View Full Version : BB is stocking up on Blu Ray
I stopped by BB to skim through latest HDM releases. A lady kept blocking my view and I finally had to ask what was going on with all the shuffling. Apparently she was repacking 5 racks to 3 racks as they need to make room to actually expand to 7-10 racks of blu ray SW. She wasn't exact on a date but apparently in November there will be in her words " a big.. no.. a very huge sale " happening. I asked if it was for both HD formats and she said no that she worked for the studios and the sale was to be specifically for blu ray. I should have asked if this sale was across the board to all vendors or if it was a BB exclusive. I had to split as I was running late for a meeting after lunch. I put down the three titles I was ready to buy and will wait for this sale.
So this could be a few things.
1. A fire sale.
2. Blow up the sales numbers for the holidays and the final year tallies.
thebland 09-26-07, 06:18 PM Well, we have always known that Best Buy support Blu Ray..
They will soon have more HD DVD also. Much of what is now being put on shelves was decided on before Paramount and Dreamworks. And sales data for the movies sales is now much closer, also.
Well, we have always known that Best Buy support Blu Ray.. Or is it that HD DVD has only 16 titles in the 4th quarter? If so, not much space needed..
BB supports both, so your point is?
How many more of these "I went to best buy" threads do we need by everyone?
JosephShaw 09-26-07, 06:22 PM Why would a studio person be consolidating shelf space over a month before a supposed stock up and sale? That's a floor associate's job, and retailers hate having empty shelves. Of course, they could be filling it up with Q4 releases, but there are better ways to do that and maintain your product facing.
thebland 09-26-07, 06:24 PM I think these threads are rather humorous.
sunspot 09-26-07, 06:29 PM I was in my local BB yesterday and they had expanded shelf space for both HD and BD. The space that formerly contained both formats was now HD only and BD had it's own new space. I'm just happy they are expanding any shelf space and not shrinking.
DrCrawn 09-26-07, 06:33 PM Sounds like more Sony *please buy our shiny blue discs* sales.
Why anyone would pay Worst Buy prices is beyond me. What an awful store to have as your main B&M supporter.
Was at mine today checking out camcorders, the HD and BR racks have both been steadily beefed up in recents weeks, as of today, each format had two very well and equally stocked sections, and actually, Knocked Up on HD DVD had a major portion on one side of the seperate rack\display that's sitting freely over by the player endcaps - it was nearly picked clean, only 2 copies left (for HD DVD).
oregoncalfroper 09-26-07, 06:54 PM They will soon have more HD DVD also. Much of what is now being put on shelves was decided on before Paramount and Dreamworks. And sales data for the movies sales is now much closer, also.
You base this on what fact from what BB store? I'm sure because of all the Paramount news being as they are the biggest movie library around.... wait never mind ..... that heads are just rolling over all the momentum from it and BB feels they have to quadruple they're HD DVD selection so that you can continue to buy them from amazon. Maybe more people buy Blu RAy at BB than HD DVD... Did you ever think of that... And sales data is NOT much closer another fud post by you! In fact is is about the same as before the announcement, Yeah yeah I know everyone buying up all the old paramount movies and that skews the numbers and when they all gone hd dvd will take the lead... Is there any way I can just block this guys post so I see everyone else's post in a thread but not his?
Derek
I'm really beginning to think the "A" in AVS Forum stands for "anecdotal"

Ignore feature. But my advice is to not respond to some posts, I know it has lowered my blood pressure.
Steverhcp02 09-26-07, 07:21 PM my best buy said the earth is flat and the alien race that created us will announce it sometime in November.....and they have chosen the Fonz as their spokesperson.

lol. I put this same guy in my ignore list a few months ago.
Just click on his name and view his profile. There you'll see an ignore option.

I'm really beginning to think the "A" in AVS Forum stands for "anecdotal"and "V" for virtual :p
oscar_in_fw 09-26-07, 07:40 PM Well since rumors are flying rampant, I'll provide another data point: My local Best Buy had both Blu-Ray and HD DVD sections crammed full of titles; they are going to have to expand those racks before they can put next weeks releases on the racks (either that or sell a ton of discs). I don't know about the HD DVD side, but there are going to be a ton of Blu-ray releases over the next few weeks so I won't be surprised at a signficant physical expansion for either format in near future at this particular store.

OHHHHHHHH...TERROR! TERROR! TERROR!
Is there anyway I can block this guys post.:p
Prehapps the hight prices are just getting to them Id guess both sides have large OverStocks in BBs as their prices are almost always bad. So maybe just a get rid of extra OS.
Or prehapps a attempt to improve overall sales with the holidays comming get new folks hooked then jack the prices back up
anotheraviator 09-26-07, 07:51 PM My BBs (three locations) have expanded both to give them an entire isle. Even showing on both formats.
Michael Mullis 09-26-07, 07:51 PM Hey, I noticed my BB also carries a REALLY large selection of DVD.
Best Buy is definately leaning towards DVD.
My BBs (three locations) have expanded both to give them an entire isle. Even showing on both formats.
Interesting. Where are you? Does BB have area managers that can decide this?

