View Full Version : Is Die Hard 2 worth buying?
tlreddragon 09-24-07, 10:19 PM If not I'll just stick with the original and Live Free even though I haven't seen it yet. I really have no desire to own Vengeance but if I'm going to be getting Die Hard 2 I might as well get the whole set and save a few dollars. What do you guys think? Worth a blind buy?
tauheel05 09-24-07, 10:24 PM i think Die Hard 2 is great. The snowmobile chase/fight is awesome.
sixfootse7en 09-24-07, 10:35 PM Just get the whole set. :)
Azzkker 09-24-07, 10:38 PM i love all the die hard's, even 2. i say get the set! one question, not trying to stir the pot buy any means, but why do you not like with a vengeance? i thought this was one of the best die hard movies. like i said, not trying to stir the pot, but was just curious to your reasoning.
thanks

lockheede 09-24-07, 10:38 PM After I saw LFODH, I went home and watched DH2 for the first time in years. It was pretty enjoyable, but I couldn't help but think there was a lot of similar moments from DH1 in it. Don't get me wrong, I did like it, but if it hadn't been a Die Hard sequel, it might have been entirely forgettable.
hamsterxcore 09-24-07, 11:31 PM I'd say its actually my least favorite. This whole box set thing has gotten me so confused as to what I want to be honest. I'm pretty sure I want the first and and live free, but seeing as how the middle two didn't really impress me all that much, I don't know. And then you get into the issue that live free is the PG-13 version, and I'm not even sure I want that anymore if theres an unrated cut. If Fox didn't grossly overprice their releases, I'd have no problem buying the box set.

I don't think Vengeance is particularly bad or anything just really average and plus I've already seen it twice. I was happy when they broke up the set and offered each movie individually but now I'm thinking of just getting them all since the set is a much better deal than just getting 3 out of 4. I guess what I want to know is whether or not I can watch Die Hard 2 more than once since I already won't be watching Vengeance.
kucharsk 09-25-07, 02:08 AM I think 1 and 2 are great but hate 3.
nickoakdl 09-25-07, 02:22 AM I would say that Die Hard 2 is the weakest of the franchise. That doesn't make it a bad movie though, because they are all good.
theforce8686 09-25-07, 02:25 AM The first and fourth movie are 10's. The third is a 9.5. And the 2nd movie is a 9. I'd say get the box set.
1 & 2 are awesome, 3 is OK and I haven't seen 4. But, I would get the BOX set.
lgans316 09-25-07, 04:29 AM I liked Die Hard 3.0 and 4.0.
jdawg131 09-25-07, 10:43 AM I like 2 more than Vengeance myself; Vengeance was by far my least favorite of the original trilogy. I'm going to be picking up the entire box set, even though I haven't seen 4 yet. The first three are good enough to pay a little extra.
I think Die Hard 2 is the second best in the series, and very close to the first (which is simply one of the best movies of all times IMO). Part 3 and 4 are just average at best..
thewretched22 09-25-07, 12:10 PM Die Hard 2 is the worst in the series, but I'm just buying the collection cause i pretty much get it for free anyways.
Part 2 is the only Die Hard sequel worthy of the Die Hard title.
3 and 4 are lame compared to 1 and 2.
Part 2 is actually my favorite of the series.
Pens1566 09-25-07, 12:19 PM 2 is better than 3. If there's one I won't get, it's 3.
I think 2 was way better than 4. I almost turned 4 off after John drives the truck into the elevator shaft.
I think 2 was way better than 4. I almost turned 4 off after John drives the truck into the elevator shaft.
How did you almost turn it off????
B Leisle 09-25-07, 01:51 PM Haven't seen the most recent film, but IMO, 1 was by far the best of the first 3. The original will be the only one I buy.
While 2 is the worst of them all, I still like it.
jkcheng122 09-25-07, 02:02 PM would have bought the box set if 4 wasn't in pg13 form. since it is, there're 2 out of the 4 in box not worth the money to own. i will buy 1 and 3 only, collection be damned when they screw up the 4th one with a pg-13 only release.
Die Hard is the only truly superior movie of the four made. After that, it goes downhill fast. The second has a couple decent parts - and you may not see some of the twists coming. I'd get it, it's probably a 5-6/10. The third also scores similarly, though you really do start feeling you've gone this way before... another 5-6/10.
The fourth movie is execrable. Simply awful. Nonsensical proof that talented writing left Hollywood LONG ago...

