Kim Basinger and Jennifer Tilly are HOT. Oh and the guys are good actors, but when I was 14 way back when it came out. Those were my thoughts. I saw it again recently and I am very impressed with how it has held up. The original with Steve McQueen will never be surpassed but this came close to the equal of it. I am buying it. Just waiting for toshiba to return my player or I jump for the xbox drive. :)

A decent remake but pales in comparions to the orginal (IMHO). Have not seen the 1994 version in HD so can not comment on PQ. The Original ver on HD has very good PQ.

I saw this on release day and thought it dreadful. Bears not a hint of the flavor of the Jim Thompson novel, and the ending is dire. If you must buy one, go with the original.

I took a look at quite a bit of this last night on the big screen. It was part nostalgic trip, as I did this movie, and to check out the PQ (mostly the latter). It's kind of an okay romp, too. This was back when Baldwin and Basinger actually liked each other.

PQ is kind of routine for what we are seeing from Universal for catalog titles. Not immensely better than a good anamorphic DVD. Not bad, but can get really grainy in low light areas. This movie was shot Panavision anamorphic with mostly the C-series lenses. We watched film dailies while we were making this, so I know that the original material is of good quality. Unfortunately, whatever elements were used for this transfer are not particulary outstanding.

If you are into filmmaking at all, you might be interested in this bit of trivia. This was camera operator Jim Muro's first A-Camera job. Jimmy was already a reknowned Steadicam operator for Jim Cameron on The Abyss, and Dean Semler on Dances with Wolves, and he was/is IMO the best there has ever been with that device. It is used extensively in The Getaway, and he does a magnificent job with it. Jimmy is becoming a very accomplished director of photography now (Open Range, Crash, Rush Hour 3 and quite a few more). Also..couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Well the review on High-Def Digest gives the PQ a 4 and the SQ a 2.5. These reviewers are confusing. First of all it has a TrueHD track. Good for Universal. As far as I'm concerned that in and of itself deserves a better than 2.5 stars. Secondly, if the sound design may well be as the original as the reviewer suggests then the AQ through TrueHD is representing it as it is. Both Brown and Bracke seem to be falling into the same mode. The latter hitting the latest Halloween for Blu Ray with one of the worst PQ scores on the basis it wasn't faithful to the original and yet the Blu Ray version is clearly the best this movie has ever looked. Because some of the blue cast in the night shots is taken away and that was the director's choice to have that cast the Bu Ray version deserves a pummeling in PQ. Ridiculous.

I think high def reviewers should be splitting their PQ AQ ratings into whether the version they are seeing is close to the original (as poor as the original may be in terms of camera work, film, sound) and PQ and AQ as a simple perception of what is immediately perceived regardless of some "original" axiom. The ratings, particularly on that site are confusing, to say the least.

I have it an am finishing a review which I am posting on my site and TVPredictions.com. It is a fine looking transfer but I think the TrueHD track deserves a better rating than hidef digest gave it. It is anot a great film but Kim Bassinger sure looks great naked in HD!

I'ma pick it up. The unrated sex scene helped me through puberty so this one's a personal favorite.

That, and I thought it was a pretty decent flick. ;)

I just finished watching this and I was very impressed with the picture quality. I'd give PQ at least a solid 4. It was much, much better than the the DVD.

In the opening scenes, there is a closeup shot from the side of someone holding a chrome-plated pistol. You can clearly read every bit of text inscribed on the gun down to the serial number!

I remember this film from when it was in the theater, and the story was even better than I recall.

I purchased the original McQueen version on HD DVD also, but have yet to watch it. Looking forward to it, too.

In the opening shot when Michael Madsen parks his bike, you can see the whole film crew reflected in the shiny headlights. :D
