View Full Version : So what is next for BD?

Simple question for everyone. I would like to jump into neutral waters with a PS3 and wanted thoughts from everyone as to what they think is next?

I see Amazon's deal is up for the 2 free BD movies on the 30th of this month and I believe the 5 free offer of BD's is also scheduled until the 30th. Then what?

I am not going for price reductions ( though that is always welcome ) more looking extras for the price. I would be willing to pay the regular price for the PS3, but to be honest there isn't 1 movie on the rebate that I would want.

So, in your opinion, do they just extend the offer or do they change up the selection as HD DVD did?

Does Sony themselves start putting out offers on their BD's and accessories with the PS3's at retailers?

What do you think happens after 9/30/07? If it is something good, this would be an easier sell to the misses.

So what is next for BD?

Maybe a profile 1.1/2.0 compliant player?:o

The PS3 he's looking at should take care of this. Not that this in any way answers the question he asked...

It's likely that the free movie offer will continue on both sides well into Q1/08. They aren't getting the sales yet and they know this seems to be working to increase purchases. They will likely revise the titles and/or quantity but the free movies will continue.

Next, if you buy a PS3 you'll likely get a XBOX 360 included in the box. :) Kidding.

PS3 will release their $399 version to try to counter the Halo3 movement which likely wont have much effect because the 360 would likely move to the $299-$349 mark in response. (You can already get a standard 360 for $299 without HD).

The 360 doesn't really need to do much to counter the PS3 because of the gaming titles and the Halo3 launch. I'm sure it's on many a Christmas list this year. Those that don't already own a PS3 aren't very likely to rush out and purchase one when faced with the 360 vs. PS3 option. It's a no brainer.

And the xbox & Halo 3 competes along side the PS3 as Blu-ray players how?

eghill1125: try asking your question instead in the Blu-ray software forum, should avoid much of the standard off-topic banter.

@eghill1125

Get yourself original PS3 60. Best what you can get so far. Amazon still have some in stack i hope. Or use Best Buy 10-12% off coupon for PS3 and get extra “Planet Earth” as a free extra. If you don’t like “free BD” offered selections.

Can you name at least 10 original Xbox 360 titles which not PS2 ports and not available on PC? I mean real games, not this beautiful katamari crap. Games you and me will really like/play.

BTW. Halo was given 2/10 score by Japanese gaming magazine.

The OP was mentioning purchasing a PS3 for BD movies and was interested about promotions. The only one in the wind is the $399 package rumor.

I was mearly pointing that out and stating that because of the Halo3 launch, PS3 will likely put forth that $399 PS3 and continue to keep giving away movies with the player -- as a last ditch effort against losing the console wars completly. :)

So in simple terms, yes, there are lots of freebees and incentives instore for the PS3 thanks to the Halo3 launch. That's how they are connected.

Yes, true. PS3 already outsold Xbox (by timeframe). If they continue to "losing the console wars" for other 6-8 months… not to many will even remember what actually xbox was look like. White…plastic.. ala dreamcast :-) (sorry, can't resist)

Well, Disney's Magical Blu-Ray Tour(touring malls nation wide) is spreading the word for Blu-ray as the one and only HiDef format to purchase.

I read through their little brochure and it mentioned HD DVD like twice.
All the info in the brochure, charts/graphs, made it look like Blu-ray is already the chosen HiDef format.

If I didn't know any better, I would have thought that Disney was Blu-ray with all the promotions and demo's they had running.

If you were J6P and seen this, you might be pursuaded to go Blu-ray over HD DVD even without looking into HD DVD. Although the price of the player costs more than HD DVD, Blu-ray has the top tier recognized brand names selling their players and after you buy the player, the movie prices are the same between both formats.

Disney’s Magical Blu-Ray Tour, sponsored by Panasonic, provides local shoppers at at selected malls a first hands on experience of Blu-ray technology. The interactive exhibit is designed to educate consumers about the features and benefits of Blu-ray high-definition home entertainment technology.

The Magical Blu-ray Tour consists of several interactive stations that allow consumers to experience the picture perfect audio and video quality of high-definition Blu-ray technology and other special features such as integrated menus, personal scene selections, title specific games and high-definition bonus materials. Consumers will also get first-hand experience playing the interactive “Liar’s Dice” game from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and preview upcoming Blu-ray disc titles, Disney/Pixar’s Cars and Disney’s Meet the Robinsons. A highlight of the tour is a special mini-theater hosting hourly live presentations on Blu-ray technology and high-definition.

The Blu-ray Disc format is currently the leading high-definition packaged media supported by the foremost entertainment companies in film, music, gaming and computer industries. Blu-ray discs deliver a truly unique high-definition viewing experience that showcases picture quality at six times the resolution of standard DVDs and theater quality uncompressed audio in addition to enhanced menus, games and high-definition bonus materials. Disney’s Magical Blu-ray Tour is devoted to providing clarity to the growing number of consumers confused by high-definition home entertainment technology.

I think the BD magical mystery tour actually helps HD DVD as much as it helps Blu-ray. People see hi-def, sometimes for the first time. They decide they must have that hi-def technology and go to buy it. Then they are hit with the price tag.

"Don't you have something cheaper?', they ask.

"The only thing cheaper is to get HD DVD", says the salesman.

"What's that?"

"It's another hi-def player, like Blu-ray, but half the cost."

"Well that sounds more like it, give me one of those HD DVD players then."

Pure fantasy.

"what's is HD DVD?"

"It's like Blu-ray but a player with similar capabilities is a little cheaper...and the movies cost the same but are less popular and less numerous, the CE and computer hardware companies are largely ingnoring it, and it is well behind in overall sales."

Well, capacity and bandwidth difference between BD and HD-DVD almost the same as between DVD and HD-DVD. Conclusion… DVD is the same as HD-DVD just a little cheaper

If you're going to keep repeating that HD DVD is a "peace of crap", at least learn that it's spelled PIECE, not PEACE. Don't they teach you that in 3rd grade anymore?