Mongoos150 09-25-07, 09:50 PM I and III are great, but II is... OK at best. Rent it first.
rover2002 09-25-07, 11:15 PM 1,3,4 its that simple (4 was actully pretty dam good as it goes).
kucharsk 09-26-07, 02:23 AM i love all the die hard's, even 2. i say get the set! one question, not trying to stir the pot buy any means, but why do you not like with a vengeance? i thought this was one of the best die hard movies. like i said, not trying to stir the pot, but was just curious to your reasoning.
I've mentioned it before.
Aside from not feeling like a DH movie at all - it destroyed the very concept at the root of the first two films: McClane is put into an impossible situation not to be a hero, but in order to save his wife.
In DH3 all of a sudden he's back in New York and his wife's suddenly a inconsolable bi**h. It's just an action movie with McClane fit in. If Willis wasn't available I could have easily seen Schwarzenegger or Stallone in the role.
At least in DH4, we had McClane's daughter in danger, bringing the rationale back around from 1 and 2.
Seriously, I saw 3 in the theater and on TV a few times and have no desire to have to sit through it ever again. It didn't suck per se, I just didn't like it at all.
MovieSwede 09-26-07, 02:34 AM The first one is a really good action artwork.
Its an fantastic platform for an actionadventure, it has great characters, great plot (for action) Bruce Willis is really made for that movie. The directing is fantastic and the soundtrack is perfect.
The only minus in the movie, is that the SWAT team acts so stupid. They dont feel like real SWAT officers, more like B-actors pretending to be SWAT. (It got even worse in die hard 2)
wormraper 09-26-07, 03:15 AM I thought 2 was a good movie. In order it is 1,3,2,4. 1 was amazing, 3 was pretty damn cool. 2 was fun, not as good as 1 or 3 but still very fun in it's own right. 4 was the the biggest pile of excrement that I had ever seen. Seriously, McClane wasn't a cop, he was straight out of a superhero movie, invincible powers and all.
jorgerod 09-26-07, 04:43 PM I consider DH2 leagues better than DH3
Jorge
2 might be my favorite. I think I like the airport setting better than the office building of DH 1. 3 was OK, but I got rid of the DVD and just kept the first 2. Haven't seen the latest yet.
DH2 is probably the weaker of the Die Hard quadrilogy.
But it's still better than half the crap Hollywood is putting out today...with the exception of Bourne Ultimatum.
rutlian 09-26-07, 05:03 PM I have the DH 1,2 and 3 in superbits I will keep it that way but definitely will buy the hd for the 4th movie. But not the set.
Ron_Mexico81 09-26-07, 05:04 PM I didn't really like Die Hard 2, but each time I keep watching it, it gets better.
Jeff Lampert 09-26-07, 05:06 PM DH1 was simply a great flick. The characterizations (Alan Rickman was just superior), the cop that was on the ground helping out, etc. The rest are whatever.

Come on, you're telling me you didn't like Sam Jackson in DH3 and the "Apple Guy" in DH4? You must be kidding...;)
narcopolo 09-27-07, 12:05 AM Wasn't Die Hard 2 the movie with the low-on-fuel plane circling the airport, then crashing but somehow exploding as if it had been refueled on the way down?
MovieSwede 09-27-07, 02:42 AM Wasn't Die Hard 2 the movie with the low-on-fuel plane circling the airport, then crashing but somehow exploding as if it had been refueled on the way down?would never
Yep, hollywood would never let reality stop them from putting in another one of thoose fireball explosions.
The explosion in Die hard 3 on the other hand is really wellmade.
Well it's all subjective. Generally DH3 is considered a good sequal and DH2 a poor one. I go along with that but DH2 was way better than DH4 which wasn't even like a DH film to me. I can't put my finger on it, it just didn't feel the same.
dan0368 09-27-07, 07:25 AM I just watched all three die hards for the first time this past summer (I saw the 4th in theaters too). I loved the first movie, hated the second, loved the third and the fourth was good.

