So I am starting over a building a new network. Currently, I record TV using a TiVo Series 2. I have a Linux box with tivo server that pulls off shows I want to archive. I use Amazon Unbox to download pay shows/movies and use a web frontend to ********** on the linux box to download vidcasts and such which have to be converted to MPEG2. I also rip the kid DVDs to the right TiVo MPEG2 and put them on the server. I also have Jinzora on the linux box for the music.
Now that I have moved I am looking at buying a HDTV LCD that does 1080p and upgrading components of my network. I want to ditch the TiVo altogether, so that means a capture card in the backend server. I am thinking of doing both NTSC and OTA ATSC and perhaps using LinuxMCE for this backend "core" server.
If I do this, what can I use on the frontend? Yeah, I can use a PC with enough hardware to do HD, but is there anything else I can use? If not, that is fine, I would probably just go the PC route.
Others are telling me that I should just put Vista Premium with a HD capture card on the back and put an XBox 360 on the front and call it done. This would work, but I don't see all the functionality I have in Jinzora when it comes to my music if I go this route and don't even think about telephony integration like LinuxMCE has (something I want to play with). I could always keep the Linux server to mess around with this stuff and build a new server for the video, but that feels like the wrong direction for me.
Any thoughts or suggestions from the crowd?
