View Full Version : Any Plasma users have a good look at the Sammy xx71 LCDs?
I've been researching TVs for what seems like forever. I became very interested in plasma technology, specifically I was almost ready to purchase either the Samsung 5084 or the Panasonic 50PX700 (or 50PZ77)
I do intend to hook my set up to a laptop for occasional browsing, playing music etc. And I also do play my share of Xbox 360, so IR does play a concern.
Never the less I really do like the PQ of plasmas for movies/SD viewing. I was wondering if anyone who was also interested in plasmas could comment on what they thought of the new Samsung LNT 4671 series, with improved contrast ratio and motion blur control.
I am looking at this TV as a plasma alternative for the time being.
Many thanks

Totalimmortal 09-24-07, 11:38 AM Seen it. Honest opinion, it's a good display. Really is. But, as soon as you get off angle it shows it's limits. Contrast changes drastically in darks scenes as you move off axis.
Also, maybe it's just me, but motion blur is defiantly far from gone on this display. It just manifests itself differently. Showing up as what appears to be vapor trails almost, hard to explain in words. It appears around the edges of moving objects. In all fairness, this effect wasn't present while watching a BluRay disc.
It's a good display, but a Plasma killer it isn't. In that price range why not consider a Pioneer 5080??
tomanystraydogs 09-24-07, 12:31 PM Best lcd I have ever seen.
However that was in a bright store, wonder how it does in the dark.
I can get a 54 series Sammy plasma for half the price.
scottanthony 09-24-07, 01:24 PM Very nice lcd...along with the XBR4. But motion blur is still there. I don't know whether blur can actually be eliminated on lcd. I got the Sammy 5084 instead for a much much better price. Lcd also still looks to 'digital' for my tastes.

I've seen the 5084 and do really like it. I am a little concerned though with the number of comments regarding IR. The ONLY reason I am even considering the 71 series LCD is to eliminate this need to be "super careful" regarding static images.
I am sure I would be as careful as your average joe, but that probably also means IR issues.
chrisherbert 09-24-07, 02:49 PM I didn't think the motion blur was bad at all, but the 120hz interpolation was absolutely intolerable when I saw it at Sears. That can be turned down or even off, but I guess you might have more motion blur issues. I just wouldn't be able to watch it with the interpolation on. Otherwise the PQ was fantastic, and any picture changes from off-axis viewing were pretty subtle.
Totalimmortal 09-24-07, 03:06 PM Your "average joe" won't experiance IR problems with current generation plasma sets.
DPowers 09-24-07, 03:13 PM I saw a 71 with the 120 HZ on the highest setting. It was playing a BD demo. It was unwatchable. I then read you aren't supposed to have it on while watching BDs. Problem is, the setting isn't a "per input" setting.
Since it is meant primarily for sports, depending on what you are watching, you would have to go fairly deep into the settings everytime you wanted to switch it on or off. If you are watching Heros:off, Football:on, back to 24:off...sounds like a pain in the butt to me.
redlikefire02 09-24-07, 05:20 PM go with the samsung(s). 360 will do nice if you have an HD cable preferrably HDMI or DVI to HDMI .. my elite looks hella sick on my 4065 but i will not lie regular xbox was looking like butthole with regular a/v connections

The component cables can make Xbox 1 look pretty good. Some games, like the Dead or Alive 3 and Ultimate, don't really look much worse than Dead or Alive 4.
nicknomo 09-25-07, 11:52 AM I've seen the samsung 71 xbr4 directly next to the panasonics you mention.. There is no comparison, the panasonics look like absolute crap next to them. The blacks are worse, the whites are horrible as usual... the LCDs win hands down.
Motion blur still is a small concern, but its obviously on the better end. Most of the time, you will not notice it IMO.
You don't really appreciate how good the new samsung 71 and sony xbr4s are until you see them next to the kuros, and panasonic plasmas. I spent a long time in the store playing with the picture. Blacks aren't as good on the LCDs compared to the Kuro, but are noticeably ahead of the panasonics...
The biggest difference in PQ has to do with the comparably muddy picture on the plasmas whenever there is any light colored or white material. The plasmas look dirty. I could see why someone would go for a kuro though.. the dark areas are pitch black, no washout (unlike the pannys). The drawback is that the picture is a bit dimmer than the sammy 71 LCD (even with the LCD's picture and backlight scaled down). The color was also a tad more saturated on both plasmas. Looking at the 6010 in a different location (not side by side) it seemed to fair a little bit better than the 5080 though. I didnt get to see the elites...
