A rather interesting piece on HD for things that were never meant for HD.

If it's cheesy in SD, of course it's going to be cheesy in HD. Has nothing to do with being old, it was just half-assed to begin with.

LOL, I can't wait to get it on HD DVD and watch it in all its cheesey glory.

I have to agree that Star Trek(TOS) in HD shows all the lame effects and poor makeup. But, at least the few episodes I've seen, look simply amazing in HD. I really didn't think television shows that aged could look so crisp and clear. Anyone know if they used high quality film for the series or was it just restored very well?

Whatever the case, I still can't believe how good it looks. This was OTA by the way, not d/l.

Edit: found some info, its remastered. Heres the article about the restoration and channels the series in HD will appear. Give it a look if your interested.

So the guy is basically whining about being able to see how cheap the effects were. You don't need HD to see that, its quite apparent in SD too. Heaven forbid, we should see Spock's complexion as it was meant to be. Now might be a good time to tell the author about the Easter Bunny, if he can handle another childhood memory being exposed.

Yeah, I have found that there are LOTS of shows and even movies that havent aged well at all or dont look very good in HD. Older TV shows are going to be the biggest culprit...they were shot in 1:33 aspect ratio so right off the bat they are doomed.

Oh well.....

here's a video so you can judge for yourself

Having seen some of this on a big screen HDTV already, my take was the opposite. Yeah, the special effects and makeup look a bit chessy in the first person action sets, but you just kinda look past them once you start watching.

The experience of watching the restored version's new colors and overall cleaned up filmstock make this a treat for real Star Trek lovers. Its just freakin cool to see TOS on a big screen looking sharp and detailed.

Ya , the TV makeup and special effects don't stand up to the scrutiny in some of the alien makeup , but my take is that I'm actually pretty impresssed with the ingenuity that the set designers and costume and makeup people had with the time constraints an budget they had.

The starship interiors and bridge actually came off IMHO better than I expected.

If you look at it more as a stage play and don't unrealistically expect state of the art effects, its great.

And it is cool to see a Gorn blink.

No, please tell what happens when you 'let' gamers into high tech. What are gamers anyway, low tech?

People buy HDM for stuff like Casino Royale and 300. I don't exactly see Casablanca or The Adventures of Robin Hood blowing up the sales charts. You can't possibly think there's any sort of viable market for HD versions of older full-frame TV shows/movies.

We have a handful of "old" titles. I wouldn't call that an indicator of anything. Plus the biggest films of the pre Cinemascope time period have yet to be released:

King Kong
The Wizard Of Oz
Citizen Kane
Gone With The Wind

Just to mention a few.

Old shows can look great in HD if done right. Sure some of the really low budget stuff will look bad. But I think a lot will still look good. Come on I know we all want to see a flying pancake attack spock in HD. Or tribbles in HD oh yeah

I'm more concerned if there are tv-shows in the 80s/90s that may just have been 'taped' in standard def, rather than the older shows where they always had to use film. I'm not sure how widespread that was?
