Title says it all. Just an FYI. I suspect this is in response to some of the newer lower priced offerings from some other competitors.

Jason. Are they price protecting dealer's stock?

They are Mark. I was just at one of my local dealers and they told me they cut the price of their HD1s and that they expected the price to drop on the HD100's <$8k before release.

Maybe I speak too soon. I assumed they had HD1s in inventory, but they may not have. So I dont know about price protecion.

guess i trade hardware a lot faster than I thought others do.
you're spending $350 every 2-2.5 years with 3 hours a day on it..do you put more htan 3 hours a day on your PJ? That's saying it lasts only 2000 hours. 3000 hours would give you 3 years at 3 hours a day. $120 a year, $10 a month.

You OK with not having the latest technology after 3 years? Think before you answer. What TV set did you have 3 years ago? =P

Technology changes fast, I suggest not visiting AVS if you think you can hold onto your RS1 for 6 years.

I'm glad to see the price drop even though it will lower the resale of my RS1. My only hope is that the RS3 or what ever it will be called continues the trend of excellence. Of course who knows how far this tech can go, not I. The RS2 looks to be another huge leap in contrast level.

Mark I think price protection is probably on a case by case basis. If a dealer has them in stock for over 30 days, I would suspect they will not get protected. More recent orders should be though.

does that mean the group buy was lower or highter. ;)

How often do these group buys occur? I am currently in the market for a new pj and would love to get in on one.

Based on the old MSRP and the last actual selling price it should be lower now if the MSRP discount is coming off the selling price?

I don't know why buying a projector has to be such a mystery as to price,
is the manufacturers goal to allow vendors to sell at the highest price you can to unknowing buyers?

I know AVS does not set the rules,
but its too bad AVS just cant have a web site similar to BH has with cameras.

BH has the best prices in general, accurate stock counts, and ships quickly.
They seem to have an exception to the web pricing rules.

If only buying a projector was as easy :)

What might be very attractive for all concerned would be another AVS group buy on the RS1.

As long as you either get in early, or the manufacturer/distributor doesnt make you wait for 4 months after release to get what you are buying (wanting to buy.) 8)

Presumably, in the case of another RS1 group buy, the waiting period for the consumer would be only for as long as it takes the vendors (AVS+JVC) to meet their desired number=pirce criteria.

Generally speaking, the higher the number of units in an order, the lower the price for each unit, but in this particular case, I would guess that the number of units required to receive the best price would actually be quite small. If that is true, then the consumer's wait for receipt would likely be short - certainly nothing like that of any of the previous "waves".

Come to think of it, I would hope that the, for lack of a better word, politics of an almost-certain AVS group buy for the RS2 would not adversely affect either the likelihood of, or any other aspect (especially price) of, another group buy for the RS1. To be even more specific, if the price of the RS1 in a group buy were another outstanding value, people might buy it rather than fork over the additional dollars, and wait the additional time, for the RS2.:)

Dang . . . I don't know what to get -- RS1 or the new Black Pearl. They should now both be similarly priced.

120" HP screen. 13-18 feet back for seating. Total light control.

I'm stuck. Any significant issue that would point to one over the other?

09-26-07, 05:54 PM
The Sanyo PLV-Z2000 in on my list too. I'll have to reluctantly scratch the RS1 off my list, no matter the price. A maximum of 2,000 hours on low or high mode is just too little. More likely you won't get anywhere near 2,000 hours on the RS1. I need as close to 3,000 hours as possible. Therefore my list is down to two, the Sanyo PLV-Z2000 and the VPL-VW60. So far it looks like the VW60 is winning the battle for which one I'll choose.

Good luck getting a Sanyo bulb to last over 2000 hours. I've had 2 of their projectors in the past and never had a bulb go over 2000 hours. Haven't had a sony but i wouldn't put any meaning into the bulb hours manufacturers state. Its luck of the draw more than anything.

Simple...we are not a .com place. True, we have the largest forum in the world for AV. But, we are a custom installer specializing in front projection real home theaters. We have no desire to be a .com place either, we are more about personal service.

Group buys are usually only when products come out, and that is not every time either due to restrictions by some manufacturers.

Any plans for upcoming group buys and the new line of pj's were recently announced?

i guess all of this group buy talk helps some people, but I don't have a projector and want one.

I keep trying to get availability and prices on RS-1 and vw60, but all I get are answering machines and email addresses. I use both of these and get no responses.

I'm just not going to buy without doing some consumer due diligence, like comparing prices and service, and examining how responsible the seller candidates are.

Anyone have suggestions? Granted, I'm new to this forum, but I find it to be a good source of credible information. I need credible information on this first step into the unknown.

Thanks

Well, in my experience, you can't beat Jason and AVS. I have bought a crap load of stuff (including an RS1) for my new HT in the past 6 months and all of it (except minor stuff like cables) from Jason. Great service and great prices. The first RS1 died after a few hours and they had a new one sent out to me the next day. You know the service is good when situations like that give it the test. As far as due diligence - you have done that just by asking the question on a large forum like this!

What is the contact link for AVS? Do they test the product before shipping? Do they offer calibration? Just wondering.

Link at the top of this forum page for AV Science Store and contacts link at the bottom of that page.

Not sure on the testing and calibration, you will need to ask them on that.

romanesq
09-29-07, 05:49 PM
AVS has done calibration for people in the past for a nominal cost. If that's something you want, you can but a bulb fades a bit and the calibration will not be (as) valid.

Strongly suggest you go with AVS. They eliminate concerns on a product and are very reasonable on price and superior service.

romanesq
09-29-07, 08:44 PM
No idea. You'll have to ask them. They may be able to refer to a calibrator who is more local.

It does to me when you're talking about $350+ a pop. I'll get the Mack 3 year warranty and buy another bulb during the lifetime of the PJ. Original lamp, two from Mack and one I buy, so four total. At 3,000 hours per lamp, that's ~12,000. Say I only get ~1,500 or fewer hours. That's eight lamps now instead of four. So, one out of pocket compared to five out of pocket. That's another $1,400 over the life of the PJ. It's like I'm getting my Stewart 92" Firehawk G3 for FREE.

Or its like .30 cents a movie

Jason Turk

The only reason I'd want a calibration for a PJ is because I'd want a custom gamma that gives an even grayscale across all IRE values. Even as a lamp fades, the gamma will fade at the same ratio, leaving the overall gamma value the same for the lifetime of the lamp?

Does AVS have anyone who can come to my home in the area of Riverside County, which is between LA County and Orange County?

You can fly us out there! :) Seriously, we don't have any direct people out there, but I can check if I have anyone near by.

Cheapest street price for the HD1 (RS1) in the UK is now about $5900. You guys don't know how good you've got it. :)

I'm waiting on a few shootouts between the VW60 & RS1 before I make my final decison on which one to buy. However with a MSRP of $7100 for the VW60 in the UK, my decison shouldn't be made too difficult.
