View Full Version : What if there was a huge promotion with Transformers? like- $100 off an hddvd player
iansilv 09-24-07, 04:55 PM I was thinking about this- does anyone think it is possible that there might be some mega-promotion where there is a huge coupon off of the price of an hd dvd player with the purchase of Transformers? Think about it- players are out or are almost out at the 299 and 199 price point- what if people could pick up a player at $99 with the purchase of transformers? I think it woudl be a good idea... thoughts anyone?
dalamchops 09-24-07, 05:08 PM yea, if toshiba wants to go bankrupt.
Digital Man5 09-24-07, 05:11 PM The next promotion ought to be something *realistic*, like maybe packing in Transformers and 300, or something like that.
Transformers will already sell like hotcakes. Also, IMO the Toshiba HD-A2 is already a steal. If more consumers don't dive into HD DVD this fall then they simply don't care about movies in HD. That may seem a bit harsh but let's get serious here, last I checked the HD-A2 was only $238 at Amazon. If they aren't biting now I doubt a $199 price is going to make a lot of difference.

I agree the A2 is 233.88 at amazon with 2 free movies from them and the old 5 free by mail. 228.28 if you qualify for the 10% for movies and select 2 combos.
But if a local store sell this at $199 with choose 2 free movies and 5 by mail I think will sell much better than online. Still many people prefer local than online.

Good point. The A2 is more likely to sell more if it's on the shelves for $199 then only available online for that price. Most people prefer to see exactly what they're buying in person. Makes sense.
the biggest promo should be to lower the damne price on software.br movies are really cheaper.what are they thinking?200 hd player(great)now go for the software 19$.I went to walmart today, blu ray movies were 19$.the difference was very big betwen both.
Favelle 09-24-07, 08:09 PM I was thinking about this the other day actually (sad, I know.....;)). I figure that at least 60-70% of HD DVD owners will be picking up this title. Couple that with people buying HD DVD players JUST FOR THIS TITLE......
That's going to end up being a LOT of copies. I mean, a LO of copies. It will be interesting to watch how it sells
Helvetian 09-24-07, 08:21 PM When MSRP hits $199, then it takes off. Amazon would probably sell them at $139 and BB/CC at $169. Eliminate the five free and just lower the cost of the hardware altogether. I find the rebate tedious, especially the extended wait.
BuGsArEtAsTy 09-24-07, 08:34 PM What if?
I'd definitely buy an A3 if Toshiba sent a gnome in the box who cooked all my breakfasts for me and ironed my socks.
Hell, I'd even pay full MSRP.

What if the A3 came with some more of those really tasty bugs I hear so many good things about?
best thing they could do is knock the hd dvd add on to $130 and include king kong and Transformers.
Actually what they should have done from the start is include an hd dvd in the halo 3 packages .
Make a hd dvd disc with exclusive content all in 1080p . They would have pushed 3m or so hd dvd discs to halo fans. Most likely 1.5-2m of them being extremely hardcore who would drop cash on a hd dvd add on.
Add in a transformers pack in to the hd dvd add on (and have the pack in come with it early) and forget it. I think that would easily push 400k units of the add on

Wow! Good idea, man!:D
iansilv 09-28-07, 03:06 AM yeah- that is a good idea!
munkyxtc 09-28-07, 08:04 AM Toshiba needs a display in BB that has a HD DVD Player and 7 of the top selling freebie movies piled up in front of a HDTV that is playing transformers or something else that really showcases the format that says "You get all this for $XX.XX", then have another that says if you already own an HDTV get it for $199.99. I'd think that at a $1000 price point if they could work something out with an HDTV Supplier they could really move some units. Or give them 37", 42", 50", 62" options and let them decide...basically you'll end up getting the player for free or something
JaylisJayP 09-28-07, 10:27 AM i think the suggestion is backward....if anything they'd bundle the movie free with the player at it's retail price.

Not sure how that would bankrupt them. After all their sales are abysmal right? whats the most it could cost them 10, 20k?
iceperson 09-28-07, 10:46 AM I'd pull the trigger today if they'd just give me a voucher for 5 movies of my choice instead of the crap they have to choose from now. Heck, the titles for the new promotion are even worse!

Freebies are always sketchy, they tend to be the lower selling range of things; I don't know that I'd let this hold me back. Heck it's 5 free movies and looking at the list I was able to make 2 distinct groups of movies I would pick given the opportunity.
I guess to each his own though and hopefully there will be a promo going into the holiday that you'll find worthwhile.
Why not a special "transformers" edition HD DVD player? something with the autobot/decepticon symbol in place of the Toshiba markings.
And maybe a special edition HD DVD only (non combo) of the movie packed in.
How kick ass would that be!?

The thing is there are very few titles I want on HD-DVD (none of which are on the list of freebies.) In my opinion offering to give someone 5 things they don't want is not much different than offering nothing at all...

Kind of like posting on a thread that really doesn't matter to you?
...offering nothing at all I mean.

What combo? It's supposed to be two HD-30s.
