I am designing and building a dedicated 16' x 24' home theater room. I'm going to pu an 8-10" platform for a row of upper seats. I just bought 2 Hsu Research tubes that come with a dedicated 500 watt amp. They have an exposed 12" speaker at the top and a base port at the bottom. Many or all of you may already be familar with them, but this is my first experience. They are about 12" wide and about 4' high. According to my research, they can be laid on the side or stood up on 3 spike. I heard that if you stand them up, they are so powerful that they tend to "walk" and need to be put in a box or tied to the wall using a strap.
My questions are: 1. will carpeting the home theater ruin the base sound if I stand them up?? I understand that carpeting may absorb some of the sound, but will it substantially downgrade it?? I'm worried that if I use a hard floor surface, it will cause other reflectivity problems. 2. will putting the tubes on the floor on their side be worse sounding then standing them up? Will it cause unintended wall reflections??
My room is a rectangle with the long way being front to back. How can I tell whether theoretically it would be better to put them in the front next to the R/L speakers, on the platform by the back row (to get vibrations to go into the hollow platform and thus to transfer vibrations to the seats) or behind the couch (and then standing behind the couch or on their side)?
Also, I hope this is the right place for these questions. I think there's a home theater design or similar area, but I figured I'd start here since it's specific to subs. Thanks much for your help and advice!
