Meijer, a roughly 200 store chain of superstores, recently relaunched their website, Meijer.com. Before they didn't have online purchasing. In stores, they have a basic electronics and movies assortment, similar to a Wal-Mart or Target.
Well, Meijer's site has one major glaring flaw...
THEY ONLY OFFER BLU-RAY MOVIES!
They sell HD DVD players, and Toshiba TVs, but no HD DVD software is to be found.
I think we should make them aware that HD DVD should be offered alongside Blu-ray both on their site and in their stores. I sent them this email about their choice:
Hello,
First, let me thank you for the GREAT deal you offered this week, with 20% off $50 or more purchases on the website. Awesome sale!
I'm writing with a suggestion/complaint on a different topic, however. I notice that you only have Blu-ray Disc movies listed on your website, and no offerings from HD DVD. What gives?
HD DVD, the competing high definition format, has more titles available (300 vs. about 270 for Blu-ray) according to Engadget.com, a leading technology blog.
Plus, there are two Major studios (Universal and Paramount) that don't even release on Blu-ray, and are exclusive to HD DVD! Warner, who despite having a policy of releasing movies on both HD formats, has about 30 movies they've released only on HD DVD, including Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, and The Matrix Trilogy.
Are you planning on depriving your customers of major HD DVD exclusive releases like Transformers (Paramount) and The Bourne Ultimatum (Universal)? The comedy blockbuster "Knocked Up" is also an HD DVD exclusive film. Top Gun is being re-released in HD very soon, and is HD DVD exclusive.
I feel it is unwise of any retailer to "pick a side" in this way, especially with so much exclusive content on both sides - you're simply depriving customers of the full HD experience if you don't offer both formats. This is especially true, since I notice you carry Toshiba's HD DVD players on your site, but no software to play on them - those sales will logically go to another retailer.
I thought you should be aware there are around half a million HD DVD player owners out there who are looking for places to buy HD DVD movies, and you are missing out on that business by exclusively supporting Blu-ray software.
Thank you for your time.
EDIT: I initially said "Superbad" was an HD DVD exclusive - it's not. I edited that in this post to avoid problems. The mail actually sent to Meijer is corrected, and did not include the reference to Superbad. [/edit]
Email Meijer through their "Contact Us" link and let them know your opinions! But keep it clean and rational - no flamefests. The goal should be to inform them that they are depriving their customers of many movies exclusive to the HD DVD format, and may be alienating HD DVD owners from shopping in their stores at all.
You'll catch more flies with sugar than vinegar!
