My issue is that it seems absurd to pay $300 as an acquisition fee and pay $5 a month as a lease fee for a DirectTV HD DVR. I look at ebay and see the HR10 Tivo going for much cheaper than that, and I would own it. Would I run into any problems just buying a Tivo off of ebay and using that?! Or can I buy something at bestbuy? I do not have a home phone line, but I do have a wireless network.
Thanks!

The HR10-250 can not pick up the new sats nor can it uncompress MPEG4 therefore you won't get any of the new HD channels. There is a reason you are seeing the HR10-250's for less, they are going to be basically obsolete shortly.
You need an HR20 if you want the new channels and if the HR20 is the only receiver you have, the $5 a month fee is waived, it's only charged for additional receivers on the account instead of the old mirroring fee they use to charge.
I do believe you can buy an HR20 outright but the cost difference probably isn't worth it.

Many people get very good deals on the HR20, you have to play CSR roulette. I wasn't lucky with that, so bought (leased) an HR20 from an authorized dealer over Ebay for $200 shipped.
I believe the price to purchase one is $700. Thems the way things are, if you don't like them, don't go with D*TV.

I forgot to ask if you are an existing or new customer, as an existing customer do some research here and/or dbstalk and try to call retention and get the price dropped.

Well, I just had it installed today. I just went with the basic (free) receiver, but I want to have two, and the second one to be the HD DVR. I guess i'll pony up the dough...gah.