DM2006RI 09-27-07, 09:57 AM Looks like there's a lot of revisionist history going on in terms of what is "considered" the "weakest" of the series.
If you look at the reviews for these installments DIE HARD 2 actually received some of the best of all four films -- Gene Siskel even placed it #6 on his list of the Best Films of 1990! The film was unanimously popular and got good reviews across the board when it opened. Adjusted for inflation it also made the most money of the entire series as well.
IMO it's right up there with the first movie. Leaner, faster paced, great action set pieces, while retaining the formula of the original.
For me DIE HARD SUCKS WITH A VENGEANCE is easily the weakest of the entire series, with its lame action sequences, forced "interplay" with Samuel L. Jackson, obvious North Carolina location work...and the ending is so godawful I can't imagine why anyone thinks it's a better film than any of the other three. But to each his own, obviously :) It also received the worst reviews of the whole series (I'm going on print reviews, not internet message board voting) too.
Personal preference speaking here, I'd go with 1 and 2 head and shoulders above the others, though LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD was at least a substantial improvement on the third movie.
MovieSwede 09-27-07, 01:49 PM As time goes by Nr2 has slipped down.
You cant judge how well people thought when it just came out. Sequels can get a very nice boost when they are new.
Same with Lethal weapon, as time goes by the better ranking the first movie get.
kucharsk 09-27-07, 07:39 PM I think most people agree that the original is the best of the series, but I really think 2 carries on the most from the original film where 3 is essentially its own film with few if any ties to the original aside from the fact it features McClane.
That's actually one of the things I like about 4; McClane's daughter plus many of the music cues actually tie it more closely to the original in a way more akin to 2 than 3.
ChrisW6ATV 09-27-07, 11:25 PM Is Die Hard 2 worth buying?
Yes.
I have not yet seen the latest one, but all three of the older ones are good "blow-it-up-REAL-good" action movies. The first one is probably one of the all-time best in this genre.
jasonstiller 09-28-07, 03:33 AM They all rocked and Im a big fan of the whole series but never saw the last one. My order is
1,3,2 and I havent seen the last one.

Yes agree that the second is close to the first, maybe a little to close. Other then that its an OK actionflick that you still get enjoyment from watching.
(-the stupid SWAT team cliché, 45 second handgrenades)

3 and 4 are lame compared to 1 and 2.

I agree with Gruson, 2 is my favorite of the series. It's just a damned fun Die Hard movie.
ablegoy 09-28-07, 09:59 AM While die hard 1 is the best of the bunch I think part 2 is pretty great too.
With a vengeance is cool right up until the end, the ending is absolutely lame. Also Die hard 3 is only available in a censored version. Some versions are REALLY cut to ****, but even the R-rated version has some clumsy edits in the chain-whipping sequence. And censorship is baaaaaaaaaaad!
Anyone compared the unrated die hard 4 (on DVD) to the pg-13 version yet? What are the differences?
Marlowe13 09-28-07, 06:53 PM Well, opinions are obviously subjective, but I have an increasingly high opinion of Die Hard 2. I was disappointed when I first saw it in the theater, but repeated viewings have changed my mind (Am I the only one who watches DH 1 and 2 every Christmas week, along with It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol?). DH 3 is OK, but IMO only the first two movies are real DH movies, since 3 and 4 (which I have not yet seen) violate the two basic rules for a DH movie: it must be set during Christmas and Bonnie Bedelia must be in peril. Since I consider DH 1 and 2 on Blu-Ray to be must buys, and I do want to see 4, I'll probably buy the box.
Megalith 09-28-07, 10:18 PM Die Hard 3 is the worst of the series.
How can anyone hate Die Hard 2 when he escapes grenades by ejecting out of a plane, and blows one up at the end with a lighter.
MovieSwede 09-29-07, 02:46 AM Die Hard 3 is the worst of the series.
How can anyone hate Die Hard 2 when he escapes grenades by ejecting out of a plane, and blows one up at the end with a lighter.
Because the grenades have 45 seconds delay...
I dont hate DH2, I enjoy it, but it has some flaws.
giantchicken 09-29-07, 03:17 AM I consider 2 to be the most underrated and 4 to be the most overrated.

I'm a stickler for Movie flaws too, but really like DH2. DH3 not so much.
I'll take a 45 second grenade delay over a Huge Bus jumping over an open span of Bridge anyday!!!

