View Full Version : Indirect Personal Lighting with fiber optics? Has anyone ever done this?

Hi all,

I was in my brother-in-law's car (BMW 535) and it has internal map lights that are mounted in the ceiling which look to be fiber optics. When turned on, they light up the center console area below, but there is no stray light shinning around the rest of the car which is great for eliminating eye strain for the driver at night.

This got me thinking if there could be an application for my HT so I can watch my shows in darkness, while my wife multitasks next to me, using the light from focused fiber optics installed in the ceiling. The intent would be that the fiber optics would be mounted so they would not be visible in the ceiling when turned on, with only a soft ring of light focused on the seat cushion, where a book or magazine would be.

Any thoughts, or experience would be great.

Thanks, Kai

This is a heck of an idea. I was looking for some sort of unobtrusive task lighting for the wife when she is trying to fiddle with the baby.

I wonder what is available.

BMW's use LED's. As you can tell, they are usually very directional.
