When I switch stations on my Cox STB (8300 HD DVR), and the new station is a different resolution, I get the digital equivalent of static: Crud flashes on the screen, and then the new station finally appears. The Explorer is connected to a Panny TH-50PH9UK via HDMI. I don't know if this is something in the STB, HDMI having to create a new handshake, or what.

Anyone have any ideas? It's very annoying :-/

When I switch my Sky HD box between a 576i channel and a 1080i channel (I'm in the UK where 576i is our SD channel) the Sky box switches between 576p and 1080i output. There is a brief, occasional, frame or two of "noise" (i.e. "static") before the display - connected by HDMI - blanks whilst it renegotiates resolution etc.

The only way round this would be to configure your box to output a permanent 1080i or 720p resolution, and allow it to cross convert? However if your display has a better de-interlacer/scaler than your set top box this is not a great solution.

In the case of Sky HD the box correctly aspect ratio signals 4:3 and 16:9 SD broadcasts in 576p but not in 1080i - so I stick with the slight interruption on flipping between SD and HD channels. (In the UK we only have 1080i broadcasts so there is no 720p issue currently)

Thanks for the response, I'll try having the STB do the scaling and see how it looks... there is probably a best "channel flipping" configuration and an "optimal quality" configuration. Would be too nice if one setup worked best for everything, huh?