I haven't seen 4 yet, but my sense is that I would agree with the above.
I thought 1 was great, 2 was a good action flick with a Die Hard meets the Airport movies premise, and I wanted to leave the theatre in 3 and have no desire to see it again (it was about as memorable as Jurasic Park 3, Batman Forever etc.). The previews for 4 made it look cartoonish, but it can't be as bad as 3 (can it?).
BTW, I have to disagree with MovieSwede regarding Lethal Weapon. The series has descending quality with each sequal, but the descent is not linear. 2 is almost as good as 1 (how can you not love "Dip-lo-matic im-munity"?). 3 is a bigger step down, though still fun, while 4 was just silly.
MovieSwede 10-03-07, 02:35 PM How can you say that you are disagreeing?
Thats the same felling I have about the movies. I was refering to that when a sequel comes out in the theater many thinks its better, because its new. But as times goes by everything evens out
Remember when ID4 came out in the theaters. Everybody of my friends said it was better then StarWars. I just said, lets se if you say so when it hits video.
TrevorS 10-03-07, 02:50 PM If not I'll just stick with the original and Live Free even though I haven't seen it yet. I expect to skip both the second and third sequels on HD, though I easily prefer the third to the second. The original is mandatory, and I understand the new one is good as well -- however, if we'll have to wait for the unrated version on BD, I may well do that -- these FOX titles aren't cheap :(!
tlreddragon 10-03-07, 03:54 PM So after hearing all the comments on DH2 I've decided to spring for the box set! However, as you all know, Q4 is going to be very expensive for dual-format owners so I've been forced to cancel my Spider-man trilogy preorder to accommodate the Die Hard movies. Call me crazy but I never really liked any of the Spider-man movies and there are just too many other box sets coming out that I would rather have like Ocean's and the Jack Ryan collection. Thanks for all the input guys!
jkcheng122 10-03-07, 03:59 PM DH2 isn't bad enough to skip out on the set, but DH4 being pg13 is. currently i'm leaning toward buying 1 and 3 separately, but at the prices being charged for fox titles i may skip the entire set.

I was never that thrilled with Spiderman either. I've got the Superbit versions of the first two and I've no interest in the third, so I think that'll hold me. Still have to see what I think of Oceans13, but I know Oceans12 didn't work for me (liked Oceans11 very much:)).
I've a similar problem with the Jack Ryan Collection, I love the first two, have little interest in the third, and hate Aflec in the fourth. Still, I've the JRCollection on order with FYE, but I'll likely do just the first chapters of the DieHard and Oceans box sets.
Geoff D 10-03-07, 06:33 PM I love Die Hard 2. The original is The Best Action Movie Ever and is also my favourite film of all time, but #2 is a wonderfully goofy action flick that still hits those Die Hard beats (decent characterisation, impossible escapes, ultra-violence, Holly in peril, set at Chrimbo etc). I just don't understand why it doesn't get shown the love these days.
Sure, I like DHWAV too, but I went through a period of not liking it because it feels more like a generic buddy flick - ditto for numero quattro. But there's enough of McClane's gruff attitude and mindless action to carry me through the last two movies, and I sincerely hope that Fox have done a brand-new transfer for DHWAV. I also hope that they've burnt every extant master of DHWAV because they've never been able to make that flick look even half-decent. Fingers crossed for the BD...
crunchyfrogs 03-11-11, 09:11 PM Yes I realise this thread is as old as the hills but I ran 2 searches and this is the closest thread I could find.
The whole set on Blu-ray is 25.99 shipped free on Amazon right now...
dvdmike007 03-12-11, 01:50 PM 4 is the most badly edited sloppy mess of a multi-million dollar movie, I love 3 as much as the first and 2 ranks second for me.
I love the 3rd as it was the first I saw in the cinema I guess and it has a place in my heart
I was 16 when Die Hard 2 came out....I loved it, and for some weird reason, it's the film of all the die hards I remember the most. Of course the first one is awesome, but I found #2 to equally entertaining and more memorable; the whole XMAS thing and the planes and the snowmobiles. It IS kinda funny now that when McClain mentions the fax machine and the whole technology in the '90ies'......lol
Geoff D 03-14-11, 11:23 AM "As far as I'm concerned progress peaked with frozen pizza". Wise words, Mr McClane.
U P KI A MOTHA ........the PG13 rating made the last film a total waste of my time, plus other totally unrealistic scenes like the jet and the truck, bla bla bla. I'll take #3 over #4 ANY DAY OF THE WEEK....
david118383 03-14-11, 05:51 PM How is the quality of the blu-ray of Die Hard 2? I've heard it described as somewhere between VHS and DVD quality :(
dvdmike007 03-14-11, 06:47 PM How is the quality of the blu-ray of Die Hard 2? I've heard it described as somewhere between VHS and DVD quality :(
Not in any way at all, it looks like all 90's action movies a little soft and muted and shot on 90's stock
