View Full Version : Anyone using the new Oppo HDMI switch? BillKen 09-24-07, 03:50 PM Considering the new Oppo HDMI switch and wondered if anyone has tried one yet? http://www.oppodigital.com/hm31/default.asp eugovector 09-24-07, 05:16 PM If you need all the features it offers, it sure looks like a good deal, and oppo has great customer support, so I wouldn't hesitate. However, if you don't need all the features, monoprice has your switch. kaitokid83 09-24-07, 11:13 PM I just got this HDMI switcher today and it's working great. I use Monoprice 5x1 which have problem with my AE900U projector and VIP-622 receiver. This HM-31 HDMI Switcher by Oppo solves my problem. Good buy for such a such reasonable price. Gillest 09-25-07, 02:07 PM Does it automatically switch to the active input according to the port priorities of the switch as advertised? This is what the user manual states: "The HDMI INPUT ports 1, 2 and 3 are prioritized, with port 1 having the highest priority and port 3 the lowest. When the HM-31 HDMI Switch senses a new input signal on a port with higher priority than the currently selected port, it automatically switches to the high priority port. When input signal ceases on the currently selected port, the HM-31 HDMI Switch automatically switches to the port with next priority and active signal. This priority makes it possible to automatically select input without touching the remote control or front panel. Simply turn on the desired source device and the HM-31 HDMI Switch will automatically select the correct HDMI INPUT port" Squuiid 09-28-07, 01:20 PM Just purchased one from Amazon. Will let you know how I get on. I have a PS3, Samsung HD Tuner (DTB-H260F) and an nVidia 8800GTX on my PC, all going to a Mitsubishi HD1000U. Fingers crossed! bt12483 10-02-07, 02:03 PM I was originally going to purchase an A/V receiver that had a minimum of 4 HDMI I/P's, but now in view of this switch I may wait a little. Instead of spending $1000+ for a 4 HDMI I/P receiver, I can buy a 2 HDMI I/P receiver for less than MSRP (namely the Onkyo 605) and buy this switch for the MSRP of $99, and have the same HDMI (i.e. 4 I/P's) connectivity for ~$400 less. Heck, you could even buy two of these switches and have 6 HDMI I/P's (using two switches connected to a 2 HDMI I/P receiver) and have more connectivity than most receivers on the market (except for the 5300 Sony) for a significantly lower price. Sure you may loose out on some of the other features that the $1000+ receivers have (namely networking, USB port, video upscaling, etc.), but I don't think many of them warrant the additional $400. I planned on passing all of my HDMI signals untouched through the receiver anyway. For those who have recently bought the switch, please post any findings that you come across during use (as well as what equipment is connected through it). I will be connecting a PS3 and DirecTV H20 via HDMI (with possible XBox 360 via HDMI in the future). If the switch works as advertised I may be ordering one soon. Squuiid 10-02-07, 02:53 PM Still waiting for mine I'm afraid. Amazon have them on back-order. Will let you know. Anyone else with any feedback for us? I've been testing it extensively through an Onkyo 605, also using a PS3, HD-A1 and HR20, all feeding a JVC RS1 projector. I've had absolutely no problems with it. Having direct IR control and also RS-232 is a big plus. I've used the Monoprice 5X1 in the past without a problem, but the Oppo switcher is a hgiher quality unit IMO. As it uses an Silicon Image chipset, it's a great deal for the price. Should be getting them in stock tomorrow. SASmith 10-03-07, 06:01 PM I don't mean to hijack this thread, I'm just wondering how important HDCP compliant is in an HDMI switch? Thanks eugovector 10-03-07, 07:02 PM I don't mean to hijack this thread, I'm just wondering how important HDCP compliant is in an HDMI switch? Thanks If you want to watch protected content, very. Some switches don't say "compliant" but they are. In theory, all good switches should just connect the pins of one cable to another and allow the handshake, though you may have to turn off one device and then turn it back on. DTrain 10-03-07, 09:03 PM This switch looks just like what I need. One question I have is how is the speed when changing HDMI sources? For example, using no switch, I currently change inputs using my URC from HDMI 1 to HDMI 3 and there is about a 5 second "lag" before the HDMI 3 picture appears. Does using one of these switches lengthen or lessen this time? Jeffhdz 10-06-07, 03:31 AM The switch responds to remote control commands very quickly. It will not lengthen the HDMI handshaking time. On the other hand it cannot speed up the handshake either. Smarty-pants 10-06-07, 06:58 PM Ok, now I'm torn on which switch to get. I'm not sure if I may be buying a new HDMI receiver in the near future, but if not then I'll need a new switcher to replace the old manual 2/1 that I have now. So who wants to be a guinee pig for this one... http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=3728&seq=1&format=2 jhe 10-12-07, 09:57 AM I have the 5-1 Monoprice switch and the Oppo 3-1 switch. Both are working for me. Oppo is probably the best but one of it's features is a bit annoying and that is the flashing blue led when there is no signal. Monoprice has caused some combos of my equipment to fail with inputs 1-3 but 4 and 5 have always worked so far. Feeding my Onkyo receiver all 5 inputs work. So the problem of the cascaded chip delay seems to vary with what you plug into. I find the delays on switching channels very annoying, but this seems to be a problem with HDMI in general and both these switches do it. It is variable and at first I thought the Monprice was better but I have seen delays as long as 7 seconds with both and as short as 1 second! Squuiid 10-15-07, 05:09 PM Wow, Amazon is taking it's sweet time delivering this to me, where did you all buy this from? It still says Nov 14th for delivery! Smarty-pants 10-15-07, 05:51 PM The best place to buy any Oppo product (IMHO) is direct from Oppo. It's always worth it to me to maybe pay a few more dollars in shipping costs, and get it in a few days, rather than wait for who knows how long while the product is backordered at Amazon or wherever. Squuiid 10-16-07, 11:34 AM Cancelled the order on Amazon and did just that. Thanks for the advice! Squuiid 10-24-07, 01:51 PM It arrived and it is awesome. Works beautifully. Jeffhdz 10-27-07, 02:50 AM Amazon finally got it in stock. Mescalito 11-07-07, 06:01 PM Bought mine direct from Oppo. I'm in SoCal. Ordered Tuesday afternoon, got here today. Up and running perfectly. So easy to use the wife already has it figured out. Using it with my Fujitsu P50/40, D*TV HR20, and Toshiba A3 HD-DVD. Definitely a good buy if you need it. tdavis21484 11-10-07, 09:07 AM I don't mean to hijack this thread, I'm just wondering how important HDCP compliant is in an HDMI switch? Thanks It is essential, if you want it to work. Scoot2300 11-13-07, 01:06 PM I was reading about the switches. At what point does a switch become a good idea? I will completing my HT in less than a month and did not buy a switch. I have the AX-200, Onkyo HT-800, HD-A2, Comcast DVR box and Wii. I have purchased all of the necessary cables but am not clear to the advantage of a switch. Thanks for your replies and patience.:) ccotenj 11-13-07, 01:53 PM I was reading about the switches. Smarty-pants 11-13-07, 01:55 PM nX2??? ccotenj 11-13-07, 01:59 PM where "n" is any number of inputs... i.e. 4X2 or 6X2... sorry, should have been clearer there... |
