS dub back to the HDD at the chapter level from a finalized Video Mode DVD-R.

So although DVD Ram is an option with the XS series a finalized DVD burned by the machine can be HS dubbed back to the HDD lossless(VR or Video Mode - finalized or unfinalized).

My Pio 640 won't let me dub a Video Mode DVD back to the HDD for editing, so I do the same thing all the time, with VR mode -RW discs instead of DVD Ram. There are some things I want to save, and eventually, when everything is collected, put in proper order, and burn to Video Mode -Rs. Saving the material on the -RWs saves HDD space, and reduces fragmenting. Some compilations of shorts I make, that I am burning to -R, I also burn to -RW, so I can do further editing later, should I chose to.

On-touch copying will do that, altho it's a real-time copy.

OKay, I should have been more specific, I meant high-speed, lossless copy back to the HDD for editing. I can also make bit-for-bit HS copies, rec. to the HDD, then burn back to disc, called "Disc backup," but with no editing.
