View Full Version : LG recall
SlapnutsGT 09-24-07, 10:47 AM Do Not Sell LG DVD-Rs
The LG DR787T (SKU 8251517) and RC797T (SKU 8251535) DVD recorders need to be pulled from shelves ASAP – an Action Center task has been assigned to store Inventory teams, but all employees should make sure this product is removed from shelves and not sold. Stores should move the units to the warehouse, mark that they’re not to be sold, and then send them all to the PRC. Why are they being pulled? These models don’t include program blocking (the V-Chip), which is required under regulations interpreted by the FCC. As a further stop-gap, the retail price on these will be increased to $999 to help deter selling these units. More details will be communicated as soon as they are available, so watch Employee Toolkit and The Retail Insider for updates.
This is straight out of a newsletter for bestbuy employees...if you see one BUY if you can....HUGE mistake on LG's part here
ACPewty 09-24-07, 04:46 PM ...if you see one BUY if you can....HUGE mistake on LG's part hereFYI just in case you were thinking the V-Chip has something to do with copy protection/DRM, I don't believe it does. AFIAK the V-Chip is strictly for parental control or in-home censorship to block channels/programs from innocent eyes, so unless you are 5 years old and hoping to pull a fast one on your parents, I wouldn't run out to stock up on LG DVDRs. ;)
beekeeper 09-25-07, 06:34 AM Sounds like a troll post. Be nice to see something to back it up, but doubt if we will. Google does not have anything about a recall.

Nothing I can really link, info comes from the best buy intranet which isn't open to public, and I am a best buy employee at a service center and this came directly from our retail insider we get every month...and from what the supervisors in the shop are telling us this chip is for copy right protection...but you could be right and maybe they are mis-informed on this end...sounds more like a parental control now that you mention it...
And not trolling, just thought I'd share some inside info I came across

Yep, you are right, v-chip is parental control, guess this info was useless hah
rgazzara 09-25-07, 07:48 AM That's OK. Just keep bringing us your insider information.
Thanks.
texasbudman 09-25-07, 12:42 PM Last week my boss told me to find a DVD/VCR comb fast to rush an order for the office... so I went with the research I had already had done and noticed that CC (no one actually) had them listed any longer... I thought that was strange...
However, so what happens to us that have them???? I know you said that the pulled them from the store... but what about the ones that are in homes??? Nothing or will I be getting a call??
I couldn't care less about the vchip... but can I get a newer version or money??hahahah I guess that would be nice...
But seriously what happens...
Its amasing how un knowledgeable Best Buy is about any of this stuff....
texasbudman 09-25-07, 03:24 PM I just ck'ed LG's homepage... there is no mention of the recall and its still posted for sale...
SlapnutsGT 09-25-07, 03:56 PM Go to any best buy store and tell them to price check those 2 SKUS, you will see they are marked up to $999.98 to prevent people from buying them, its apparent that LG is trying to keep this quiet (my guess) because of the FCC violation.
texasbudman 09-25-07, 04:22 PM I just moved to the US Virgin Islands... we don't have stuff like Best Buy, CC, Wal-Mart, etc... I guess its the trade off... but like I said I did talk to CC last week and there off the on-line computers, I called... I'm real interested in what will happen to those of us who already have them... Like I said I don't care about the chip...
Thanks for the info... keep me posted if you will....
SlapnutsGT 10-09-07, 04:47 PM Sorry to bump old thread but thought Id post an update on this ... weekly retail insider this week 09OCT07 stated that this unit is hitting shelves again on 21st OCT with the V-chip inside.
DeeKaye07 10-09-07, 06:59 PM Actually I'm glad this got bumped up again, because as an owner of one of these machines, I was wondering what was up...whether the recall was due to mechanical issues, or something else. I really couldn't care less if it's missing a v-chip, since I don't use that feature anyway, so if that's all that was wrong then it's not a big deal. ;) (I did wonder if it was something technical though...I'd only had mine 3 months when it had to be sent back to get its drive replaced because it died on me.)
Of note, if you go to Best Buy's web site, the LG recorders are strangely absent. (Or this was the case a couple of days ago.) I do wish BB had handled it differently...why they couldn't just be honest about the situation, and say there was a problem with the machines so they wouldn't be for sale TEMPORARILY (instead of trying to hide them in the back room or warehouse or hiking up the price like that), is beyond me. I'd prefer honesty, TYVM. Handing it the way they supposedly did seems just stupid, IMO...

Yeah and not only did they remove it, some stores just kinda well I guess you can say dont pay attention to these retail insiders, when they should all be reading them, and stores were still selling them so they had to do a system wide update to raise the price of them to $999.98 to stop customers from buying them. But, yeah it is kinda dumb how they handled it ... this weeks insider even made a note that it WASN't technically a recall ... best buy didn't want to sell it without the chip I guess ... who knows I work for them and can't ever figure out what the hell they are thinking in corporate have the time
texasbudman 10-10-07, 09:58 AM Dee,
I'm with you... I had wanted to buy one for my office to archive some old VHS stuff... and CC acted like someone's identity had been erased... hiding from the FCC I guess...
Slap,
Thanks for the update...
My mommy lets me watch whatever I want, but if you hear what they are gonna do about us that already have them, let me know... thanks...

Not sure about customer stand point ... we just dealt with the store stock ... if you really want the V-Chip I'd say call LG customer service I'm sure you can work out an exchange through them.
texasbudman 10-10-07, 04:54 PM Slap, I was kidding... I don't have kids... I don't really care... just curious...

BTW I couldn't care less about having V-chip functionality...no kids, no worries. :)
Would have been nice if they'd let folks know though. I know I registered my product when I bought it, but never heard a thing from them about all this. I read about it HERE, though. Good thing I visit often!