Haven't a clue. I live in the Toronto area and frequent about 3 Best Buy's and 2 Future Shops. Both are 100% even across the board. One has expanded their HD-DVD section.
All the stores also now put the high-def version right beside the SD-DVD version in the "New Release" sections. i.e. Today I saw about 20 copies of Knocked Up in HD-DVD right beside the SD-DVDs.
Based on BestBuy's allocation of self space, the PS3 would be selling as well as the Wii, and Blades of Glory would be the Oscar winner for Best Picture.
phansson 09-26-07, 09:31 PM My local best buy just increased the display area of both Blu Ray and hd dvd to two 8 foot sections each. Last week they had one 8 foot section for each.
So it was the same for both formats at my Best Buy.

I see the generals over at propaganda HD sent you over to provide some spin on any reports of good news for the blu team.
On subject, my local BB have provided equal amounts of HDM for both formats for over 6+ months or more.
Nothing has changed. Frys by far though has the largest selection and best prices.

BoG is out of favor this week at Best Buy.
This week Knocked Up is up for HD DVD disc of the week and best film of all time.
Michael Mullis 09-26-07, 09:59 PM By the way:
I asked if it was for both HD formats and she said no that she worked for the studios and the sale was to be specifically for blu ray.
"The Studios"? I wonder what movies they've released this year.
Oh yeah, I saw a trailer for it. I think it was called "The Movie".
I heard it wasn't that great though. Then again, I can't stand "The Actress". She can't act for crap.
JTYoung 09-26-07, 10:22 PM I plan to buy several BDs and HD DVDs between now and the end of the year, most of those however will not be at Best Buy, not when I can purchase them significantly cheaper online.
AFAIK, Best Buy does not have people come in and do the stocking and setting of displays for them. They are not a grocery store where the Coke, Pepsi, Beer, Bread, etc... vendors come in every morning and deliver product and stock the shelves initally.
eizenga13 09-26-07, 10:24 PM Well, we have always known that Best Buy support Blu Ray..
actually BB is format neutral, and at my store we stock MUCH more HD DVD.
GizmoDVD 09-26-07, 11:12 PM My Best Buy just got in 12 cases of TotalHD movies.
waporvare 09-26-07, 11:24 PM Equal shelf space for both at my local BB.

Hey I agree with what your saying. I thought her Studio Person reply was odd. I do know that she was not an employee of BB. We'll see if this actually pans out.
wormraper 09-27-07, 12:32 AM My BBs (three locations) have expanded both to give them an entire isle. Even showing on both formats.
ditto.
lockheede 09-27-07, 12:47 AM I have run into vendors there before. I was looking for help and asked them and they said they didn't work for Best Buy.
Come to think of it, last week I was puttering around BB and noticed a girl moving films around (not in the HD section that I had noticed) that wasn't wearing the blue shirt. I figured she was a trainee, but maybe she was a vendor.
UxiSXRD 09-27-07, 01:17 AM My local Best Buy pulled all the actual discs and have these stupid cases with paper in them. I've stopped going there entirely, even to browse or price match.
Hey, I noticed my BB also carries a REALLY large selection of DVD.
Best Buy is definately leaning towards DVD.
We better write a petition and complain about this! I am shocked! :D
JosephShaw 09-27-07, 06:50 AM Hey I agree with what your saying. I thought her Studio Person reply was odd. I do know that she was not an employee of BB. We'll see if this actually pans out.
You probably missed her being asked to leave shortly afterwards then. :D
Equal shelf space for both at my local BB.
Same here... they just doubled both...
BuckNaked 09-27-07, 07:04 AM I don't know about you guys, but every time I'm in Best Buy, I'm the only one browsing the HD aisle. Tons of people in the DVD sections, but never another soul perusing HDM.
As for me, I'm just browsing to get ideas for what to buy from Amazon at half the price.
Poolrad 09-27-07, 07:24 AM My local BB has been expanding shelf space for both formats (about equally), they've also been much more competitive on pricing for certain titles. Once my Amazon 10% is up it may be worthwhile for me to starting shopping there for some of the lower priced titles.
Everdog 09-27-07, 07:27 AM Hey Mods, why is this not in the BR software forum?

my BB has got to hate me. I peruse Cheapassgamer and come in only for the loss leader items (and I'm very good about not being tempted with full price merchandise) or I print off the HD DVD prices from target.com and have them price match (Target's online store uses amazon as their source thus making them equal)

Ditto. It's like I have the whole aisle just for me! :D
P.S. I saw a Wal-Mart store that didn't have either HD-DVD or BR, so both formats are being withdrawn (just thought I'd throw in another single idiotic anecdotal data point and draw an industry-wide conclusion from it.).
thebland 09-27-07, 07:45 AM Ditto....I have rarely seen anyone else buying HD media of either format at BB when I am shopping there.
markrubin 09-27-07, 07:50 AM Thank you
