View Full Version : SuperCube I or Sunfire Signature EQ subwoofer for HT?

Now that I am possibly looking at replacing my NHT LCR setup with the Def. Tech. BP7002 and C/L/R 2500 center (though it remains to be seen if I will prefer the Def. Techs.), because of money and space limitations, I am looking at a "small" sub to augment the low frequenices for movies. If I like the 7002's for music, I am guessing I won't need a separate sub for anything but HT. I don't listen to much music that has any real deep stuff like Pipe organs, etc.

So I am looking at small subs I can put near the listening position. About as big as I want to get is the 14" cubed SuperCube I, and the smaller the better. So with that said disregarding price, would the SuperCube or the Sunfire Signature EQ sub give me the most bass output down low? I would likely be using it to augment the built in subs of the 7002's for everything 60Hz and below for LFE in movies.

I know the Sunfire has pretty decent output at 20Hz (per the review on Secrets), what about the SuperCube I? I'm talking "real world" output not what the specs. say. After all if the Trinity as tested by craigsub, did not have much output below 20Hz, I don't expect the SuperCube I to be any better in that regard. I know neither the Supercube I or Sunfire will give much if any substantial output below that, but I'm just looking for the most output and as low as possible?

For reference, here is a quote regarding SPl of the Sunfire from Secrets:

"Maximum output, using a combination of 20 Hz, 31.5 Hz, and 50 Hz, was 110 dB. Putting the subwoofer in a corner would add a few more dB, bringing it in right about at the manufacturer specification of 116 dB.

At 20 Hz, and 100 dB SPL, THD+N was less than 8%. This is great performance from such a small box."

P.S. If anyone knows where I can get a good deal here in CA. on either, please shoot me a PM.

Any input would be appreciated.

I would go with the Sunfire. I have 2 sunfire subs now that have been great. I blew one and sent it in for repair once, when I got it back they had sent me a brand new sub (upgraded to the eq). I have never Had a super cube 1 in my house but I have had the s/c 3 and the reference. I would say the Sunfire and the s/c 3 were pretty close but I would give the lower DBs to the Sunfire. You can get some really good deals on Sunfire subs at audiogon if you don't mind buying used.

speeeedy,

Thanks for the feedback. Isn't the s/c 3 the smallest of the s/c line? I had it once (about four years ago) and I remember running some test tones through it, and it basically had no output below 25Hz at all (couldn't hear anything no matter how loud I turned it up). However, above 25Hz it was really good, with a LOT of output. It only has 7.5" drivers too (active and PR's), compared to the 12" ones of the Sunfire Sig. EQ. With the sunfire putting out around 100dB at 20Hz, I do think that is the way to go. That is unless someone can point me to some "real world" proof that the s/c I has similar output down low.

Btw, that is very cool that sunfire sent back a brand new sub upgraded to the EQ.

Any other comments out there?

You are right, it was a s/c 1. Not sure what I was thinking. Th other nice thing is with the s/f is it has a balanced input, so if you are going to use them on long runs it might be wise. The s/f eq also has a detachable power cord if you decide you wanted to upgrade you can.

Yeah, that is what I thought. Do you know if there is much difference between the EQ and the non-EQ version of the Sunfire signature?

The supercube 1 may be the finest sub ever made. Period!

That is saying quite a bit, about any sub much less a $1200 one. Were you being sarcastic?

I have a Sunfire TrueSub, and find it pretty good for movies, as long as you arent' expecting miracles (overpriced for the performace vs. larger subs, though). I don't use it for two channel music; I'm not sure it's as suited for that (my Revel F30's go down to the 30's; which is plenty for the type of music I listen to).

Hi everybody, i subscribe this thread, cause i have the same question, but with the Def Tech Supercube Reference in place of the SupercubeI...

So, between the Sunfire True EQ Signature and the SuperCube Reference, which should be the winner?

Thanks for answering, i need an help...

P.S.: for the look, finish, options, connections and features in general (it hs also an EQ system, to have an equalization to start with) i'll go with the Sunfire, but for that big 14" woofer and the better reviews found online, i'd prefer the DefTech Reference...I don't know, but i feel like the Reference have a better performance (maybe for that 14"...)

Thanks Hal. I'm just going to use the Sig. EQ for movies. I just bought one new for way below MRSP. Ebay auction of a new one from HiFi Trader. :)

I think I will be a happy camper. Also to the last poster, given the Trinity really did not have much below 20Hz (per craigsubs review on this forum), I'm guessing neither will the s/c Reference. However, above 20Hz it may have more SPL than the Sunfire Sig. EQ I don't know.
